Christopher Walken has done loads more than most film fans realize. This fine tribute to Kelly is sincerely done, not solely narrated, and a good example of his love for the craft and his life's works.
I'm so glad Walken did this! Gene deserves to be seen again in modern culture. He is exactly what Walken describes as graceful, elegant and always masculine. That's an unbeatable combination.
My mother introduced the family to Singin' In The Rain. As she lay on her death bed, the family was around her and my brother played the clip from "Good Morning".
There is no better way to put it than Christopher Walken just said it...Gene Kelly WAS the triple threat and make that quadruple threat...the guy was gorgeous!!
As a dancer, Gene Kelly was capable of physical feats that, today, we would associate with Captain America. In addition, he was not just a great actor, he was a great COMIC actor: His several films with Frank Sinatra attest to this.
At age 6 I saw him in Singin' in the Rain on TCM with my parents. After that day I went into theater and I did my first play. Now I still act and I'm majoring in Theater. I'm looking to get into the business. Kelly is my number 1 inspiration. I would like to thank Kelly for inspiring me throughout all these years. You are still on of the best actors that ever lived.
Thank you Christopher Walken - you are also utterly compelling - from the first time I saw you in DEER HUNTER. It means a lot of hear you commenting on the unforgettable Gene Kelly.
The thing I’ve always liked best about Gene Kelly is his wonderful smile. Come to think of it, maybe he has that smile because of his dancing. But, maybe he danced so well because of his delightful attitude, which showed in his smile! 😊🥰
I adored Gene Kelly when I was a kid. My dad's family had been dancers and musicians in Vaudeville in the 20's. I loved those stories. My dad was a fabulous dancer himself and that was his secret wish, was to have been a professional dancer. We watched every musical over and over. Gene was so handsome sauve and debonair. the best. There are lots of very talented kids hoofing these days but still Gene had IT all
Gene Kelly was amazing. He kept you spellbound with his masculine moves and artistry. He had various consummate talents but his own method of dancing was unique among dancers and just magic. My favorite of any dancer ever, he entertained, wowed you with his athletic style yet also with majestic beautiful expressive routines. He could dance with anyone from a mouse, to a beginner like Debbie Reynolds, or ballet trained Cyd Charisse, easily and with total commitment. Those years he danced into our hearts and into a little girls to woman’s awe, was a privilege and lasting wonderful memory. Tears were even shed upon hearing of his death. He was a joy to behold.
Gene Kelly is so exciting to watch, especially the way he dances! Oooh I really love the way he dances!!! And the way he sings to a girl (movie Cover Girl), ..I just melt every time and wish I was her! He was indeed very charming, sexy, funny, energetic, handsome. Pretty much everything a girl dreams about. I wish I could have met him, he was just wonderful!
I wonder why everyone was so surprised when Walken got up to dance. Back then, actors had training in more than one area. I once saw Steve Buscemi sing in a movie and was surprised he had a very good voice.
Gene Kelly was one of the “greatest” all around entertainer HOLLYWOOD ever had. Dance, sing, comedy, drama, stunts, directing, choreography, etc... he was truly a grand master of the industry.
Gorgeous Gene Kelly My all time favourite performer. What a lovely tribute to multitalented man. Who is unsurpassed in his unique talent A man who brought sexy masculinity to dancing. Love you Gene always. 💞
Diane Juhola, I agree, but (if you haven't already) check out the great Tommy Rall (KISS ME KATE, 7 BRIDES FOR 7 BROTHERS, MY SISTER EILEEN, among others, including the same PENNIES FROM HEAVEN Christopher W. talks about here, and the Swan Lake sequence in FUNNY GIRL, where he partners Barbra's Fanny Brice). Another hoofer worth checking out is Marc Platt, who's also in 7 BRIDES, but makes his biggest impact in TONIGHT AND EVERY NIGHT.
Gene Kelly had a great interest in ballet (more so than Fred Astaire, who wished himself sometimes to be cast in 'Everyman' roles), and incorporated ballet sequences into several of his films (e.g., An American in Paris, Words and Music, On the Town). Cyd Charisse was herself originally a ballet dancer and drew compliments from both Kelly and Astaire.
But, he hated that Cyd Charisse was taller than he was. She had to work continually to stay very low and into the floor even tho she had the heavy ballet background.
Gene Kelly had it all. Looks, talent, and a lot of charisma. He made dancing look so masculine but graceful. There was nothing feminine about his moves. He was a man women loved a men wanted to be. No other performer can do all the things he did. One in a million. Still miss you Gene.
This is another example of why TCM is the best channel on TV, especially for those who love classic films, or just film in general. They respect the films and never show commercials during the movie and show them unedited and in the format that they were shown in theatres - i.e. widescreen. And the network is choc full of wonderful tidbits like Walken's tribute here. You learn so much. For a movie lover, TCM is heaven.
Agreed. I love these tributes from great actors of the present to great actors of the past. Watch the one where Michael Caine pays tribute to Cary Grant. It's really outstanding.
2 people are threatened by 1 dead dude and 1 almost dead guy's manliness. Both Gene Kelly and Christopher Walken are legends. Thank you for sharing this video.
I've met some names in theater and they're all just people, some nice, some not so much. I never got the chance to meet Gene Kelly. He's one of the few I would have been starstruck by.
Gene Kelly was handsome, could sing, act and had of some of the best dancing ever, I have been watching his movies and The Pirate, his dancing skills, blew me away and their is a scene with the Nicholas Brothers. The Nicholas Brothers were also some of the best dancers ever.
I first saw Walken dance in Pennies From Heaven. He deserved Kelly's praise. Walken's dance displayed all the power, agility, and ferocity of a jungle cat.
Hollywood was built on the foundation laid by people like Gene Kelly and for this, it has survived! Thankfully, these men and women found their true calling in life and inspired us all!
Walken, like Hugh Jackman, would have ornamented the Golden Age. One of the few Broadway talents of his time who made the journey to Hollywood, but it no longer knows how to deploy triple threats. Shame he had to meet Kelly when doing 'Pennies from Heaven". It stank.
Geez, what a find! I worked with Gene for an hour (recording a short bit in his house as a recordist/engineer (one one one - talk about scary), but he chastised me for being a few minutes late (which I'd absorbed), but one total by the book, businessman, got down to business. I set up in his huge entertainment room (30'+ ceiling, wall-in fireplace entertainment room, and set up at what appeared as a poker table. Long-haired (Sunset Strip rocker, I was at the time), I set my Tascam 4-track up at his gaming table, then made typical adjustments. Once comfy, Gene began to read this script, to be sent to French television, for a Cyd Charisse lifetime award show for France. I was scared shi*less, but managed my way through that afternoon in Beverly Hills. If you want to hear the actual recording, search MacLachlan and Gene Kelly. What a freaking day... Lol
Gene Kelly was the best dancer ever.I loved his masculinity and athleticism as well as his style and talent. He made wonderful movies with such original routines.I know Astaire was great but he did not appeal to me.Kelly was the one.I was depressed for days when he died.I miss him still.

