I always thought that Louis being a slaveowner related to what he himself called his greatest flaw. For most of the book, he is someone who is willing to sit back and either let other people do evil, or reap the benefits of others' suffering. What better way to represent that than Louis living off the forced labor of the enslaved people he inherited control of? It shows what Louis learns later, that inactivity or ignorance can cause just as many problems as being actively malicious.

I met her in 1997 on the New Orleans Anne Rice, tour. She didn’t normally interact with the tour, according to the guide….but we were high school students on a literary themed field trip and she just felt like meeting with some of her younger fans that were students. She spent about an hour talking to us and signed some books that day, took questions and told us about her life. I remember her answering a few questions about who her favorite characters were in her stories and her personal favorite books etc.,. Her fascination and attraction with vampires wasn’t their immortality or beauty….but rather that her idea of a perfect romance was a genuine love that lasts forever and isn’t influenced by mere lust, but is actually driven 100% by true love. Vampires lack the biological sex drive and lust of normal men, so when a vampire wanted or loved a person (and didn’t kill them) it wasn’t to satisfy his sexual desires or lust but rather because the vampire fell in love with the persons soul rather than lusting over their body. A vampire that loves someone must overcome their base desire for their blood (an allegory for using someone for their body and physical desires) also unlike a Mortal man, a vampire actually has the potential to love the person for eternity if the vampire turns their love into another vampire. At that time her favorite book was “Cry to Heaven”, and the character of hers that she was in love with was originality Louis, but halfway through “The vampire Lestat” she fell in love with Lestat and from that point on she retconned his personality in future works away from the monster he was in “Interview”, and the character most like herself was Rowan Mayfair. And speaking of the Mayfair witches, that’s the other Anne rice series we are supposed to get in 2022.

I was not aware of these casting calls; as soon as you said brothel owner, I knew the production team was looking for an excuse to add bewbs. This makes me sad. I would have no problem with more diversity in an adaptation of The Vampire Chronicles. That said, it does not sound like we are getting an adaptation of any of the stories from The Vampire Chronicles. These descriptions scream of a network wanting to capitalize on an exisiting property when they have no appreciation for what its fans love about it, or a desire to bring that to the screen.
The time period and locations of The Interview With The Vampire leaves a decent amount of room for more representation in the cast while still keeping the main story the same. Louis could be a favoured illegitimate child of a plantation owner, or Claudia could have been Creole making their family all the more "other" for the time period. It would have been different, but it still would have been the setting/story we know and appreciate.
Bringing us into the 20th century alone tells me we are not getting the same story and at best, we'll get characters with familiar names and the occasional glimpse of what could have been had the show actually been an adaptation of any of Anne Rice's works. The Jonathan Rhys Meyers Dracula comes to mind. The only things about that show that had anything in common with the source material were character names and vampires. That series was cancelled after one disappointing season that ended in a cliffhanger.

Very much agreed. I think there are lots of ways they could have added diversity without changing the story itself so much. Jacob Anderson is an excellent actor and I was cautiously optimistic about how they'd rewrite the character to fit his casting. I think something like what you suggested, him being the illegitimate son of a plantation owner, would have made perfect sense. "20th century brothel owner" on the other hand is just completely divorced from Louis' canon character.

      @sumrakdievca Před 3 lety +16

Definitely agree with you on Louis and Claudia being solid candidates for race-changing in the original source material. I've done academic research on Louisiana Creole and one of the big things you run into is that there weren't exactly tons of white women in French Louisiana for a LONG time. So, it really wasn't that uncommon for a landowner to take up with a black woman (preferably a free woman of color, but slave women happened, too), have an entire nuclear family with her, then leave the family with a parting gift of land and resources when he or his relatives had managed to source a white wife for him. Frequently, the creole children were acknowledged AND were left inheritances by their fathers. There were even a couple cases where the Creole children wound up being the sole heirs, so Louis' situation wouldn't be totally out of the question. Similarly, Claudia being a Creole child in New Orleans where there was a flourishing Creole class for DECADES would be an obvious option. It's SERIOUSLY frustrating that they decided to take the, as Maven put it, AU fanfiction route so that they could add sex and gore because they think that's what sells. (I will also admit that as a linguist who specializes in Louisana and Mississippi dialects of French, I am salty that the time period and location pretty much puts an end to my dream of getting ANY sort of main stream use of Louisiana Creole. I mean, sure, I never thought it would go further than a phrase or two sprinkled in for flavor, but I CAN DREAM, damn it!)

