  • Learn about the TearCare dry eye treatment, how it works and is TearCare worth it in our complete TearCare review.
    Dry eye disease is a common eye disorder that causes dry, burning, red eyes and fluctuating vision. Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is the leading cause of dry eye disease, and plays a role in about 86% of cases.
    TearCare is an in-office, open eye, dry eye treatment offered through Cleveland Eye Clinic. It was specifically designed to help heat the meibomian glands and help them express any thickened and inflamed oils trapped in the glands. Once the glands are heated, a second step of expression is performed by the doctor to clear the glands and begin the road to healthier eyes.

    Had the procedure this morning (not Clear Choice). Eyes very sore after expression phase, which was quite painful due to aggressive use of tweezers. She sent me home with anti-inflammatory drops for next couple of days (no extra charge - surprise!) and oil-based OTC eye drops to use as needed. Will be about 4-6 wks to see results bc oil glands were squeezed dry and takes a while to restore. Honestly, really uncomfortable. When a doctor says this is gonna' hurt, well it did. But if they told you before you went for the procedure no one would go through with it and if it helps as much as it's supposed to it's worth the 5 minutes of pain. Plus having heating strips on upper and lower lids for 15 minutes felt like burning but they assured it wasn't, and indeed there were no burns after, but I wouldn't exactly say it was relaxing like they said. After the heating strips the dr manually squeezes your upper and lower lids REALLY HARD with a tweezer and wipes with a swab. She said close your teeth and breathe in and out through the nose. Sort of like biting on a bullet in the olden days. And let her know if you need a break. I requested a few short breaks but did my best to tough it out bc it's gonna hurt as soon as the break is over so might as well get it over with. She said I did great, which makes me wonder if most patients are moaning and groaning. Have fun. Sure hope it helps. I self-paid $695 with a $100 rebate but may not qualify bc I have Medicare Advantage altho it did not pay anything for the procedure. I called TearCare and the agent said go ahead and apply, hopefully you'll get the rebate. Honestly, not really sure what is actually the TearCare phase bc the heating part comes first but then when the dr does the expression, I'm not sure if that is part of tearcare. They outta' be ashamed charging so much just for a couple of heating strips.

      that's America's healthcare for you. They could easily just manufacture covers that go over the strips, so they could reuse the strips..But of course you "need" to order entire new probes each time! lol. Healthcare companies won't design anything unless they can make big $$$

    During the expression phase, does it hurt? Also are we allowed to wear earphones to listen to music?

      The expression doesn't hurt--it does feel awkward since not used to having eyelids "squeezed". It feels like squeezing the skin between the thumb and first finger--weird but not painful. With regards to the earphones, they can be worn during the 15 minutes of heat application. They can also be worn during the expression but that only takes 1 min per lid and there are some instructions during (ie. look up, blink, etc) that the patient needs to be able to hear.

    ‘Feels good’ , I have believed … how much does it cost ? And how often is it necessary to repeat ?

    • @ClearChoiceLaser
      @ClearChoiceLaser  Před 2 lety +2

      Approximately $900. The best frequency depends on the patient. Many patients experience improvement with 1-2 x per year.

      @@ClearChoiceLaser Are you aware of insurance covering any dry eye treatments. My insurance does cover prescription eye drops which is nice but so far not much relief from my dry eyes.

    • @ClearChoiceLaser

      We are not familiar with insurance covering dry eye treatments. Medical and flexible spending accounts can be a good alternative.

    Very costly do have any machine you can do yourself

      You could not possibly do it yourself bc it involves expression after heating. But am I really sure it's worth it? Will not know for a few weeks. I can't imagine why it costs so much. All it does is heat your eyelids and then the doctor does all the manual labor.

    This video makes it sound like dry eyes are from wearing masks in the pandemic. Very shortsighted. Much chronic dry eye is caused by MGD, chronic, common. People try all kinds of things to find relief, this is just one tool in the toolkit. Does not work for all patients. Hopefully over time more research and treatments will emerge. Chronic dryness can become a money pit.
