  • In this weeks episode of the Wide Awake Podcast I spoke to a homeless soldier called Gavin about a tragic event that happened while he was in Rwanda. This event lead to him spending many years in some of South Africa's most notorious prisons. We also talked about the events that lead to him living on the streets, his struggle with addiction, how he got shot during a fight with a gang member and much more...

He said one one or two things that do not add up , he was deployed to Rwanda and shot 2 kids after SWAPO attacked a village ,SWAPO is from Namibia, the 32 battalion was deployed to Namibia and Angola but never heard of it going to Rwanda ( and SWAPO is Namibian)

Be careful believing everything your hear about us South Africans. This chap, for sure as hell, is committing acts of stolen valour. Crackpot believing his own stories. Not even Japanese that he spoke. 32Bn was never in Rwanda. And he never served in 32 Bn. 100% BS.

Hey, thanks for the comments! With this kind of an episode I usually take things with a pinch of salt! I think it’s important to talk to people from all backgrounds and hear their stories but obviously with someone like Gavin it’s always hard to know what is true and what isn’t! With most of my guests their stories are known but someone living on the streets with an addiction problem might say things that are incorrect or not true! I want to start talking to people I meet randomly because I think it’s interesting. I’m not sure if you’ve ever seen the channel soft white underbelly. He talks to people living on the streets and addicts. He mainly focuses on people living in Skid Row in LA! Their stories aren’t always accurate but I think it’s still very interesting to hear from them! 🙏🏼

It sounds like he's thrown together a few different languages - for example, (and I may be incorrect, but this is just what I hear + what words I could pick out from the languages I know a little bit of)... He says "Wǒ" which, in Mandarin, is "I". I also hear "Xiǎoqì" (possibly also Mandarin), and then he chucks in a "khon tai" which means Thai person in Thai. Not sure what his aim was tbh 😂
