- Reading & Northern Railroad's 2024 Iron Horse Rambles will feature new destinations (Tunkhannock and Pittston) as well as a new boarding location in Nesquehoning, PA.
This new station platform will be built on the former KME site which RBMN purchased in 2022. The platform itself will be built between Buildings 3 and 4 along a new siding that will parallel the mainline. It will be similar to the platform built in Pittston last year.
Preparations to the site are just getting underway now. A lot of work needs to be done before the first train can depart on June 22, 2024, so I will return here regularly during the construction to update you on the progress.

Good morning Jamie. Giving this one a rewatch.
Good afternoon Dennis! I hope you're doing well today. I've got Frankie draped over my left arm as I try to type this while Dany is staring out the window. We've been in the low 60's today but have also had thunderstorms. Hope you'll be able to get out and get some fresh air soon.
How exciting that someone (anywhere) is building a new station for passengers! Too often the train depots have been shut down, even in the larger towns. Good for PA.
Thanks Rosie! It is wonderful to see new stations being built in PA. This will be Reading & Northern's second new station in as many years.
Well done video with clear information Jamie. Looking forward to see the next ones.
Thanks so much! I'll be filming the next episode soon.
Love this! Great news. Nesquehoning was my childhood hometown and my grandfather Oscar Bengtson worked for the railroad in the 40s and 50s.
And today - I live in Tunkhannock.
Very cool!
2102 is coming to Tunkhannock on June 22 for the first time, it's boarding in Nesquehoning at the new campus where KME/Kovatch was. I'm going to be on it. They had 425 excursions to Jim Thorpe that boarded at Tunkhannock in the park, in Juky 2008, May 2009, and 2010. I was on the May 16, 2009 one. I live west of Allentown. Reading, Jim Thorpe, and Nesquehoning are closer boarding locations for me. I rode behind 765 that boarded west of Bethlehem on August 22, 2015, and it went on NS and RBMN tracks to Pittston and back with a brief stop in Jim Thorpe on the return trip. I rode behind 2102 from Reading to Jim Thorpe on Oct 1, 2022. I also rode behind it from South Hamburg to Temple in April 1988 and Emmaus to Pennsburg on Sept. 7, 1991. It was out of service from Oct 1991 to 2022 when it returned to service. 425 was out of service from 1997 to 2007, and again several years later a bit. So, from 1997-2007 R&N only operated diesels on excursion trains as well as when 425 went down for repairs several years later but it was under steam when 765 came through the Jim Thorpe area. It pulled some Gorge trains that weekend.
@@robkrasinski6217 cool, I hope you enjoy your ride on 6/22!
Great video Jaimie, Lots of exciting news. Thank you for getting the info out.
Thanks and you're welcome!
Wow, that's even alot more great news, looks like the R&N is finally getting bigger and expandable even a lot more to come. Congratulations and thanks for sharing!
Thanks! And there's definitely a lot of R&N growth coming. This new station is going to open up a lot of possibilities!
Cool!!! sweet Vid Jamie.
Thanks Blake!
Rewatching Amiga!
Thanks buddy!
Awesome video Jamie
Thanks Marilyn!
Great news! Was wondering where the Rambles were going to board once they announced them.
Glad this helped!
Only about a mile from the original Nesqehoning station.
The Fella who built the Nesqehoning lion’s club was,now the Dog Groomer was supposed to be the train station, but alas it never materialized.
But George Pauff, God rest his soul, is probably jumping for joy from his grave. This is something he wanted to see,and was instrumental in getting the Lions club house built.
I've seen the sign along the tracks for that station that never came, but I never knew anything more about it. Thanks for sharing!
Wow, Thats awesome news!! R&N is really serious about passenger travel service. And a run up to Tunkannock. I believe thats as far as that line goes, isn't it? This new repair facility will be exciting too. Lots going on with R&N expansion. Thanks for sharing, Jaime!! ☃☃☃
Glad you enjoyed the update! R&N track goes a bit further north up to Mehoopany. It would be cool if the Ramble went that far since I've never seen or been through the Vosburg tunnel, but this will still be some new and rare mileage for me.
That so exciting and another great thing for Carbon County! So glad you are documenting the progress Jamie! Take care!
Thanks, Ian! I look forward to sharing the rest of the progress with everyone, and it'll definitely be a great thing for the area.
Good morning Jamie. Thank you for this update! This is very exciting news!
Good afternoon, Kevin! Glad you enjoyed the update, and there will be more to come.
I'm riding the June 22nd Rambler to Tunkhannock. It's going to be epic and history making as well! Can't wait to see the new station!
Awesome! IMO that's the most exciting trip this season, hope you enjoy it.
