In the modern world of airtravel, pilots still play an essential role in safely flying the plane. But when it comes to flying rockets, humans have always taken a back seat, since computers are capable of getting into orbit with much more accuracy. This video compares rocket pilots to airline pilots and looks at how SpaceX's Starship rocket will land on Mars all by iteslf.

5:22 "You can't", annnnnnndd I just did. On the first try.... My rocket pilots license plz
Same
I also did it at the first try... on 0:00
I was at 1:28 at my first try and then made it to 0:00 on my second try.
So where i collect my rocket license? Did it at the first try xD
Same hereeee!!!!! First try!!!!!!!!🔥🔥🔥🤔🤔🤔🤔😂😂🤝📸. Alright NASA. What's next?😁

me too, on the first try. I tried again after and it took 6 tries :))
2nd try and i paused exactly on 0:00, nice touch on the dancing elon
First try for me.
YOU CAN BOTH LAND ROCKETS THEN!!

Well, I enjoyed this Audible advert. It's a shame it was interrupted multiple times by brief and misleading sections about rocketry.
Why do you say he is misleading
@@natureportal9285 Well, myriad reason. For example: The landing of a falcon 9 booster is not dependent on GPS. And landing on Mars & other celestial bodies are always automated with the same technology. It's just not in any way the limitation or difficulty we're facing.
Edit: Then he's like "one solution of how to land on a planet we already landed on is to land on it first at least 3 times before landing on it". @6:40
@@MegaAlexPink I wouldn't say we "landed" on Mars... more like... crash landed with a giant balloon around us.
@@NetworKrakle nah u need to go do some research on how different landings have worked. Ur a good decade behind 😉
@@MegaAlexPink Bruh.
Falcon 9 uses a preprogrammed gps coordinate to land.
Did you do your research?
I have played enough KSP to, in fact, be able to pause the video at 0.00, and it only took me 7 quicksave reloads.
Nice maracas!
Facts
It took me 2 times with no .25 speed or frame by frame (, & .)
Only 1 try and then i try’d again but it just made me mad
I mean the computer does exacly that: runs thousands/millions of simulations every time the input changes/there is the time for it.
Hmm, you might want to reconsider after playing KSP.
edit: Primal changed the title so I make less sense now.
edit 2: I just noticed it was uploaded on 9/11, I guess that was why the title was changed?
Ksp proves his point
Yeah try timing a landing perfectly - without use of Mechjeb or the other one that tells you when to burn

Great video but the audible ad in the middle was quite jarring.
I was was thinking exactly the same thing! Great video. But Primal Space should tone down the sale pitch and shorten the time allotted to the audible plug. Other influencers do that and the end of their video and use a different angle. They focus on what they like about the product they are pushing. They don't just regurgitate the product manufacturer's sale pitch.
Other than that I like the videos. :)
Whole thing was just an ad
Good to know u don't just watch Tim xD
Dont judge him, he need money like everyone of us...
Just skip through it boomer
@4:55 It's not actually a textbook "suicide burn" but a hoverslam as SpaceX calls it. A suicide burn is full throttle at the lowest possible until touchdown while a hoverslam starts higher with lower throttle. This allows the Falcon 9 to vary its deceleration for a gentle and more precise landing.
I think it is still a suicideburn because the TWR is greater than 1
i think its more of a pr thing to call it a hoverslam than a suicide burn

600 hours, I could definitely pilot a rocket to the mun by now
This timer thing was a really good way of engaging your audience - not to mention making sure we remember the vid way longer than normally when just going around youtube watching random stuff.I felt a need to try and pause it at 0.00 - borderline physical pain until I freakin' went back and finally tried.

I would think landing three transponders for a Mars landing would be just as difficult as the actual landing. A better method might be for each ship to carry 3 or more cube SATs. Once a suitable location is determined, the cube SATs detach and are placed in a geosynchronous orbit orbit near the entry window, allowing for a limited GPS system. Then, as launches start to accumulate, you would simultaneously build up a GPS system.
5:27 OMG I ACTUALLY PAUSED IT AT 0.00