I see some people say that race or gender changing characters isn’t a big deal but it is. Because society and individuals reactions to a person can greatly depend on their race and gender. If a character called Louis the N word is the original it would make no sense. In this one it would have a different meaning, and a different reaction. It changes everything.

My two favorite adaptations of a big franchise is Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, and seeing some of the behind the scenes of those, it's only when you had big advocates for source material that you get a good adaptation. It's one of the reasons why we're getting good comic book movies these days. The people behind the camera are fans, and so they have respect for what they are adapting. You need fans in these roles, not random Hollywood people who go 'HEY, WHAT IF WE DID THIS!" while sitting in the writing room.

So, I saw the movie interview with a vampire and thought it was great. I tried to read the books back then but I got sidetracked. They were very very gay. Now I’m pushing 60 I’m an African-American guy who decided to read the books during lockdown. I read the first four. And because like everybody else I’m constantly sitting in front of a screen I decided to get a synopsis of some of the other books and I came upon your channel about a month or two ago. I think this is a terrible idea. The reason why the marvel comics translated so well into the Disney films is because they didn’t really change the personalities of the characters. They did race swap Nick fury who was a white World War II vet in the comics but his personality was exactly the same. The actor who was on Game of Thrones playing the character gray worm certainly is good looking enough and professional enough to play the character. However it’s changing too much from the book. I’m afraid we’re going to get another queen of the damned and this will be the final nail in the coffin on any of the vampire Chronicles making it to film ever again. The problem with Hollywood types is they think they’re smarter and more creative than the writers. Whatever dynamic that Louis and Lestat have with one another is going to be extremely different because of the change of race and the change of time. This has nothing to do with racism it has to do with the arrogance of Hollywood thinking that they could tell a better story than Anne Rice. A black pimp?! Who decided that would be a good idea? The fans are not racist for wanting Louis to remain the same as he is in the books. I’m offended that Hollywood decided to race swap a great character and replace him with a 1970s Blackplotaion stereotype?

Can I just say it always makes me happy to see how diverse the Vampire Chronicles readership is. The books really do appeal to people of all ages and backgrounds, so why wouldn’t a faithful adaptation be just as appealing?
That being said, I really liked the idea that if anyone were to be race swapped it could have been Daniel and I don’t think anyone would have had a problem with that. Also, as the series progresses and we meet more of the characters there already is a lot of built-in diversity. Like, A LOT more than you find in most franchises.
My theory is that the producers felt a need to make one of the lead characters non-white - completely ignoring the fact that Louis is not really a lead throughout the whole series, as he plays a very small role in most of the books except for the first two.

Hmm, I don't mind changing the race or color, or even gender of the characters, vampires kinda transcend these labels, though I understand how fans would get annoyed by changes to their favorite characters.
My concern is that they might change too much, to the point it's not really the same story with the same characters - which would be fine, but they market it as an "adaptation" of the basic story, which again might put off the fans who expect a relatively "faithful" adaptation.
At that point, why not make an entirely new show?
If they want the publicity of the Anne Rice name, they can just use the same setting, just with new story and characters.
I'm also concerned that they will make a bad show, and then blame the poor ratings on the viewers being bigoted.
"Nooo, it's not that our show/movie is bad, it's the viewers who are racist/sexist/homophobic etc.".

