  • The Gibraltar Custom Shop Makeover is a series where drummers send in pictures and video of their kit, and Brent chooses one to do a complete hardware makeover using Gibraltar. Brent shows different ways Gibraltar can be used to solve problems, achieve a desired look, and be efficient for each drummer. In this episode, Brent makes over a kit for drummer Nick D’Virgilio. Nick is using a 7 piece Ludwig kit consisting of; 2 rack toms, 2 floor toms, 1 bass drum, 1 main snare drum, and 1 auxiliary snare drum, with a mounted tambourine. His cymbal set up includes: 4 crash cymbals, 2 splash cymbals, 2 splash stackers, 1 ride cymbal, 2 chinas, and 1 hi hat. His band, Big Big Train, was touring Europe, and he needed a rack set up to help him not only simplify his set up and tear down, but to increase his stage presence and make his performance more visually impressive. See how Brent converted Nick’s stand set up into a two-tiered, double side rack based off the Stealth Rack.

    It's cool to see what Nick uses for his personal setup, cause ya know.... all the gear reviews.

      Michael Staszak Well actually, the companies sent them over to him. He doesnt really endorse anything much personally. He’s played Sabians in studio as well as Meinl, Tama, DW, and others. Companies basically use him as a billboard lol

      @@FanaticDrummer Nick was a Mapex, Meinl, Vic Firth and Aquarian endorser for a lot of his professional career but now doesn't endorse anything since he sells a lot of different stuff. He said in his Drum video that he now has the freedom to play whatever he wants and use different things for different projects (Pearl and Meinl for Snow Live, Ludwig and Sabian for Carl Verheyen, Ludwig Zildjian and Gibraltar for Big Big Train), but still has his preferences for his personal setup. In this video and the corresponding Sweetwater rig rundown he has this Mapex kit and in his Sweetwater home lesson video, he has a yellow DW kit on the same hardware setup, using a mix of Meinl and Zildjian. It's nice to see him change things up and use different things for different situations but also nice to see what's in his personal studio.

    I like the make over, super clean and organized. I’m looking to get my kit looking better with using a rack and a lot of stands as I don’t have the room in my drum room. I keep tripping over the cymbal stand legs getting in and out from behind my kit. I’m not a gigging drummer, so my kit stays home. I use my kit for making drum covers, jamming, and for practice. I’ll try to get a video and photos of my kit to see what you recommend. I’m not looking for anything crazy, just a simple set up.

    Looks awesome. But would be a huge pain to tear down and set up every night. I’ve had 2 racks and unless you’re a huge touring drummer and have room to basically leave your rack assembled it’s a huge pain to setup and tear down on your own and packing it up in a bag.

    • @sammyloehnis3373
      @sammyloehnis3373 Před 4 lety

      Isn't it possible to leave parts of it assembled? For instance, if you have a three sided setup, have you tried leaving the main frame and the side extensions separated from each other, but still with the clamps and stuff on? I've never had a rack so I'm just curious.

    • @vernonbowers4355
      @vernonbowers4355 Před 4 lety +2

      Sammy Loehnis yeah you can leave the clamps on but as far as packing up in a bag you’ll have to take the cymbal tube/extensions out of the clamps otherwise it won’t go in your bag/case unless you have one of the real big touting cases that are big enough to accommodate the room needed with cymbal arms still attached. Hope this helps 🤟🏼

    • @vernonbowers4355
      @vernonbowers4355 Před 4 lety +2

      Sammy Loehnis also have to remember which crossbars go into which clamps if they’re all memory locked. If you put the wrong leg into the wrong foot or vise versa, or the wrong crossbar you’re kit will definitely be thrown off. Racks are definitely not as simple as made seem to be for a average gigging drummer. If you have the huge cases and ways of traveling with it still assembled for the most part racks are awesome. Otherwise they’re a huge pain. I’ve tried about every setup you can think of and racks are definitely harder to manage without the right cases and travel means around it

    Nice clean look... Couple video suggestions; There is nothing wrong with a static shot, or a slight movement. With the faster moves it's harder to see all the rack details. Also, it might be cool to reveal the kit and then remove the drums from the shot. That way we see what you did, again with more detail. Nick rocks and so does this mounting system.

    I must echo what a few others have said. This might look kind of cool, but it definitely takes up a lot more hardware room and a lot more complicated to set up then using a more standard version of hardware using stands with tripod legs.. rocks are often heavier and more complicated to use then they are worth a lot of the time. But it does look cool.
