I think this largely has to do with James Gunn saying they're going to reboot the DCEU, so because these last few films are going to lead to nothing people just aren't going. By saying that the last few movies didn't do well so they're scrapping the whole thing, they've kind of created a self-fulfilling prophecy so that the rest of the movies that are still left will absolutely do terribly as well.
Nah I think it because of Dwayne Johnson he didn't wanted to be in Shazam
â@@zetamangads lol. You being a shrill for WBD brought into PR deflection. Typical Gunn cultist. Lol
You guys are 25 and under and got no money to support DC. You just like to talk crap on social media about how true DC fans you are sitting at home. đđđđ
Has nothing to do with with its place in the DCEU or if Black Adam wants to be in it. If the movie was good the sentiment would have been "wooo James Gunn and Dwayn Johnson really missed a golden opportunity by letting this through their fingers."
Once again joes DC videos just turn into him being salty about Superman. No matter what hero he talks about it always ends up being about Superman
@@LizardSpork most people arenât tuned into what the people in charge are saying. Itâs a very small group of people who pay attention.
Endgame was the perfect place for me to get off the super hero train.
closed the door on super hero movies as well then ....
locked that door even, when they mistreated Henry the way they did.
slammed some nails into the door to make it even more closed off, when they did nothing about Ezra and that Amber.
You'll be back when Avengers 5 comes out. Heck, as early as Deadpool 3. LOL!
@toshtao1 lol new avengers sucks no one cares about 90% of them
Nah, there's been some quality stuff since then.
The Boys, No Way Home, The Batman, and The Suicide Squad come to mind.
@@viviennewestwoodruinedmylife Spider-Man, Daredevil, Deadpool, Doctor Strange, and Moon Knight suck? Hugh Jackman's Wolverine? Wanda? (If she's alive).
They set up Shazam vs. Black Adam in the first film. The Wizard said thousands of years ago, the council gave the power to someone unworthy and it led to the seven deadly sins getting released and almost destroyed the world.
And Mr. Mind.
He is Shazam's most iconic adversary like the Joker to Batman.
In the movie, Black Adam got the power from his kid, not the council
I think Shazam 2's failure has to do with a few factors:
- Yes, the reboot announcement basicaly told us that we didn't need to see any of these leftover movies;
- Yes, it's possible that Dwayne Johnson and WB pulled some strings to not have cameos but was a mid-credit scene gonna really make or break an arguably just OK film?
- The fact that this movie changed it's release schedule was almost certainly because WB didn't quite have much faith in this project;
- The other major issue is that Shazam being a carbon copy of Superman was very limited in what they could do with his character, if even in recent DC animated movies he was sorta of a secondary character, the live action wouldn't have much material anyway since most of the character's history was limited to the old Fawcett comics canon;
- Shazam has to my knowledge, at least, three major antagonists that they could use in a live action film: Black Adam, Dr. Sivana and Mister Mind;
- The fact that Shazam 2 had to resort to creating original villains tells me that they didn't have much source material to work with, hence why it all felt very underwhelming;
- That's why I think Shazam was always gonna have a hard time in movies because he doesn't have much beyond his origin story, which is pretty unique compared to the other superheroes;
- I appreciated that Shazam 2 at least tried to build his world a little more but at this point, Shazam just doesn't have much beyond his appeal;
If the Black Adam movie taught me one thing about The Rock, it's that he never cared about brining the character to life, just dressing as him. đ
That he'd rather star in something bad than be interesting in something good.
Very true. The Rock is an asshole for this one.
He also basically plays himself in every character he is.
The more I see of the rock the more I respect Cena
They miscasted him as Black Adam. I thought The Rock was too stiff and comedic unlike BA in the comic who was stoic but had an unbridled rage within him. The Rock shouldn't have tried to make BA into a hero and embrace the role of an anti-hero more.
I agree with you, Joe. Shazam and Superman vs. Black Adam would've been a phenomenal story to tell! Just seems like these Hollywood folks don't really know what the hell they're doing, unfortunately.
When you hire ego maniacal roided aholes who believe they sht out gold, that's what you can expect.
They know what they are doing. They want to hire their nephews and nieces who wanna be writers.
Dwayne decided to get involved and put himself before everything. By everything i mean before the franchise, good ideas, and the audience.
Then of course black Adam has this garbage villain and garbage plot. Like jeesh why not at least deliver this insane movie so maybe the ppl could get behind it.
Most of that falls on the Rock.
Superman would destroy black adam in 3 seconds, Why would he need Shazam
DC needs to get the people making the Cartoon Movies to do the Live Action movies as they actually know how to make it good.
it's insane how easily they could have introduced black Adam here, or even make this a direct sequel to black adam with the three way battle from the animated film happens.
So here's the thing. It isn't FRANCHISE fatigue. Scream 6, John Wick 4 both did very well. Scream 6 even did well CRITICALLY.
Mission Impossible is another franchise that gets better and better with each film. If these large companies just you know, made good movies people would go out and support them. No Way Home and Batman 22 prove that if nothing else, it isn't superhero fatigue either. Maybe stop blaming the audience and start hiring more competent writers.
franchise fatigue doesn't exist.
@@boarfaceswinejaw4516 but super hero fatigue does. Iâve lost interest for years now.

