The size of the UK military is a fraction of what it was even 25 years ago. In the late 60s the Navy had over 100k personnel, today 32.5k including Royal Marines. The tasks they are required to do haven't reduced by very much. The Tattoo takes a large number of personnel out of normal duties for a long period. The pipe bands are mostly civilian. Many of the military personnel on duty here are local Reservists.