I’m a computer now

As an Airline pilot I can point two good reasons why it'd be hard to guide a rocket:
1- Humans need references to guide a vehicle, since at space or earth orbit references are distant and hard to track(Eye-ball) actually piloting is really hard. Take docking now, references are close and rotation/acceleration/speed is easier to "feel".
2- Since there are lots lots and lots of calculations going on. We get the role of Go-Nogo decisions. If we were to focus on navigation and booster/thrusters only we would miss the big picture. Take Apollo 12 for example, it was troubleshooting right from the start.
And yes, we would waste tons of fuel to manually guide the rocket.
As always superb quality. Thank you for this one. When do I get the next chance to get a SaturnV?
A radar and/or lidar altimeter will certainly be part of the Mars solution re the hoverslam. And a hi-res radar mapping of the general landing site can be done at computer-speed while descending to determine the precise site. A bunch of engineering undergrads could program that.
But I have yet to read a definitive answer on whether F9 augments GPS with radar. Just seems so logical, especially for droneship landings where deck is moving vertically at a varying rate. Have seen repeated claims that hyper-precise GPS is all that is needed.
They do use radar, but it would not work on mars. Radar can be used to do some large scale ground mapping, like the probe which used it to penetrate venus' clouds to map its surface, but that level of detail we already know about mars from the MRO mission still in orbit. What spacex uses radar for is for precise location and ranging of their pads during landing and this is only possible because the paint they use for the big white X is specifically designed to reflect radar. There is no such painted pad on mars though (yet). My guess is it will still have a ground radar to double check the mapping data from the MRO, but will use a mix of computer vision and LiDAR for the final approach.
@@maxk4324 Thanks for the info about radar paint at SpaceX pads. LiDAR it is, then. Unless they send ahead a probe to throw paint-filled balloons. :)

Too many ads for such a short video.
Title: "Why humans suck at flying rockets."
Leo from the Little Einsteins: "Am I a joke to you?"
5:00 incorrect. Rocket engines are capable of throttling there thrust. The real reason firing too soon is bad is you run out of fuel before you land, thus causing you to crash
Yeah but there are limits to thrust control, imagine trying to switch gears mid-fall.
kakytoo69
Even with throttling, a single Merlin engine produces *more* thrust than the booster stage weight. It has to come in decelerating -all the way,- and shut off precisely on time.
@@avid0g true enough, but you also have to factor in that an engine still produces thrust even after its shut off. Its a balancing act
@@kakytoo69
Yes. It also helps to have dampers in the landing legs to accommodate the error band.
Falcon-1 Mk-3 rear-ended the second stage, after stage separation, because of residual thrust after MECO.
Real life is not KSP. Rocket engines can only be throttled so much. 1 Merlin engine at minimum thrust gives the Falcon 9 booster while landing a thruster weight ratio of more than one.
I had a hard time determining if this video was for real or just clickbait infomercial for audiobooks. I’ll stay subscribed for now but if the clever commercial segways continue I’m outta here.
He's gotta make a living somehow. This was not a very intrusive ad as compared to other places on CZcams, I think we can spare the tiny amount of patience for an ad to allow him to keep making the good content we want to see.
How about a real career with CZcams just as a hobby. It’s much more fun when your channel is not monetized. CZcams is flooded with channels vying for our financial loyalty and this market is saturated. What the hell, it’s certainly ok to make an attempt.
@@DeathValleyDazed Not everyone wants it to just be a hobby, and high quality video take a long time to plan, record, and edit so having it as a side gig isn't always viable for some people. Also a lot of people don't want to spend the majority of their time doing something they don't like just to get the chance to spend a small amount of time doing something they do like. Many want to make a career out of what they love to do, and having a minute or so of advertising in a (on average) ten minute video isn't a huge price to pay. What you are basically asking is for career CZcamsrs to give up their current jobs for something they'd like to do less and dramatically increase the complexity of their lives just to spare us a very minor annoyance. It's not exactly a fair thing to ask. Like what harm did watching him talk about audible cause you?
@@DeathValleyDazed Also, being a CZcamsr is s "real career", as you put it.
@@maxk4324 Max, I really get what you're saying in support of Primal Space. My opinion on this matter is just that, another opinion and for that reason not really worth much. It sounds like you personally know "Primal Space" and that he, in fact, CZcamss for his life work, passion, income, and personal fulfillment? Some CZcamsrs stumble onto monetization by luck and accident because their hobby channel became so popular they basically had to go full time just to keep up with the energy and attention. Tim Dodd, Every Day Astronaut might fit this description. Besides CZcams rocket and science stuff, I listen to ESPN radio and as irritated with their constant segway and plugging products in clever ways. The content is so saturated with commercials that it's approaching the 40-50 percent of listener time. I'm not anti-commercials because they have to generate income but it's close to reaching the infomercial level. Primal Space has excellent content and I wish his channel nothing but more success. Thanks for taking the time to comment and add some juice to this comment section.
I didn't know this was a question that needed answering, but I'm glad I clicked.
I didn’t even know that’s an ad … smooth af damn Impressive
OMG no jocking I got 0.00 first time.

