  • Highlights from the October 26, 1989 game between Hawaii and BYU at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu. BYU was a ranked team and featured future Heisman winner Ty Detmer at QB. Hawaii had lost every encounter with BYU since joining the WAC, often in heartbreaking fashion, and was coming off a disappointing loss against Colorado State. And yet sometimes the stars do seem to align, and for that moment at least, magic occurs.

I was in the military, stationed on the east coast. Game didn't start until 11pm, but I stayed up to watch history go down!

I was 6 years old watching this game. My family's season tickets were the second to the top row in the yellow section. And i still had to stand up to see the action. Thats when the stadium was truely packed. I watched this game so much on betamax i memorized every line from jim leahey's play by play. Gotta love the old rivalry.

I was there with my dad.....Jim Leahy and Rick Blangiardi were the best announcers in the game.

The mystery of the Red Dot is now solved, after stumbling upon this from The Helmet Project i just found it weird that it had been completly forgotten in just 10 or 15 years so i made it a pet project. After scrolling through every mention of the game in the old Daily Universe and Provo Daily Herald archives i came up with a Flanders full of diddly. So i ran the trail cold until 7 years later in 2004. I was at a diner in Texarcana, TX and picked up a conversation from a pair of good ol' boys behind me who talked about 80s BYU games. Turns out they were on the grounds crew back in the day and had were talking about the Holiday Bowl against Penn St. which was just 2 months after the Dot Game. So naturally i asked and filled them in on the mystery involved which lead to some hearty laughter, because as it turns out the Red Dot was a prank pulled by the senior class of Hawai'i, they swapped out the left side logo for a red dot to represent a sniper's target, as in 'we have you in our sights'. Which given the 52-14 schellacing we got they were right. But, because of the prank and the lopsided score it was downplayed to the point to which it was basically forgotten. So now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

What? Are you saying the "senior class of Hawai'i" somehow gained access to BYU's helmets before the game and changed the helmet decals?

Actually this as been disproved - according to the Provo Daily Herald a couple days after the game, Matt Bellini said: “We wore those red dots on our helmets that said ‘Say No to drugs’ but you wouldn’t know it. The way we played, it was like we were on drugs.”

Very few people actually know the true story behind the Red Dot. My name is Becky Knudson Weech and I was with BYUSA heading up the Red Ribbon Week about Drug Awareness. Coach Edwards and I discussed how the football team could support this cause and represent BYU's efforts to help raise awareness of the dangers of drugs. Coach did some research and called me back and said the team could wear a red dot on their helmet. However, Red Ribbon week wasn't actually until the following week when BYU had a home game but Coach Edwards was such a generous and great guy he graciously told me they were even going to wear them against Hawaii the previous week as well. Needless to say, the dots were not on their helmets the following week which was actually Red Ribbon week. I met Ty Detmer a couple of months later with some of his teammates and out of the blue asked him if he really thought a sticker was to blame for their loss to Hawaii? His jaw dropped and he gasped: "That was YOU"? Then he grabbed his buddies, basically his offensive line, and said she's the one who made us wear those dots!! Apparently Coach didn't take any blame for his part in it!! They didn't kill me and took my heckling well and we had a good laugh, and I have a great story to tell at parties.

I think it was supposed to represent Japan's invasion of Pearl Harbor. This was a critical game for BYU. Obviously it backfired. IMHO.

In those days, KHNL would replay the game the same night and the next day. They didn't have the game on Pay Per View, so either you go to the game, or you have to wait to watch it. With PPV now, people pay for one game, their friends all come over to watch, and instead of going to the game and worrying about the crowd, long lines for the bathroom, they can make whatever food they want, and not have to worry about drunk driving and traffic.