Well, there's some confusion in the novels. It's been a while since I reread them, but if I remember correctly, Anne Rice does describe Louis as "creole." Which would make Jacob Anderson a great choice. But she also describes Louis as white. And she does this with other characters, too. I think we might have to accept the fact that despite being a Louisiana native, Anne Rice might not know what "creole" means. She often uses the term correctly, referring to people of mixed French/Native American/African/Hispanic heritage. But sometimes, she seems to use the word to refer to anyone of French descent ( NOT what "Creole" means).
The only problem I could see is how they explain a dark skinned Creole man being an antebellum plantation owner. Other than that, given the ambiguity of the source material, I say go for it. Jacob Anderson is a good actor, and he definitely looks like he could pass for Creole.
EDIT: Just got further into the video. It turns out Louis might not be a plantation owner from 1791, but a brothel owner from 1910? That's...odd. Maybe they felt like they didn't want to "deal with" slavery as an issue. Which is pretty cowardly. Serious drama isn't afraid of dark issues. Which makes me worry this will be entertainment, rather than serious drama.

@@Revelwoodie I guess that Louis could have been the son of a white - or perhaps even mixed - plantation owner with a free woman of mixed heritage, which was certainly a historic possibility.
      That said, from wikipedia:
"The term Créole was originally used by French settlers to distinguish people born in Louisiana from those born elsewhere, thus drawing a distinction between Europeans (such as the French and Spanish) and Africans born in the Old World from their Creole descendants native to the New World. The word is not a racial label, and people of fully European descent, fully African descent, or of any mixture therein (including Native American admixture) may be Creole.
People of any race can and have identified as Creoles, and it is a misconception that créolité-the quality of being Creole-implies mixed racial origins."
So she appears to be using "creole" correctly - perhaps not in its present meaning, but in the one it would have had back in the day.

If any character would be made mixed race, I thought it would be Claudia. It would make sense that instead of a young, white girl she would be a young black/mixed race girl. “Oncle” Verven could just be a title, not necessarily his uncle but an uncle to all. I completely agree that one of the Vampire Chronicles biggest flaws is the lack of black people especially considering the time and place. But, again, they could add diversity in the show in other ways, Claudia could be a black little girl and nothing would change in the story.

I hope that it could be made, just as I hoped the sequel that was set up in the movie "Interview with the Vampire" would come to pass. Clearly the final scene in the convertible set up a sequel. Rumors suggested that the studio and actors didn't want anything to do with it after she tried to sabotage the production. Multiple studios have had rights, it's an incredibly popular book series with a built in fandom, and it never gets made? The common theme is that Anne is a talented but controlling pain in the ass who can't share creative control. I hope it will be made, but the best possible creative people who could have been involved have repeatedly bailed. Making Louis a mixed race plantation owner......and then watching hordes of racists fall in love with him for the 'black people owned slaves too. That means slavery wasn't bad.' The show wouldn't have survived a single season.
Plantations were very similar to concentration camps. 'Problematic' doesn't even begin to cover OG Louis. As he a vampire, he's actually much less evil. The story doesn't really work anymore. The book should've been a series of Lestat 'mentioning' all the heinous shit Louis did to shut him up. "Oh, you hate me because I just ate someone? How about when you were torturing human beings on a daily basis, hmm?' The vampires later discovery that they can just kill evil or depressed people makes him look like an even bigger jackass.
But as a pimp, that's something Louis can more easily delude himself to. He wasn't a bad guy, right? Sure, he treated otherwise impoverished women like property. But he was just a black man trying to make his way in life. Heck, he was a job creator!

What was worst, the thing she took out most was world building. I got complaints that my book was very bland and hard to follow, but when whole paragraphs describing an environment are taken out, it leads to those problems. Worst experience of my life.

They should have stuck with the Wolf Killer idea. I agree with the commenter who said this comes across as an original series rather than what this is. It's fine to race bend Louis depending on HOW they do it, but I don't think it will be done in a respectful matter. Considering also how Lestat is supposed to be more sinister - which isn't how Lestat is. - but he is horrible in the first book like you said. Then there are the rumors you're talking about Claudia and how they are changing how queerness is representative.