"Since the rocket has a thrust to weight ratio greater than one, it has to perform a suicide burn"
lol what? Excuse me? If it had a TWR less than one it would smash into the ground.
That's like saying "because john has a heartbeat, he must go to work today." What an insane non sequitur.
It must perform a "suicide burn" to land in the most efficient way possible, because it only has some much fuel left.
Me in KSP: Whatever you say. I'ma head out for Duna on a lawn chair.
Your videos are full of knowledge
"...another thing that's exciting is the incredible range of audiobooks...." lol ffs. Also, do you really have to do that mid-video as well as the end? Stop it. The way you're going about the advertising is cringy, annoying, and for that I'm definitely not subscribing.
Unsubscribing. I don't watch your videos to be reminded that Audible exists every 30 seconds.
That ad and normal video transition was smooth as silk
I'm fine with the impossible number of people who stopped it @ 0.00 "first try".. But ALL these people complaining about ads must think they "deserve" free content. So even if you make something people like, they blame you for trying to sustain making that thing for them. Can't win.. I Love the channel. Thank you Primal Space Team!
Annoying ads! That video deserved a thumbs up but you get a down just for the ads.
all I heard was "audible audible blah blah"
Thank you for the applause, little period man.
got to admit the integrated ad is so much better than commercial interruptions
I thought they modulated the flow of fuel to make the Falcon 9 land. If I understand the explanation in this video, the engine runs with constant power and they just play on the timing. If it is correct, then they have achieved a remarkable feat!
You cant have an engine run at whatever throttle you want it to run at lmfao. Rocket engines just dont work that way.
Even if engines were designed like that, their not gonna be consistent in any way, shape, or form.
I just paused it exactly at 0.00. It was at 1.5 speed, too, and It was on my first try. What is that guy holding something like a maraca?

Video was very nice but i had problems with sound. It was very low. I wish it was more audible which is very cool amazon company, there are lots of discount nowadays.
Could you make a movie summing up what NASA is currently doing and planning to do? Also do the same with SpaceX in a different movie?
Nice video
It's interesting watching this today, knowing that the Perseverence rover will be landing on Mars next year by the "compare pictures of the ground with this map" method, to make sure it's landing accurately and in a safe area, and that SpaceX will probably be watching that landing for data it will use for Starship
We already use it on our cruise missiles.
New tomahawks take in terrain data from all the sensors onboard, reference it against its built in maps, and then get its position from that.
NLAWs also dont even use any actual guidance anymore. They just remember the position and velocity of a tank, and then just guess where its gonna be from that data.
In general, militaries are trying their best to move away from GPS, just because we all know that shitholes like Russia and CCP China gonna start blowing up sattelites the moment their regime has any tantrums.
Commercial planes in the 60s be like: put an engine on that blob of sheet metal over there
I like how every video of his is supported not sponsored
5:26 as someone who plays KSP, and hit 0 on 2nd try, I think a better comparison would comparison would be you have to hit 0 on the timer but theres 20-40 seconds of delay and you don't know exactly what it is unless you can pull off some sick mental algebra in the next 5 seconds but then you have to do the same thing for both lateral axes but then remind yourself that when you rotate to account for lateral motion you now have fucked your vertical calculations.
Hey primal space, so uh not gonna lie but the thing you said in 5:27, i got it perfectly on 0.00 on my first try lol also the youtube timer bugged out when it shows 0.00 on screen and it also shows 0:00. I have screenshots for proof
You get a like for that good ass integrated transition to an ad
5:24 Lol, you said you can't and a lot of us did, on our first try.

The audible AD had all my attention
I'm not joking when I say that I paused it a zero by accident and it is now my biggest achievement in life.
I love how you talk about the falcon heavy and then show boosters landing but they're boosters from space x lol
Now that's how to do an embedded advert, I honestly can't wait until we start sending humans to Mars.
The autopilot deflating never get's old.

The multitude of annoying audible ads killed it for me. Giving no thumbs was the best I could do.