The the dance he did with the unknown actress . Show the world would love should really be in the way it should be felt .
Thank you for such a beautiful insight to a man I adored and seriously loved without unfortunately ever meeting....maybe in heaven......Love you Gene xoxoxoxox
Gene Kelly got much of his dance style from The Nicholas Brothers. He credited them as being the greatest dancers to have ever been filmed. (So did Fred Astaire.) Kelly’s dream was to do a dance number with them and he fulfilled that dream. He said afterward that he was nervous because he knew how great they were and he wanted to be sure he would be able to keep up with them.
I've had a lifelong crush on Gene Kelly! He exuded a kindness and sincerity that no other actor of his time did. You couldn't help but fall in love with him.
In the Three Musketeers, Gene Kelly's fencing performance is both High art and quite deadly. You can see how his dancing skills blended into the sword fighting. Amazing.
@Salobrena Smith Since they aren't making musicals as often, how do you know most actors can sing and dance? And those that do, just how good are they compared to Old Hollywood? When sound came in, a lot of actors and actresses that went into movies came from theater. Now, some do it in reverse. But there is a difference between being 'theater trained' and joining a Broadway show, as they do nowadays. And while there are a number of good actors out there, they squander their talents making movies for Marvel...I detest them, both movies and actors.

Christopher Walken was on Broadway in the '60s in the musical "High Spirits" with Tammy Grimes. He didn't have a lead, but he acted, danced, and sang. He knew what a triple threat was.
Inherit the Wind was (and is) a fabulous movie, one of my all time favorites, and Gene Kelly was terrific, every bit a good as Spencer Tracy and Fredric March.
Understand he was a nightmare to work with. He demanded perfection out of his co-stars. He was pretty hard on Debbie Reynolds in Singing in the Rain, but look how good she looked in that movie!
I watched "Inherit the Wind" again very recently and completely agree with Walken. Kelly turned in a serious dramatic performance. There was a closing dialog with Tracy and Kelly that was breathtaking in its intensity. He had some razor-sharp lines and he delivered them perfectly.
A superb documentary...about a great, great actor, dancer, singer, actor, athlete, choreographer, good looking American guy. Wonderful narration by Christopher Walken too👏👏👏👏👏👏😊😄😉👍👍🎄

Chris Walken paying homage to Gene Kelly....priceless. Thus is my new favorite clip. I'll be watching it for inspiration. Absolutely love this.

Listening to Christopher Walken talk about Gene Kelly? Heaven.
INDEED
He has to be Heaven...
I am not crazy about Gene, but could listen to Chris Walken talk about him to infinity and beyond.
I know right.
@tigr Flwer - I totally agree. He wasn't just citing words, he believed and felt them. In turn, we felt them too.
During some sad days it was the films of Gene Kelly that gave me a lighter heart. I absolutely adore him!!
My mother introduced the family to Singin' In The Rain. As she lay on her death bed, the family was around her and my brother played the clip from "Good Morning".
A lot of people don't realize that Christopher Walken has a dance scene in almost every movie he is in.
There is no better way to put it than Christopher Walken just said it...Gene Kelly WAS the triple threat and make that quadruple threat...the guy was gorgeous!!
I had a big crush on him as a small child❤️
its really a shame that it fades and crumbles into time.
No one knows that the old shade in the chair used to dance and laugh like you do today.
Can't beat those Irish genes!
I always thought that I was the only one who considered Kelly handsome. His smile was incredible
sexiest man alive (in our hearts)

Gene Kelly was a good looking guy, especially when he smiled.
OMG! He is my biggest Hollywood crush. His smile makes me melt like a school girl! He.s smokin hot.
Oh when he smiled, I smile too and blush 😊😘❤️
I understand he was a tough guy behind the scenes....then the smile would fade.
I loved how he smiled with his eyes 😍
Hmm. I would say sort of handsome but only good looking when he smiled.
Women who danced w/both Kelly & Astaire said Fred was for himself, while Gene helped perfect his partners' performances.
Thank you Christopher Walken - you are also utterly compelling - from the first time I saw you in DEER HUNTER. It means a lot of hear you commenting on the unforgettable Gene Kelly.