Tbh, I think when the Nesquehoning station is built. I think along with the shuttles to Jim Thorpe, maybe they will bring back the Hometown High Bridge Trains.
I'd love to see that happen!
Very nice. Although I’m more excited about the locomotive/car shop. One must be true to one’s nature.
That is a cool new thing happening there too, I'll film more of that on the next episode to share with everyone.
Good afternoon Jamie great video 😊
Thanks!
Awsome Video Jaime!!!! When I heard this site was bought by R&N I knew they would do something AWESOME With it! I really can’t believe a STATION is going here! This area will be a very big eye sore for the town, But in a Good way! Cant wait to see more updates! Have a Good Friday Jaime!!!
Scott
Thanks, Scott! Glad you enjoyed the update, and I'll definitely be back to film more when there's more to show. The station will be great for Nesquehoning and the surrounding area.
@@JamieMakin You Better belive it! Im super excited!
Great video! I just saw the NRFF in the beginning of February at this spot and me and my friends were pointing out these buildings because he saw the remnants of the KME logo so we thought it was cool to see that! I wonder if RBMN is gonna keep the other buildings there or if they are gonna demolish them.
Cool that you and your friends caught the NRFF there. I enjoy filming there right because it's so wide and open. As far as I know all of the buildings will be remaining, and RBMN has been moving into more of them recently. As with everything on the railroad though, that could always change.
Great Video Jamie! I didn't realize they could lay track on a macadam base. I thought they would have had to dig it up and build a roadbed for the track.
It's my understanding that the tracks will ultimately end up embedded in the asphalt. It's going to cut through a large part of the parking area, so cars will have to be able to drive over it. I think that's just on ties for now because they wanted to get the switch put in.
@@JamieMakin I understand. Thanks for the info! keep up your great videos!
Can wait to see what it looks like when it’s finished! Especially since I’ll be riding the Iron Horse Ramble on June 22nd in the Salisbury Beach.
I'll be back to film more videos there as they make more progress. Next Monday's video will be my walkthrough of Salisbury Beach. Really nice car!
@@JamieMakin Looking forward to watching that video on the Salisbury Beach!
Is this where they’re gonna be launching the Iron Horse Rambles that are meant to start in Nesquehoning? Also, I wish them a smooth construction process and good luck!
Yes it is the new boarding and starting location for two of this year's Iron Horse Rambles. I'll be back with future updates as there's more to show.
I think I notice it while during last year 2102 Sunday run back in August. Good for the R&N.
Yep, that Ramble passed right through there.
❤️🐐❤
Hey buddy! I hope you're on the mend my friend, love and prayers heading your way!
Cool! Is there rails buried in the blacktop that once led to building 3? These new rails looks like 115 Pound rail. New subscriber here!
Thanks, Josh! And welcome to the channel! They are going to bury the new rails in the blacktop. As far as I know there were never rails before Reading & Northern bought it.
I wonder if they're gonna start up some regular commuter passenger service soon
I'd say that's highly unlikely given that none of the locations along the RBMN mainline are major commuter destinations. The railroad did say in yesterday's press release there will be shuttles from Nesquehoning to Jim Thorpe to alleviate congestion and help with parking issues, so that's something else to look forward to.
Actually Conrail and SEPTA operated commuter trains from Philly to Pottsville until 1981. Amtrak is going to start train service over NS between Philly and Reading, and maybe R&N could have RDC or diesel hauled service to Pottsville, and even Tamaqua and Jim Thorpe like they do now, but how could R&N and Amtrak meet in Reading? R&N can't go onto NS with passenger trains due to liability insurance reasons and a lot of R&N's open window coach fleet has friction bearings but I read that they are converting some coaches to roller bearings for easier maintenance. It would just be easier to have bus shuttles between Franklin St. Station and RBMN's Outer Station.
Do you think it’ll be done in time for the June Ironhorse rambles?
Most definitely!
@@JamieMakin SWEEET I’ll be going
Hi Jamie!
Thank you for the update. Glad to know that they're making progress.
Are they going to use the larger building for a car shop?
Hi Henry, glad you enjoyed it! I'll be back to make more videos as there's progress to show. And they will be using Building 3 as a locomotive and car shop.
i live here
Cool!
Are the rambles really going up to tunkhannock since thats quite far from Reading
Yes, but as I explained in the video that Ramble will be departing from Nesquehoning, not Reading.
Awesome can't wait to see the finished product sounds like it would make for a nice long weekend trip. How far is that from Glen Rock PA
It's a bit more than 2 hours away from Glen Rock, PA. I'll be back to film update videos when there's more to show.
Great thank you
