  • While I support some chiropractic efforts in the lumbar spine, I don’t support “popping” joints, cervical manipulation, or Y-strap traction. In this video I explain the risks of Y-strap manipulations to hopefully educate and inform!

After having had the Y strap done on myself (and loving the results), and having listened to the opinions of this professional spine doctor, I believe there needs to be some concrete Y strap studies done by impartial 3rd parties (not chiropractors and not spine doctors and not Y strap manufacturers). It's called science.

Y strap is not meant to adjust. It’s a decompression technique. Machines do the same movement just slower. So what you’re saying is traction all together is non effective. It just goes back. Also it doesn’t go around their chin, it’s the base of their skull.
A lot of what you’re saying is speculation. This technique has been around for 40 years. Why hasn’t it been banned prior? They’re not trying to dislocate the skull. It is jarring and scary but having bones nearly fusing themselves together is also scary and painful. Most having y-strap are getting it as part of a treatment program. It’s not just y-strap. If it was I’d be on your side. However, when people live with chronic pain and compression of those vital and sacred things in and around the vertebrae, this rapid traction technique will cause relief. Not just some euphoric I didn’t die fog.
You have valid points and I respect your anatomical analysis. But when you’re doing something like this you should understand the process and what it’s used for before spouting your own opinions. Watching a video short doesn’t make you understand a process. Be careful when giving information. Stick to facts so you don’t make accusations or false claims about people, techniques, or motivations.

Why isn't Y-strap traction made an illegal practice whereby chiropractic doctors would be disciplined? If it's so dangerous then a regulatory body should legislate accordingly.

There needs to be scientific studies done before you can pass legislation. Just because one spine doctor is of the opinion that it is too dangerous and should not be done is not enough for me to call for it to be outlawed. Maybe spine surgery should be outlawed. lol I would not be surprised if real studies were done that showed spine surgeries are much more dangerous than the Y strap. Impartial, 3rd party studies need to be conducted on the Y strap. I am not pro or con for the Y strap but I did have it performed on myself and it seems to have helped me by lowering the level of my constant chronic low grade pain (40 years going now).

The purpose is not to take the skull off the spine. The procedure's purpose is to pen the facet joints. It's helpful for the discs because it helps hydrate them by reducing the pressure on them. Chiropractors ask a lot of questions before doing this procedure to prevent harm. Also, many people do have relief. This person seems like he wants more people to go through surgery than have them have relief without surgery.

My most recent chiropractor uses an instrument that gently taps on me and that's all it takes to get stuff back in place. Now I have degenerative disc scoliosis which they told me there was nothing they could do to correct it, only stop it from getting worse. I'm in such horrid pain most of the time I was willing to try anything but of course it didn't help my pain. I think I've figured out the pain is from the big back muscle being constantly inflamed and swollen. I get a tiny bit of relief from the trigger point shots but they only last about 4 days. I'm truly at a loss and sick to death of living with this pain because honestly I'm not living, just hanging around waiting to die.