agree, if you bring a good story, the installed fan audience will always show up
3 Day estimated down 68% is brutal, that means a huge % of the money was made in PLF and once John Wick took over those screens there was incredibly tepid interest. If a money can't translate to normal screens it will have zero legs.
The brutal part is that OW was already pathetic.
Jon Wick is killing them for sure

Because it looked like complete garbage?
It was full of cgi & action that just felt hollow for me. I never saw the movie, & I'll just stick with the first one.đ
Probably choppy graphics and loose plot. WW already said the gods were dead, but then Ares shows up. Now the daughters of Titan. So are the gods dead or not? It was bizzare, but there was no back story leading up to this UNLESS you were a comic book fan. So I am so sad to see this film do poorly, I genuinely liked it. However I could fill in all the context because I read the books. So of course general movie goers would be confused.
Cuz they spoiled the entire plot from the trailer alone
â@@valkaek I wasn't confused. The movie just wasn't that good or entertaining outside of a few jokes đ
I think itâs too late to restart the DCEU. I donât think people care much about superhero films anymore. I think the hype is dying. Fast.
Look at the numbers the Marvel movies are pulling, the hype is DEAD.
We'll see when superman comes out. If that bombs, then WB should pull the plug. A good superman movie will get about 600-700 mil max.
I don't know if you really read your comments but I'll teach you something about why they keep changing actors out, the more the same actors are used the more expensive they become with future movies by hiring someone younger they can save money because newer younger actors are cheaper to use it all comes down to Greed with these CEOs I don't know if you already knew this but that's what happens

Agreed. A lot cheaper to make, looks infinitely better because there is no uncanny valley effect caused by putting people in sub-par CG scenes. I'd pay to see a fully animated DC movie. Frankly all the 2D animated stuff they've done digtially in recent years I found FAR better than any of the live action movies.

