      Had an old machinist work on the farm years ago , I was making an exhaust for my car and was going to braze it because I figured it was too thin to arc weld .. He said let me do that for you ,I thought "this should be fun " He arc welded it and it locked nice .. He taught me how to just drag a bead across the joint and if done properly did not blow through and looked like someone had mig welded it ...

    • @jameszulu7120
      @jameszulu7120 Před rokem +1

      Glad to know someone else calls it Texas tig. And yes you really need to remove the flux to for it to work. Using a 3/32 rod of 7018 with the flux removed does the trick.

  • @kennethfrancis782
    @kennethfrancis782 Před rokem +27

    Everyone who wants to weld needs to start with a thin project IMO. Whether mig or flux core I think the same method applies. turn your amps up a little hot and spot your way along. Once you learn to stop blowing holes in thin stuff your thicker projects are going to have a significantly easier learning curve.

    • @adamwilliams5426
      @adamwilliams5426 Před rokem +1

      You may get the opposite effect then with lack of penetration on the thicker stuff.

    • @commentsedited
      @commentsedited Před rokem

      I disagree with you 100% person needs to drop the amps. And feed welding thicker material, you often run multiple passes. 5 " to 1",thickness, isn't going to hold with a single pass. If you are welding 18 Guage and thicker. A good welder can do it using .045. But if you don't have a few years experience, I'd recommend. 028 for 18- and thinner. Or maybe gas weld it using a triple 0 ( 000) gas welding tip or smaller.
      I started welding in 1978. Just retired last year due to wear and tear on the body. I understand weekend welders perspective. But concerning the industry standards. You are mistaken.

Stitching is not welding !! If you welded this with a 2.5mm rod from the top down on 75 Amps you can run a full bead .

  • @byron7165
    @byron7165 Před rokem +13

    Chosing the correct rod and amperage settings will give you a superior weld both structurlly and asthetically. Just because you can strike an arc doesn't mean you can weld. What you're doing here, everytime you restart the arc, is pull the impurities the previous weld's flux brought to the surface back into your weld. Not a good weld by any stretch. #hownottoweld #CertifiedGapWelder

    • @ron1martens
      @ron1martens Před rokem +1

      That sounds right. It means every time you strike an arc stop, clean and strike again, I tried to repair my wheel barrow as the bowl is .5mm thick. I tried stick and mig. The mig on low voltage built up and when I grinded I was not satisfied with the penetration. Then I used stick and turned up the amperage to do the stop start method stopping to brush after each strike. Well. it built up a solid weld although increasing holes once patching to the old .5mm steel. I heard you can use copper and mig weld onto that.
      When I first started welding a couple of decades ago I used nails to span large openings and was very lazy in cleaning work before welding.

    • @byron7165
      @byron7165 Před rokem +1

      @@ron1martens mig (GMAW) you dont need to clean. FCAW you do. So if you're using gas you can pulse the gun with higher amperage without the constant cwire brushing. FCAW is only good, in my opinion, for welding outside where your gas shield is likely to be blown away. Dual shield is good though.

  • @TheRoostersGarage
    @TheRoostersGarage Před rokem +14

    Inclusions and porosity! I'm no expert and still learning myself, but your amperage was WAY too high the first go round. The second is honestly pretty garbage. You welded over your slag and you could probably break that weld very easily. On your old welding trick, that's also called Texas Tig and yes you are adding additional filler metal when you have a huge hole to fill. In the case of this video, you had to resort to it due to improper skills and poor technique which resulted in horrible fit-up. With my welder I have run a 3/32" (2mm) rod down to 60 amps with hot start on 1/8" steel. It still blows the hole at the beginning, but I can go back and fill it up as I'm running a bead and the bead is the correct temperature. I haven't had to weld anything thinner just yet with my stick welder, but you could Texas Tig thinner metal directing the heat towards the thicker filler rod which will melt both sides of the weld pool. If it's too thin, TIG or MIG weld it. There's a reason there are other welding processes.

Now I get frisky with it and tig braze it or I acetylene braze it just for kicks and giggles. Seals alot better than most anything though especially half rusted out and to thin to really even mig weld the tubing. Best part with brazing, doesn't have to be super clean pipe.

    some people comment that if you have the right amperage/rod/skill you could stick weld thin metal like this with a continuous bead. I've never seen it. Show me. Post a link.

      I don't have a video but it is possible to weld thin metal. You "weave" the rod back and forth to keep the arc but it keeps the heat lower than just straight line pass. DC current works better for thinner metals in my opinion because it's a steady arc.

  • @_multiverse_

    I don't think they had tiktok welding tutorials in the 60s...this weld is full of slag inclusions and is not as strong as it could be.
    A proper welder would use a smaller diameter elecrode, lower amperage and switch to straight polarity on thin material.
    Also, I'd like to see this method used with 7018, it's not possible which is why he's most likely using 6011 or 6010.
    Don't believe everything you see on the internet kids.

    All of that wont hold. We call that spot welding your better off without a flux produced weld. Because your trapping slag aka flux causing uncertainty in the penetration of the weld if you turn your amperage down you should be able to penetrate without eating the metal

    Dude you’re embarrassing yourself. First- when welding a notched pipe, start in middle, go down one way, then another bead from middle down the other side. And wouldn’t recommend doing with stick, I’d use mig. Plus, no shop ever would approve that garbage. The green check marked weld you did, terrible. You could stitch weld or the whip method if that’s what you’re going for, or use a 6010 rod

    this start-stop method wont work on 7018 or 6018..because it burns up into the flux and then to restart you have to tapm it way too many times to get it tpo restart...THE REAL SECRET IS 6010 ROD..YOU can restart immediately..time after time.actually ,if its important or xrayed it wont fly as youll have flux in the weld...its ok for a jake leg just trying to get by!..but i bet in an xray ,YOU WOULD BE FLUXED!
