  • A final wrap of my reaction to the results of the U.K. General Election, held on the 4th July 2024.
    Probably my last video mentioning politics for some time. Summer is the time for riding bikes (oh, and listening to records). Today was a beautiful day!

    I liked this David: great to get an overview and synopsis of the current political state in another country. Appreciate you putting this out there, and what a beautiful bikeride! 😎

      Cheers for the comment. I occasionally make these videos as both a memory-jogger (for later, obviously) and after thinking about such a topic as a 'line in the sand'. They're not intended to appeal to, or grow, an audience, but because I don't do any other social media these videos are a means to share with friends or point people to them is they're curious about what I think about a current issue. I guess they're also useful in helping me gauge what other normal people think and whether I'm going nuts or getting too conspiratorial. Sometimes I think I am going nuts, but then I talk to some friends and am astounded by how trusting and incurious they very often are.

      @davidatkinson-lifematters4826 I'm the same as you with regard to social media: I only contribute to the VC via my videos. It's important to not only have a healthy dialogue but also listen to another's viewpoint respectfully. These conversations matter. I mean, here in the United States, we currently have nothing exciting or dramatic happening on the political stage: it's pretty quiet (insert a healthy dose of sarcasm here!).

    Sir David. A great ride - a great rant.....taking some of your needed breath away!! Ha Ha! How many KMs is your average ride? Do you ride with buddies sometimes? Love your English countryside. Here in Canada, there is going to be seismic shifts (my prediction) in local, Provincial, and Federal elections coming this fall. The pendulum swings! PS. David, could you show us some of or the bike you ride. Thanks again for the variety of Vids. Very enjoyable.

      Hi Pat, Cheers for your comment. I'm riding my Specialized Creo ebike, which I reviewed on CZcams and the link is here: czcams.com/video/PbIzfa0xHP0/video.htmlsi=t5YpH3AOUoEqX3L3 I normally riding between 20 and 50 miles, depending on the weather and whether I'm riding solo or in a group. The group I normally ride with are so fast I can barely speak. This eBike is twice the weight of my regular bike, so I'm always off the back on the flat, and only manage to get some recovery time when my mates are strip the hills. At least then I get some assistance. I'm not as strong as I used to be (obviously) so my regular bike (Specialized Tarmac SL6) only comes out when my fitness is good and the weather is super-nice. 😁

      BTW, I will be keeping an eye on elections in Canada, and although I try and be non-partisan, and judge politicians less on their rhetoric and more on their actual behaviour and, consequently, I will love to see that authoritarian prick that's in charge be voted out and then out on his arse!

    Thanks for this, David, it isn't really democracy in the UK, when you consider Reform got 4 miilion votes and just 4 seats, while Libdems got 3.5 million votes and obtained 71 seats,, This is just unfair (And I didn't vote fpr either of these two parties)

    • @davidatkinson-lifematters4826
      @davidatkinson-lifematters4826  Před měsícem +1

      I agree, it's unfair, even though that's the way the cookie has crumbled this time. I prefer PR, as I want every party (and the voters they represent) to have a voice in the policy conversation, rather than simply being ignored for five years at a time.

    Back in 2019 when Johnson led the tories to a huge win I thought there was no way Labour would win this time. I found the whole campaign very dull this time. There is nothing like the feeling of optimism that came with Blair’s win in 1997. Despite this I think Starmer has come across fairly well since his victory.

    • @davidatkinson-lifematters4826
      @davidatkinson-lifematters4826  Před měsícem

      I agree the whole campaign was dull, although we kind of expected that. I'm reserving judgement on how well Starmer and his crew are doing so far. Too early for me. I'm thinking the first time to judge is in the autumn, after the party conferences, and the media reaction to them. In the meantime, I'm hoping for a quiet summer.

    "Their sometimes woke agenda"...I would argue it isn't sometimes but all the time. Take Canada as a worst case scenario. I can't stand it. Lovely views of the countryside David!

      @davidatkinson-lifematters4826  Před měsícem

      Hi Mike, I don't think it's 100% woke. I once was on a panel with the new Defence Minister at a CBI business conference. He was thoughtful, smart, and respectful. I've followed his career ever since, and I don't imagine he buys into all the woke stuff at all. However, even if I'm right, he's massively outnumbered by his colleagues who probably see Canada as representative of 'good government'. Lord help us!
      Anyway buddy, it's Friday....Cheers! 😉

    Interesting again. I actually dont particulaly think either method of counting the winner matters much....voters have learnt how to use the system, I know lots of labour supporters who tactically voted lib dem..Ive heard Tories moaning about it...but interestingly didnt moan about it when they won . Im actually a big fan of woke agendas...but I guess that depends on your definition of woke. My definition is treating people from any background with kindness, respect & empathy...if scrapping the Rwanda deal is party of the woke agenda sign me up. Enjoyed these videos David ..I know they arent for everyone, but it involves putting your neck on the line...I dont think i could do it.

    • @davidatkinson-lifematters4826
      @davidatkinson-lifematters4826  Před měsícem +1

      Cheers HP. Kindness, respect, and empathy all good for me. Politicians resisting requests to define what a woman is, is where I draw the line. Rwanda was a nonsense scheme, not only because it came across as callous, but because it was known in advance to be unworkable. I prefer my politicians to be small on promises and good intentions, and big on competence. I find that once I focus on competence, whilst acknowledging the near-impossibility of good/great governance, it's a lot easier to avoid being tribal in favour of one party or the other. It's genuinely been liberating for me, even though I'll still allow myself to criticise politicians who don't meet minimum criteria (see my 10 Rules for Politicians video) all day long. 😉