Pad I let this quack dentist do this, I would have no teeth that would have a $40,000 bill to pay off since insurance doesn't cover implants. I'm not saying that you don't need surgery I'm just saying before you do get surgery get two or three opinions from different doctors and then go from there and make the best choice possible for yourself. It's simply astounding to witness the depth of ignorance exhibited by one such as yourself, Dr. Donnally, particularly when the topic at hand is the realm of Chiropractic and the Y-strap adjustment. Your misguided assumption that the Y-strap is a potential cause for vertebral artery injury is a testament to your limited understanding. It's actually the lateral adjustments that carry a modicum of risk of such injury, and even then, the probability of a stroke is minuscule.
The fact that life is fraught with risk is a universally accepted truth. The irony, of course, is that your comparison neglects to mention the considerably higher risks we take each day as we engage in mundane activities such as driving. And speaking of risks... aren't you a Spine Surgeon? The hazards associated with your profession dwarf those attributed to chiropractic adjustments.
Your trade involves the literal invasion of the body's integrity, slicing through skin, muscles, nerves, and tendons. The litany of complications ranges from infection, bleeding and hematoma, dural tears, and cerebrospinal fluid leakage, to nerve damage or neurological complications, hardware fracture or malfunction, nonunion of the vertebrae, deep vein thrombosis, anesthesia risks, chronic pain, and the humiliating necessity for reoperation following unsuccessful attempts to eradicate symptoms.
It is vital to emphasize as well, that after a chiropractic adjustment-when the patient feels immediate relief-it is then incumbent upon the patient to engage in the necessary corrective actions to tackle the underlying issues that brought them to the chiropractor in the first place. Each patient's path to recovery will, of course, be specific to their unique circumstances. In stark contrast, those undergoing surgery face an even more daunting challenge. They are compelled to not only embark on their own corrective regime but also manage the healing of surgical wounds, which inevitably adds layers of complexity and extends their recovery timeline.
As someone well-versed in the field of surgery, you surely understand that many patients fail to strictly adhere to post-operative protocols, which can lead to further complications. Consequently, they find themselves wrestling with long-term issues stemming from the surgery itself, on top of dealing with the initial problems that prompted them to seek medical attention in the first place.
Do understand that I'm not asserting there's no place for spinal surgery, for in certain cases it's nothing short of miraculous. However, your skewed portrayal of chiropractic as an inherently dangerous practice is grossly misleading and displays an alarming bias. You belittle the Y-strap as though the countless videos showcasing its successful application simply vanish into oblivion.
Dr. Joseph Cipriano DC has amassed a staggering 900+ videos on CZcams alone, bearing witness to the efficacy of the Y-strap adjustment, with Dr. Alex Tubio following closely with over 800+ such videos. Hundreds upon hundreds of people weep in relief, their symptoms alleviated in an instant in most cases.
In addition, it is highly inappropriate and ineffectual to assess your practice by juxtaposing it with the least proficient examples from another field, as you often do by cherry-picking the least favorable chiropractic cases. It's akin to using the most inept or dire scenarios from chiropractic practice and unfairly comparing them to an average or even a best-case surgical outcome. Your methods of comparison do not stand up to logical scrutiny, demonstrating a notable lack of balanced analysis.
The audacity with which you make unfounded claims about a field far removed from your expertise is, frankly, appalling. One would hope that you'd take the time to educate yourself before formulating an opinion on the Y-strap adjustment, lest you dissuade those who might genuinely benefit from it.
The unfounded bias you propagate may deter potential patients from ever experiencing the benefits of chiropractic care. Despite what you may believe, you do not have the authority or the credentials to disparage the effectiveness of chiropractic treatments. That's equivalent to a chiropractor giving a sermon on the nuances and risks of spinal surgery.
Given that you're a surgeon, it's disheartening that you fail to recognize your place in the therapeutic hierarchy, namely, as a last resort. It would be wise of you to respect the process that patients should exhaust all non-invasive options before resorting to the trauma of the operating table.

@@DonnallySpineConsult In most professional settings in north America today including psychiatry if you are not gender affirming you are breaking the law and now effectively sentencing someone to die. Just because a governing body has made certain changes doesn't always represent that is for the better of the people. There is no question that the y strap is an amazing tool and adjustment. Just watch 1000's of people get relief from it on Alex Tubio's and Joseph's channel. What I am about to say is anecdotal however, I had 8 years of severe back pain that never went away. I couldn't stand for more than 20-40 minutes without an increasing sensitivity that would progressively scale to the point at 2-3 hours of doing it I would be feeling ill and someone get to the point of throwing up. I couldn't sit for longer than about an hour without shooting pain and a building sensitivity as well. This issue by the way was mostly acute. It happen during a stunt. And slowly got worse over time. I am a stunt professional here in Vancouver and got treatment from over 40 professionals of all different kinds over the 8 years RMT, active release theory, chiropractic, thai massage, and about 4 other types of treatments none of which changed anything. I tried myself in disparity to do things with no beneficial effect. Finally found both those guys I mentioned online could get to them as they are in the US and so studied their methods and did it to myself with a friend. I used a car axel strap a piece Pvc pipe for a handle and a towel to soften the edges of the strap. I have it on video and that one strong decompression had an extremely sharp pain on the pull that was followed by the deepest relaxation I have felt in my life. Since that moment I have been pain free. 0 pain. The adjustment was done once and never again. So since then everyone that has known me and my situation has come to me asking me about it and I don't do this adjustment for anyone but my closest family and friends that all understand in the event of stroke or complication it was 100 on them but insisted I give them the same adjustment and so I did. 50 year olds 25 year old I have with only one adjustment helped over 20 people now. And it has made massive change in their lives. So I don't ask if it's affecting between my own anecdotal experiences and the 1000s of documented cases online is very clear it's highly effective. I just had to share with you this because I I had been in so much pain for so long that I was going to end my life and not because I was sad or depressed but because I didn't see an end to the pain and I just wanted peace. for almost a decade I tried to solve the issue. If people saw your message and this video and put off trying this adjustment it could be so harmful to the path. The risks and harm of this adjustment are so low and safe when done correctly that it would be a shame for people to not try it before going under the knife. I would look to take this video down and just reconsider the effects of could have brother. Really not an empowering video.