And especially with her fascination with Louis and her sleeping with him (in his coffin I know there is no sex) in her undies. Indeed, Lestat was turned by Magnus in October (or possibly early November) of 1779 and NOT early 1780 like some official publications and fans insist it is. But if you're going to limit your actor pool to ONLY actors who have naturally green eyes, you're going to need a LOT of luck to find the perfect actor to embody the character. I think the acting talent is a whole lot more important than eye color. Contacts exist. They ended up casting an actor with brown eyes, anyway.
Also, Anne Rice kind of has a thing about frequently giving her POC characters green eyes.

  • @stephanieking4444
    @stephanieking4444 Před 3 lety +4

So....they're changing every character's ethnicity, family background, and personality. They're changing the historical context. Why continue calling this 'Interview with the Vampire' or 'The Vamp Chronicles'? Why keep the characters's names? They've changed everything else.
Ah...but.....in a civilisation that experiences regressive decadence, attachment to surface authenticity (names, series title) matters much more than the very nature of the project that's being adapted. In decadent times, depth can be modified beyond recognition, so long as the surface remains the same.
I'm not interested in this series. Not because Louis is played by a BME actor. But because it's a lie. True to a thin surface, not to the all important substance. I have always been at odds with my times, surface doesn't matter to me, substance is everything. So, to paraphrase Louis in the 1994 IWTV movie...''I must most respectfully decline''.
If they want to make a show about a BME guy running 'Games of Brothels', then why not come up with a completely original story? Trying to bait the fandom? No....probably just trying to create controversy. In decadent times, angry debate is where it's at. Negative, heated conversations bout details create publicity. 95% of Facebook runs on it.

  • @uglygiantbagsofmostlywater

I think a lot of these changes have to do with greed. If a writer/producer changes anything to the IP they can claim rights to that part of the story. These people don't care about the original material, they just want to use the brand recognition and then 'make it their own' so they can get all the benefits. Why else would they go through all that trouble to change parts of a story that was perfectly fine to begin with.

I know this is the least important change someone would have a problem with, but, about making the vampire characters older makes sense for a multiple seasons show. If they cast teenagers, their aging would be more noticed and vampires shouldn't age. That being said, I don't care about the changes as long as the show is good. Talk about a negative stereotype for a black man to be in the hooker trade. By the time this show actually hits the network, it's going to be "Interview with the Vampire" in name only. @jaredgenova2228 Před 2 lety +2

As the potential premise of the new series was flushed out over the course of this video/expose, I was drawing the same questions as our wonderful host. In all things, I would hope that screenwriters and producers would think: "Will this plot/cannon-shift ultimately ADD to the story?" when making structural changes. With Louis being shifted to a Creole POC, I immediately agreed with the decision. Shifting his character and perspectives to those of someone who would have had vastly different experiences in New Orleans and surrounding southern Louisiana would have been such a wonderful take. Especially, as the Maven also pointed out, that with such richness in storytelling of the last 250ish years of southern Louisiana under her belt, Anne Rice didn't use it as an opportunity in the Vampire Chronicles to include black and POC folks' experiences in history in these novels. (The Feast of all Saints and Merrick/Blackwood Farm/Blood Canticle all did, though to varying degrees).
Where I began to become a bit skeptical, and as the Maven points out here, why did they feel the need to shift his narrative from the late 18th century to the early 20th? Knowing full well some, though not as many, Creole POC could and did own property and even slaves before the Civil War, the writers absolutely could have enriched the original storytelling by telling a lesser known element of Louisiana's history; all while maintaining the lush atmosphere and scenery of the 18th century. I also agree, that the shift to the brothel setting also could be a gratuitous ploy to introduce a whole lot of hetero sex into the story to balance out the queerness.
Either way, I think that this still could be a very wonderful television series. If you miss the original Interview with the Vampire story so much, luckily there is a novel, feature film, and graphic novel! I mean this in the sense that should you not be taken with these structural changes, you have other media you can choose to consume. I'll remain optimistic about this series. And, of course, I will be watching as it (hopefully 🤞) airs.
