Beware that You Tube has rules about using a backup channel to circumvent strikes against a channel. Another channel I subscribe got caught by this and got strikes against the back up channel as well.
Circumventing bans and strikes by creating a second channel is against the rules as well. Also, "sorry I broke the rules" can be taken as a statement of admission. There's no reason to make a whole new channel and a video. You used video from something he made, and you made money. You kinda need to expect that. Moneeyyyy
If it is published in a journal, the journal holds the copyright. Normally you are supposed to ask permission before reproducing a figure from one though.

From what we know about Egyptian archeology, every dig is done by permit, and the results are embargoed until the local officals announce it. It sounds like this Japanese guy did not follow the rules, so his permit was in potential jeopardy. Irrespective, if you reproduce someone else's stuff, you are supposed to ask permission first and give credit, particularly in a commercial setting (which CZcams definitely is). That is standard practice in science. The "its fair use and FU" attitude is seriously frowned on. Also, in Japan there is no such thing as fair use at all - there copyright is copyright, no ifs, ands or buts.

This strike is harassment. When this happens, apply a counterstrike against him, then he has 10 days to launch a lawsuit under the DCMA system. When he fails to do that, the strike comes off.
I like CZcams. It’s obviously been good to me, there is a great community of people supporting me in the comments, and they’ve always been fair to me… I could have contested this, but I didn’t want the hassle, as my time is better spent learning and spreading information to people.

My experience with Japanese people over email is that many of them are terribly poor at handling foreign language communication and prefer just to shy away from it instead of replying.
Yes it could also have a Japanese connection due to cultural differences. They are Fanatical about copyright infringement. If any Japanese media or other official entities are among his financial backers they will not hesitate to lash out harshly if they perceive the slightest infringement. As a fan of Grand Sumo, recently many Western channels and analysts were summarily banned and shut down off this platform. Over a dozen channels, 1000's of videos and decades of work got flushed away

" Native Egyptologists ( Egyptian) HATE when foreigners discover something & take the credit for it. Research papers are not automatically protected by copyright, but they can be if you choose to include a notice of copyright at the top of the first page of your paper. And only if you are the sole author of the paper in question. As you can see very clearly, that paper has many authors and it is labeled as Open Access, meaning there is no copyright on it.

I come to your channel to learn about the rich heritage of the ancient builders but today I also learned something about the gatekeeping of that knowledge. I really hope the parties concerned will soon see the good faith under which you operate and remove an unnecessary strike.
Thank you. One look at Yoshimura indicates two possible reasons the strike was done. He's known as a piece of work, and at this stage may be influenced by other things than his own good judgment. You're invaluable, as archaeologists continue to treat discoveries in the old Carter way, with splash and publicity and then a decades-long suppression of uncooked data and a greedy sense that somehow publicly funded research remains personal property, no matter what the non-Egyptian nation involved.
Mr. Zawi Hawass seems not to acknowledge any discovery that dates to before 5000 B.C., because it does not fit into the timeframe that he has invented for all of Egyptian archaeology. By acknowledging anything older he would be forced to admit that his teachings for the last 50 years have been in error.
It is a shame for your video to get a strike like that and people who did it do not engage in any conversation with you about this matter. You do a great work on your channel!

I'm sorry to hear that. This is my favorite channel, so I hate your work being attacked this way. The way that Google and CZcams discriminate shows them as on the wrong side of history and civility. They allow, and even amplify as well as platform frauds, grifters and pseudo-archaeologists. Yet, hard-working truth tellers like yourself get punished on flimsy charges. I guess they don't care about their own reputation as long as they are making money. I suppose you'll have to be even more careful going forward, possibly even joining the union that some content providers have organized.

Fair use quite clearly applies and your appeal of the strike will be successful if you file it correctly. There are some great videos about how to do so.

King Khufu has not been found in the western cemetery.” If the find is not Khufu or someone else of a very high stature, then why have the powers that be gone out of their way to silence you and cause you financial harm?
That seems to be consistent with how they handled other researchers' works in recent years, trying to control and make break the news for themselves. Also, if I'm not wrong, Yoshimura posted in Japanese originally. The fact Matt translated what would have gone unnoticed on Japanese online platforms probably triggered them.

Copyright strikes really are unnerving and a shock to the system. It has happened to my channel once as well. I had my contact info listed on my channel but a German media company never asked me to pull the video. Instead they simply alerted Google of copyright infringement, bypassing the simple courtesy of a direct pull down request which I certainly would have done. As in your case I contacted the German media company several times in German and in English. They never once acknowledged any of my emails. Many insensitive people with no scruples exist out there and they love to screw with video channel creators working hard to present quality material. I was making no monies on the video. I simple remastered a 50-year-old broadcast with very poor video imagery and also remastered the audio for my CZcams fans. I had already purchased the DVD decades ago. Oh well, crap happens. But thank you for forging ahead to get the word out!

