- The Gibraltar Custom Shop Makeover is a series where drummers send in pictures and video of their kit, and Brent chooses one to do a complete hardware makeover using Gibraltar. Brent shows different ways Gibraltar can be used to solve problems, achieve a desired look, and be efficient for each drummer. In this episode, Brent makes over a kit for drummer Nick D’Virgilio. Nick is using a 7 piece Ludwig kit consisting of; 2 rack toms, 2 floor toms, 1 bass drum, 1 main snare drum, and 1 auxiliary snare drum, with a mounted tambourine. His cymbal set up includes: 4 crash cymbals, 2 splash cymbals, 2 splash stackers, 1 ride cymbal, 2 chinas, and 1 hi hat. His band, Big Big Train, was touring Europe, and he needed a rack set up to help him not only simplify his set up and tear down, but to increase his stage presence and make his performance more visually impressive. See how Brent converted Nick’s stand set up into a two-tiered, double side rack based off the Stealth Rack.

It's cool to see what Nick uses for his personal setup, cause ya know.... all the gear reviews.
Michael Staszak Well actually, the companies sent them over to him. He doesnt really endorse anything much personally. He’s played Sabians in studio as well as Meinl, Tama, DW, and others. Companies basically use him as a billboard lol
@@FanaticDrummer Nick was a Mapex, Meinl, Vic Firth and Aquarian endorser for a lot of his professional career but now doesn't endorse anything since he sells a lot of different stuff. He said in his Drum video that he now has the freedom to play whatever he wants and use different things for different projects (Pearl and Meinl for Snow Live, Ludwig and Sabian for Carl Verheyen, Ludwig Zildjian and Gibraltar for Big Big Train), but still has his preferences for his personal setup. In this video and the corresponding Sweetwater rig rundown he has this Mapex kit and in his Sweetwater home lesson video, he has a yellow DW kit on the same hardware setup, using a mix of Meinl and Zildjian. It's nice to see him change things up and use different things for different situations but also nice to see what's in his personal studio.
I am in love with that rack configuration. Function and beauty.
I wonder how Nick likes his Porter and Davies monitor? I absolutely LOVE mine!! One of the best damn inventions for drummers in a long time.
I like the make over, super clean and organized. I’m looking to get my kit looking better with using a rack and a lot of stands as I don’t have the room in my drum room. I keep tripping over the cymbal stand legs getting in and out from behind my kit. I’m not a gigging drummer, so my kit stays home. I use my kit for making drum covers, jamming, and for practice. I’ll try to get a video and photos of my kit to see what you recommend. I’m not looking for anything crazy, just a simple set up.
Dang is that ever cool! I could sit down and play it just as is!
At first I thought Nick is going to show up in the video as a surprise lol.
Wish you still made these kinds of vids
Very nice, love what you do,please keep helping these people create there dream setups.Never was a rack man but got to say if I was still in the game caring all the heavy gear I used to it would probably be a different story. This stuff has come along way.!!!
That came out sweet.. I converted about a year ago with 2 stealth racks. Haven’t got exactly like I want it. But set does have a smaller footprint now
Cool system!
Yes!!! Iove these videos! Do more of these!!!
4:48 holy tongue twister (say ineededtogetalittlebitmoreheight ten times) lol nice rap skills Brent!
cant wait to see a video of a bunch of ideas for the new rack that goes over and around the bass drum.
I love these kinds of videos
Awesome!! I really love it!!
Looks awesome. But would be a huge pain to tear down and set up every night. I’ve had 2 racks and unless you’re a huge touring drummer and have room to basically leave your rack assembled it’s a huge pain to setup and tear down on your own and packing it up in a bag.
Isn't it possible to leave parts of it assembled? For instance, if you have a three sided setup, have you tried leaving the main frame and the side extensions separated from each other, but still with the clamps and stuff on? I've never had a rack so I'm just curious.
Sammy Loehnis yeah you can leave the clamps on but as far as packing up in a bag you’ll have to take the cymbal tube/extensions out of the clamps otherwise it won’t go in your bag/case unless you have one of the real big touting cases that are big enough to accommodate the room needed with cymbal arms still attached. Hope this helps 🤟🏼
Sammy Loehnis also have to remember which crossbars go into which clamps if they’re all memory locked. If you put the wrong leg into the wrong foot or vise versa, or the wrong crossbar you’re kit will definitely be thrown off. Racks are definitely not as simple as made seem to be for a average gigging drummer. If you have the huge cases and ways of traveling with it still assembled for the most part racks are awesome. Otherwise they’re a huge pain. I’ve tried about every setup you can think of and racks are definitely harder to manage without the right cases and travel means around it
Whilst you make some fine points you neglect to appreciate the clutter free design that a rack can give you!
Wow! Awesome set up.
Exceptional as always!!
yeeii the makeover is BAAACKKK!!!!!!
Nice
Hey Brent, I love the Gibraltar rack designing software you used for your design. Cool you can have multicolor plans. When is the app available in the app store? 😃
THT'S 🔥
awesome
I've already got a shaft extender. It's called "my wife"
Awesome