Because Warner Bros let James Gunn pull the plug on the DCEU, so idk what yaâll were expecting.
Exactly, why would people care about DCEU world building with Aquaman the lost kingdom as well if James Gunn wanted to reboot the whole thing?
100 fact. Everyone saw it coming. Even AngryJoe call it on rant on Cavill firing.
Wanna hear a fact, Most people don't even know DC is being rebooted
@@MemeCommand Most people don't care.
Itâs got nothing to do with that. Itâs just a bad film as a lot of the previous films have been, dc films that ainât Batman are not gonna pull crowds
Feel it is a mix of both James Gunn announcing the reboot but also the villains just don't feel like they are main movie villain material. Honestly would love to see them do something similar to how they did there Animated Films years ago, they would have a small 10 15 minute short film of a lesser known hero before the main feature. That could help the film line as it allows them to gauge audience reactions to these lower tier characters without risking a feature film but also give some newer writer's, actor's and director's a shot again without risking a full feature film. You could do a lot of experimental stuff and unleash a lot of creativity.
We Just can hope for now
Also, feels like Helen Mirren is in everything these days.
Giving less and less effort; understandably given her age.
Reboot probably affected box office but I it's only part of the problem. Shazam 2 is not first dceu movie to fail and lose money, it's literally 5th failure in a row. The truth is after few disappointing movies, average viewers started to associate DCEU with bad movies and lost interest in watching it (it's like big budget arrowverse). Some people probably think you need to watch previous movies to have better experience from the new ones (just like in MCU) but they don't want to wach those disappointing older DCEU movies. Batman & Joker only proved there's still audience for DC, just not for DCEU so I'm not surprised someone decided to end this and start from the start.
Ezra Miller's reputation might weigh down the Flash's performance.
Good.
i don't know if general audiences are all that aware of the situation. the only reason any of my friends know about it is because i told them lol
As someone who's generally aware of a lot of pop culture and new things that come out and things that happen in the video game and movie spaces, I didn't even know this movie existed until after it released. That must say something about why it's performing as it is. I don't think anyone in the general public even knew or knows this movie exists other than people that actively follow movies or specifically DC stuff.
The Flash is only going to do better because of Batman, specially Michael. Without Batman, The Flash would be dead in the water.
Given the lead starâs recent like legal troubles oh yeah. Iâm even only seeing that because of Keaton and cause of Supergirl as sheâs my favorite DC hero next to Batgirl.
You can say that about DC in general.
@@Goleon It's not just down to Ezra Miller's legal troubles. The Flash has been in muddy waters since the film was announced, dating back to when Geoff Johns became DC Studios president back in 2016. Lots of director came and went, script rewrites. Let's not forget, the Flash was supposed to come out in 2019.
Considering its also the DCEU reboot, tge Flash movie has a lot riding on it. I speculate that, IF it does, Marvel may actually consider rebooting the MCU for the X-men focus
@@timetochronicle Marvel isn't rebooting anytime soon
Makes me kinda sad because I really liked the first movie and I love Zachary Levi. But when they showed the first trailer for this movie I was thinking it was gonna be bad as well. I've seen a bunch of people I follow say it's good though so I'll still watch it at some point. Maybe I'll find it good.
Did you saw it?
Nothing to do with being bad..
It was good. It stuck with the adopted kids still dealing with superpowers in an tropey & somewhat immature way. Freddy gets ALOT of focus & Jack Grazer plays him like Screech from SBTB but with moxy! A satisfying ending for the Shazam series for me (but a post credit scene i didnt need to see)
I wouldnât make it a priority.
It was garbage.
My thought process is that as long as people enjoy the film, that's all that really matters in the end.
As for future DC films, I'm looking forward to Blue Beetle the most. It could be something new and creative. Looking forward to finding out more soon :)

â@Padlock Steve But Shazam has been a part of the dceu. Even though you don't see his face superman is a part of that universe. Wonder woman also appears
Even when I saw the trailers I felt this movie wasn't gonna succeed very well. It's just an unnecessary sequel honestly, & I still love the first one.đ
I'm gonna say this. With the way Shazam 2 bomb they might as well release Batgirl. It can't be this bad.
Remember justice league snyder cut , why not just make more movies like that
I like Helen Mirren but I would like to hear that meeting where they thought hiring a woman at that age would make a great villain. Im just trying to figure out that thought processđ€
Seems like such a miscasting.
That meeting never happened. I guarantee you it went like this instead.
"So Freddy falls in love, but nobody's gonna know she's a villain."
"Isn't it gonna be kind of obvious?"
"Nah. Cause she's gonna look young and her sister's gonna look old."
Yeah but she's a gilf.
If she uses cunning, dirty tricks and cats paws she could be. You know, everything that makes spinster aunts scary IRL. But play to her strengths.
The writers made them look dumb. A movies rises or falls on the story.
What a surprise (not). I am not sure even James Gunn will save DCEU. It is doomed.