Speaking as someone who's really slowly learning Japanese, there are some really difficult to understand cultural taboos about addressing any issue too directly when any kind of hurt feelings or bruised honour may be involved, no matter how mildly or indirectly. Possibly if your emails to him went up a chain of command then the situation was exacerbated. I think you did the right thing in utilising an artist's impression by yourself. Well too bad. If you are entering the global ring, you have to accept that other people are going to have different customs, beliefs, etc. CZcams isn't Japan. I like Japanese people and have spent plenty of time in Japan, this guy is not indicative of the typical Japanese person. He would be an insufferable prick to other Japanese people, too.

I believe that in Japan there is no "Fair Use". So this might be it as well. Sucks that this happened. I think what others have said is right Yoshimura should be happy you are basically promoting their work. All the scientists have forgotten mental investigation; they cannot think outside of their box, which is mostly, look at me; I have the answers; rely on my mastery of a subject; you don't need to go anywhere else; forget what some quasi-academic has to say. The Mayan writing system was decoded by a graduate student; his teachers tried to take away his accomplishment; gratefully, he was acknowledged for his ability. How did he do it? He was not wrapped up like a mummy mentally and could allow his mind free range to see on many levels until the code was clear and obvious. You go, guy! The manufacturers of the chair should sue the good Dr. for using their product to "gain." He doesn't have enough strength to stand like a professor and discuss his theories? There's a lot of Japanese archaeology that needs to be done: why isn't he also doing Japanese work? Why is he allowed to go to Egypt (Oh, yes, he agrees with Hawass, that's why) when others are told not to come and have travel bans on them? Science should not be afraid to be wrong or be challenged. When science becomes dogmatic, we are in trouble.

The early release probably went under the radar initially because it was in Japanese and had basically no traction in media. The moment Matt translated and released it, it was now public. It probably explain why Yoshimura then deleted his own contents. And honestly, knowing how Japanese people like to stir up things in society, I wouldn't be surprised he/his team has decided to keep silent to not worsen his relation with the Egyptian "Gods". ;-)
Thanks for the explanation of the strike. It's all rather interesting that such dramatic measures were taken for something so seemingly benign. The story is interesting to Egyptophiles, but I highly doubt that thousands of international reporters will be calling the antiquities police for the scoup. Fascinating discoveries are frequently made, but this one promises to be a bit more, based on the premise behind the strike. Frankly, Egyptian tourism took some pretty serious hits with the Arab Spring and then the pandemic. Any positive news stories can only help their cause. @@AncientArchitects That's the sad part. They make strike blindly then do not try to sort it out later when the other party acts in good faith. That said, could it be language barrier. My experience with Japanese people over email is that many of them are terribly poor at handling foreign language communication and prefer just to shy away from it instead of replying.
Yes it could also have a Japanese connection due to cultural differences. They are Fanatical about copyright infringement. If any Japanese media or other official entities are among his financial backers they will not hesitate to lash out harshly if they perceive the slightest infringement.
As a fan of Grand Sumo, recently many Western channels and analysts were summarily banned and shut down off this platform. Over a dozen channels, 1000's of videos and decades of work got flushed away

@@edser_b Money, archaeology is a major part of the Egyptian economy. They are happy to have foreign money pour into the country, they just don't want them to actually succeed.
The Government will ban the info and wait 10 years to "make the same discovery themselves" after having the real discoverer disgraced and ran out of town. Egypt has been playing this game since the 70's at least.
Taking the money from the digging permit and then hate it when something real gets discovered :)

Research papers are not automatically protected by copyright, but they can be if you choose to include a notice of copyright at the top of the first page of your paper. And only if you are the sole author of the paper in question. As you can see very clearly, that paper has many authors and it is labeled as Open Access, meaning there is no copyright on it.

Thank you. One look at Yoshimura indicates two possible reasons the strike was done. He's known as a piece of work, and at this stage may be influenced by other things than his own good judgment.
You're invaluable, as archaeologists continue to treat discoveries in the old Carter way, with splash and publicity and then a decades-long suppression of uncooked data and a greedy sense that somehow publicly funded research remains personal property, no matter what the non-Egyptian nation involved.
I wonder if Hawass is behind this.