Nice clean look... Couple video suggestions; There is nothing wrong with a static shot, or a slight movement. With the faster moves it's harder to see all the rack details. Also, it might be cool to reveal the kit and then remove the drums from the shot. That way we see what you did, again with more detail. Nick rocks and so does this mounting system.
Videditor1067 thank you for the comments! We will definitely take this into consideration.
Nice looking Rack! I wonder how will it look with a similar setup but with double bass, I bet there are changes on the left side of the rack in order to fit the other bass drum, I will do something like that with my drums hopefully soon!
This may sound weird I would love you guys to do this to the new Vox Telstar drum 🥁 kit by adding more tom-toms and cymbals and a extra snare that would be cool 😎.
This is rack I would love to have 😁
Hmmm that looks expensive lol.. love the stealth rack idear though
Yes, its back
Sweet looking system. Anyone add up the parts list at the end of the vid? W/o looking it up, I'd imagine this rack probably ran about $2000 w/all the different clamps & arms.
“For Sure”!
I will be in touch!
Those racks are so much better.
The setup looks exactly like a modern verson of Phil Collins' early 70s setup
Jojo V. Jordet Definitely not a coincidence. His band Big Big Train sounds just like early Genesis.

I must echo what a few others have said. This might look kind of cool, but it definitely takes up a lot more hardware room and a lot more complicated to set up then using a more standard version of hardware using stands with tripod legs.. rocks are often heavier and more complicated to use then they are worth a lot of the time. But it does look cool.
I would love to have the money to get a rack.
Brandon Bishop Bought all my components on the used market. Full chrome stealth system for about $450. I can hold 16 cymbals and 3 toms if needed.
Any reason not to use the 6709NL? Im having a hard time finding stock on the SC-78ASE and then adding SC-LBBT. Thanks
Says Nick plays Ludwigs....but the drums in the video are Gretsch. So which is it? And what do his drums really look like?
Blake Gowan this kit was built ahead of time so I had to use my GRETSCH kit. Sweetwater did their own video that dropped today I believe. You can see Nick’s kit on the rack in action
What's the price tag on something like this? Yeah - I'm too lazy to look it all up and figure out for myself
Even though the kit isn't being played, any set on bare floor gives me anxiety.
It was good but you should play the drums in the video
Cost???
Snoogans!
How does it all sound???
It's a rack. I guess it would sound similar as hitting the cymbal stands you are using now? Like wood on metal...
This looks just as complicated to set up as traditional stands and doesnt look any better. Waste of money.

The idea would be to not take it all apart. Otherwise yes normal stands are just as good I doubt there is much cost difference either way though
maddrummerhef Exactly the cost is the same. I have a 3 part stealth system that folds down and fits in any vehicle. You can even put them on a cart if needed. Saves WAY more time than folding up stands and shifting them around nonstop
Nice I use two stealths myself and memory locks if I have to take it apart but I normally just load the racks into my truck out together
I agree. It’s easy for Nick to recommend the Gibralter system especially when it’s free.
....for me Nicks front toms look like 12 and 13.......
looks great, but just not practical for the average gigging drummer..
You guys really need to actually give away the makeover items to some regular guys. I’m sure you can afford it.
They have done this a ton in the past, you can submit your kit via the email
Thanks for the comment! These videos are for showing the possibilities Gibraltar offers. None of the set ups are given away. Please submit your drum kit for the possibility of a makeover!!
@@GibraltarHardware hi there
I need drum rack makeover for drum set
@@tylrbass Right, but no one actually gets gifted the rack. Brett just describes what they could do. It would be cool to see a few people actually win a free rack.
too much time to set all that shit up for a kit that size
Looks like too much work.