Once Gunn was announced as The new Boss , i felt that there's no point watching Shazam, Flash or anything that isn't part of Gunn's new universe, I'll watch it when it comes out on the internet, but it isn't worth my money now.
For reference, Fant4stic had a 68% decrease from its first week.
Wow, it dropped harder than Fant-Four-Stick? Didn't think that was possible
Probably a few reasons why:
1. Reboot incoming - Theyâve already announced a new universe coming in 2025. If this character isnât confirmed to be apart of it, why should audiences care?
2. WOM - I thought the movie was just ok. Not awful, but not great either. Even told my dad just to go on a $5 Tuesday or he could just use my theater subscription to see it effectively for free. So poor word of mouth from those less kind to it than me. Bad word of mouth = also harming the box office.
3. HBO Max - Audiences are now expecting that a movie will just be on streaming within 1-3 months or so after it hits theaters. Which is now happening to the new Shazam, itâs expected to be on HBO Max by late April/early May. If a movie isnât determined by the audience to be worth seeing in the theaters, theyâll just wait for it to hit streaming.
4. Economy - The economy is in a weird place right now. Sure, we donât have absolute masses of people losing their money, jobs, houses, etc. like in 2008, but inflation just makes even buying groceries tough. If you canât afford those as well these days, might as well save yourself the nearly $20+ (in my market) ticket price and use it to get some groceries or to pay for rent. A movie is a movie, but you gotta pay for the necessities.
5. General movie quality - Both Marvel and DC have been putting out stinkers lately, especially post-pandemic. If audiences are just sour on superhero movies in general, even a movie that could be great will suffer in the box office.
Super Hero movies died with Endgame
Spiderman did great
Superhero universes died with Endgame.
Individual movies can hit, but the concept of forcing people to care about all of them is over.
6:52, clearly where joe wanted to end the video lol
Joe where is the Superman and Lois season 3 review? Itâs pretty good!
Man we're better off dealing with King Tut's curse than the DC curse.
I didn't even know the movie was coming, and it seems others didn't too.
Shazam 2 would have made more money at the box office if it went with the boxing match you describe between the Rock and Henry Cavill. But it would have also ballooned the budget of the film even more than it already was. Also do you (Joe) think DC will learn from their mistakes and bring down the budgets for future projects going forward? And how could that decision effect Gunn's take for Superman Legacy? Thanks for reading my questions.
I mean WB announcing the home release in 4 weeks didnât help
I always got the sense DC was going for the tax write off on this one. The first Shazam was okay but I never got a sense that I should do anything besides wait for this one to appear on a streaming service
DC is dropping the ball big timeâŠ
A movie featuring Superman's gray son will bring WB back from the brink (Note: Guess starring gray Robin and gray Aqualad)

That's a shame. I thought the movie was silly but fun. The one problem I had with it was that, in the first one, Billy was a 12 year old who suddenly becomes this grown man superhero. In this one, he's 17, so it's not that big of a leap. However, the way Zachary Levi plays him, it's like Billy loses 20 IQ points and about 5 years of maturity every time he yells SHAZAM!.

They can thank WB, James Gunn and Zackary levi for this
The story not being interesting enough, Dwayne, and John Wick Chapter 4.
Joe kind of nailed it on the head. This is the first DECU movie to come out after the big announcement of the whole franchise reboot. It not only rendered this movie point-less but it kind of puts Shazam 2 in an impossible task of having an incredibly good stand-alone story.
Even without the big announcement, it wouldn't have done well anyway.
general audiences don't follow or care about crap like that
Kind of expected when you build up your whole franchise as being this interconnected bigger story and then decide to reboot parts of it. If the focus was on delivering individual stories in the first place I dont think we would see this problem.
I mean a lot of ppl thought ahead that this will not be a part of the new DCU. Iâm not surprised
Part of the problem was the dilution of the narrative focus--there were just two many characters. To some extent Levi felt like he was making a cameo in his own film!
The reasin for that is, Zach doesn't fit the narrative profile cause he's a straight white male. So they need a gay/lez, poc, trans and woman. That is the only reason to have so many characters in these SHAZAM movies. Sucks hollywood writers have no talent anymore.