Mr. Zawi Hawass seems not to acknowledge any discovery that dates to before 5000 B.C., because it does not fit into the timeframe that he has invented for all of Egyptian archaeology. By acknowledging anything older he would be forced to admit that his teachings for the last 50 years have been in error.
It is a shame for your video to get a strike like that and people who did it do not engage in any conversation with you about this matter. You do a great work on your channel!

I'm sorry to hear that. This is my favorite channel, so I hate your work being attacked this way. The way that Google and CZcams discriminate shows them as on the wrong side of history and civility. They allow, and even amplify as well as platform frauds, grifters and pseudo-archaeologists. Yet, hard-working truth tellers like yourself get punished on flimsy charges. I guess they don't care about their own reputation as long as they are making money. I suppose you'll have to be even more careful going forward, possibly even joining the union that some content providers have organized.

Fair use quite clearly applies and your appeal of the strike will be successful if you file it correctly. There are some great videos about how to do so.

That seems to be consistent with how they handled other researchers' works in recent years, trying to control and make break the news for themselves. Also, if I'm not wrong, Yoshimura posted in Japanese originally. The fact Matt translated what would have gone unnoticed on Japanese online platforms probably triggered them.

Copyright strikes really are unnerving and a shock to the system. It has happened to my channel once as well. I had my contact info listed on my channel but a German media company never asked me to pull the video. Instead they simply alerted Google of copyright infringement, bypassing the simple courtesy of a direct pull down request which I certainly would have done. As in your case I contacted the German media company several times in German and in English. They never once acknowledged any of my emails. Many insensitive people with no scruples exist out there and they love to screw with video channel creators working hard to present quality material. I was making no monies on the video. I simple remastered a 50-year-old broadcast with very poor video imagery and also remastered the audio for my CZcams fans. I had already purchased the DVD decades ago. Oh well, crap happens. But thank you for forging ahead to get the word out!

Hi Ancient. I'm sorry to hear about all this. Speaking as someone who's really slowly learning Japanese, there are some really difficult to understand cultural taboos about addressing any issue too directly when any kind of hurt feelings or bruised honour may be involved, no matter how mildly or indirectly. Possibly if your emails to him went up a chain of command then the situation was exacerbated. I think you did the right thing in utilising an artist's impression by yourself. What a great artist you are.

Well too bad. If you are entering the global ring, you have to accept that other people are going to have different customs, beliefs, etc. CZcams isn't Japan. I like Japanese people and have spent plenty of time in Japan, this guy is not indicative of the typical Japanese person. He would be an insufferable prick to other Japanese people, too.

I believe that in Japan there is no "Fair Use". So this might be it as well. Sucks that this happened. I think what others have said is right Yoshimura should be happy you are basically promoting their work. You always have given credit to the authors of papers and other documentation. thank you for all you do. All the scientists have forgotten mental investigation; they cannot think outside of their box, which is mostly, look at me; I have the answers; rely on my mastery of a subject; you don't need to go anywhere else; forget what some quasi-academic has to say. The Mayan writing system was decoded by a graduate student; his teachers tried to take away his accomplishment; gratefully, he was acknowledged for his ability. How did he do it? He was not wrapped up like a mummy mentally and could allow his mind free range to see on many levels until the code was clear and obvious. You go, guy! The manufacturers of the chair should sue the good Dr. for using their product to "gain." He doesn't have enough strength to stand like a professor and discuss his theories? There's a lot of Japanese archaeology that needs to be done: why isn't he also doing Japanese work? Why is he allowed to go to Egypt (Oh, yes, he agrees with Hawass, that's why) when others are told not to come and have travel bans on them? Science should not be afraid to be wrong or be challenged. When science becomes dogmatic, we are in trouble.

It's obvious to me that the Egyptian Authority's are behind this due to Dr. Sakuji Yoshimura " Early " release of the find without their Love . The early release probably went under the radar initially because it was in Japanese and had basically no traction in media. The moment Matt translated and released it, it was now public. It probably explain why Yoshimura then deleted his own contents. And honestly, knowing how Japanese people like to stir up things in society, I wouldn't be surprised he/his team has decided to keep silent to not worsen his relation with the Egyptian "Gods". ;-)
Thanks for the explanation of the strike. It's all rather interesting that such dramatic measures were taken for something so seemingly benign. The story is interesting to Egyptophiles, but I highly doubt that thousands of international reporters will be calling the antiquities police for the scoup.
Fascinating discoveries are frequently made, but this one promises to be a bit more, based on the premise behind the strike.
Frankly, Egyptian tourism took some pretty serious hits with the Arab Spring and then the pandemic. Any positive news stories can only help their cause.
