Franz Stieglers flight instructor had once told him that if he ever got caught shooting someone in a parachute, he would kill him himself. Stieglers opinion was that the B52 was so damaged that it equals hanging in a parachute, and therefore, he wouldn't shoot. Sorry part of this story is when it came out, Stiegler got into trouble. Neighbours shouting Nazi after him and from Germany came letters calling him traitor.
I love the fact that Sabaton has made this story known and that his bravery and compassion during wartime is recognised.

      Correction: The Pub wasn't a B-52, it was a B-17, a "Flying Fortress."
The B-52 hadn't been developed yet in 1943.

Just think how Franz Stigler's grandson must have felt when he heard his favorite band singing about his Grandpa!
I guarantee you that it is a day that he will always cherish!

Great reaction to this great video. You talked about the Christmas Truce of World War I, well, Sabaton has a video for that too. That's what this band does, it sings about history. Maybe your next reaction should be Christmas Truce by Sabaton.

The Killing Machine lyric was because Franz was an ace pilot. He was one of the very best. The fact that he survived to the end of the war is proof of that. Charlie was a sort of newbie who had also lied about his age to impress other soldiers.
In an interview, Franz said as he was lining up the shot, he saw the tail gunner bleeding profusely and couldn't do it.
He also flew close enough to them that ground weapons couldn't fire, for fear of hitting him, too. An amazing guy!

One of a few thins that can make me tear up. day to day, we see some people's actions that kills our compassion to others. Franz was an active combatant in the biggest war in history. Yet he chose hope and compassion. In the thickest fog of war, he chose to follow the light of humanity.

I can recomend my favorite of their songs but unfortuantly even Sabaton forget about her because they reupload or refresh their old songs exept this one. But still it`s really good, It called "Light in the Black". This song is dedicated to UN peacekeeper

I am not sure if WW1 or WW2 is the most sung about topic by Sabaton. I would think it was WW2 simply because it's most recent, aswell as being well documented compared to older wars(but Sabaton made a WW1 album in 2022 so maybe it's changed).
You mentioned the football match in WW1, Sabaton actually made a song about just that called Christmas Truce! Maybe you will get to it ;)

I remember how in video of the meeting Franz say.
"Plane was damaged and only ball turret was operational but he cannot reach me. Tail gunner was dead because his barrels was up.... For me it was same like shot them on the parachute."
Franz was a vereran in this time so for him it would be easy shot them down and thanks to them he will have number of a medal. Knights cross.
But he chose honor before medal and he chose well.
Even when his neighbours called him Nazi and Germans traitor because of his act most of population on the internet know him as a hero.

Every time I watch this music video I am always amazed at the durability of the B 17. What a great tough beast. But the B 17s also had a high price to pay. Just behind the German submariners, the Allied bomber crews had the second highest casualty rate. That was also one of the reasons why the incident was kept secret. The crews should not expect that they would always be spared from friendly German fighter pilots.
In addition to the instructions from Stigler's flight instructor, he also had another, very personal reason: When he saw the dead tailgunner, he thought of his dead brother and thought: what would have happened if someone had spared him. The ace Stigler was one of the first jet fighter pilots in world history in 1945.

    • @xsezz
      @xsezz  Před 9 měsíci +1

    Great reaction.
Winter at those altitudes over northern Germany easily means-60 Celcius (-77F) then windchill from minimum 150km/h (90mph) roughly the lowest speed it could still fly, that is indeed a bad situation. max sustainable speed was 430km/h (265mph) but with only one fully working engine... say 160km/hm still bad