@DreSaidSo those yea lol, tbose will always get the views
@DreSaidSo tbf those are like the most well known and most beloved superheroes of all time lol
I had no idea this movie was even coming out. I saw 0 trailers and ads for it.
I saw that first trailer and thought it had the writing of a 10 seconds tic tok
It's a real shame because I really enjoyed rhe movie, I'm hoping that once James Gunn gets the DCU up and running, we'll see major box office success
Agree, but I get the feeling it's gonna be long time until then
@@dylanmalone14 Just a few years
I liked the first one. I havenât seen any advertisement of the second one till yesterday so i think part of the problem was a lack of advertisement. I legit didnât know it even came out. I knew they were making it from the teaser a while ago but that was the last thing I heard about it.
Iâm just not into superhero movies anymore, which is a shame because I loved comics as a kid. Iâll only go to the ones with real grit and adult themes like Deadpool or the Dark Knight trilogy. Horror/Thrillers are where I see the most creativity from indie filmmakers these days, and weâre eating good in that genre.
Apparently, Keanu had previously spoken to James Gunn regarding Constantine 2. If made it would likely be a part of the new DC Elseworlds offering (eg. The Batman: Part II and Joker: Folie a Deux), existing in a continuity outside of the new DCEU.
Pray that Constantine 2 doesn't get axed after the Batgirl fiasco and the box office disappointment of Shazam sequel.
Man of steel being dark wasn't solely just Zacks idea it was WBs. They hired Zack because they wanted his dark gritty style for the dceu and thats what he gave them. Now they want imature/inappropriate and stylish dcu and that's why they have hired Gunn
They hired Gunn because Marvel fired him and because he makes better films
@@mrrobluxo2369 yeah he makes fun campy immature films with dark humour There is nothing wrong with that I'm just saying WBs narrative back then was darker is better because of the success of dark knight. Zack Snyder seemed to them at the time the best suited for what they wanted which was a dark gritty alternative to Marvel but that blew up in there faces. I'm expecting the dcu to now have the same feel as Peace maker and the suicide squad. Will it work who knows but we will see. I actually think DC should give up on the whole cinematic universe crap because it's not working for them.
@@STOPTHECLOWNS581 ainât no way youâre calling his film immature bruh đ
@@mrrobluxo2369 I'm sorry if you like his films but they are pretty immature crap telling dick jokes and dropping f bombs when ever possible is not mature writing. I don't like ether director Gunn or Snyder they are some of the most overrated directors of all time and WB put Gunn as the lead of DC đ it's history repeating itself once again WB put a overrated director in-charge of their whole dc universe.
@@mrrobluxo2369he means stupid and garbage
I'm looking forward to seeing what James Gun has in store for the DCU.
I think flash is gonna do half of black Adams numbers at best
No it won't
I agree that whether or not Superman was in it that much, a Shazam!/Black Adam movie would've been fun to watch.
Theres also like zero marketing done where I am (Philippines). Theres no youtube ads, nothing on TV, even at the cinemas theres only a small poster promoting it. I really liked Shazam 1 and was kinda looking forward to seeing the second one, but I didnt even realise it was out until I saw the "box office bomb" vids pop up on my feed.
Heck, there wasn't much marketing here in the U.S. either that I can tell. I live in the southeast U.S. and knew nothing about this movie coming out.
Not surprising tbh
Didn't even know they are making a Blue Beetle Movie.
What's Rodolfo ulous is that the studios are first concerned with making a movie and having a good story maybe second or third. What they should be doing is looking for a story that can be marketed better. I really think that's hard and the super hero burnout has run these movies (and shows) into the ground and the numbers you are citing to is the highest they're going to get if they are lucky.
As glad as I am to see the back of the Snyderverse (and I believe that any price creatively is worth paying in order to get away from the pure carnage those films have created) I do have sympathy for the creators that work on projects that have been left out to dry. WB and DC clearly want to move on, can't blame them, but because there have been projects in development they have kinda just been left to try and recoup costs it seems, kinda a damage limitation scenario.
It's also a shame to see characters and/or actors be left in the dust where they could have been good with better material but that's always a risk with any project. More a shame that it would take such a long time to see better versions of certain characters but I'd rather wait for a good version than suffer through awful versions so its difficult to get everything right at this moment.
