0:00 - Intro
Take a regular minor pentatonic scale and make it exotic by adding flavors from other cultures and different types of music.
1:35 - Minor Pentatonic Scale
The classic minor pentatonic scale is found in all genres of music but has so much room to add different notes to make it sound more interesting.
3:02 - A Blues Scale
The first thing you can do to make the scale more interesting is to add a sharp 4 interval away from the root (the starting note). This simple flavor turns it into a blues scale.
4:45 - A Dorian Scale
A Dorian is a more concise way of playing a minor pentatonic scale. You simply add in two more notes to give it more flair. This scale is found in a lot of jazz music.
7:43 - A Romanian/Ukrainian Minor Scale
Take the Dorian scale, alter it a little, and turn it into a Dorian sharp 4 scale, a.k.a Romanian/Ukrainian scale. All you do is add a sharp 4 -- probably how it got its name!
9:50 - A Natural Harmonic Minor Scale
This minor scale is made special by having a major 7 note within it. You'll hear this scale in a lot of jazz and classical music.
11:48 - A Hungarian Minor Scale
If you take the harmonic minor scale and sharpen the 4th, you will get the Hungarian scale. It’s made its way into the mainstream as it is used in Billie Eilish’s "Bad Guy."

About Ayla Tesler-Mabe:
Ayla has been making waves in the world of guitar playing as a professional guitarist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer, since the early age of 14. After only been playing for two years, her first CZcams video (a rendition of John Mayall’s “Hideaway”) put her on the map and kickstarted her music career. She has since been featured in Rolling Stone magazine, become a member of the Ernie Ball and Fender family of artists, and earned various Berklee College of Music scholarships. Musically, Ayla finds great pleasure in exploring the numerous avenues available to her through various styles of music, as seen through her work with Calpurnia and Ludic.

14:35 A Hirajõshi Scale
This scale consists of the 2nd flat third over a minor type chord as well as the 5th flat 6 root. This scale derives from classical Japanese music.
15:49 - A Raga Asavari Scale
The last scale is very similar to the previous one but has a flat 2nd and a 4th and 5th flat 6 root note that differentiates it. It voids the third altogether, meaning you can use it over a minor or major chord.

I like the fact that she displays diagrams of scales. Makes it easy to copy and practice w/o CZcams.
BTW I'm 73 and only have been learning for a year, with a lot of interruptions. Shoulda started when all my teen friends were playing 50+ years ago. But they didn't have CZcams then, or Ayla. Haha....
Wasn’t expecting such an erudite and global POV on scales....this gives me lots of new ideas to play with. Great lesson from a great teacher. Thank you A.
Her energy makes me feel happy 😊
I love how she explains her view and her own timbre.
you really have a natural way of teaching it is a rare quality. Thanks
I don't know why, but, "...and I am wearing a hat" made me laugh on a day where laughter is needed. Thanks for that and the video!
Yeah normal Ayla is very chill but this is her cousin, Hat-Ayla, and she wildin' out with these scales tho.
Her hat made more beautiful, Jim!
Thank you for helping me explore beyond the minor box. Cheers!
Brilliant explanation! Thank you Ayla for taking time to post these videos
Thank you. The scales being shown with the pictures helps to visualize how each scale is related. Good lesson
Ayla, ti si srce, dovoljno te samo gledati, a tvoj dar prenosenja znanja je poseban, veliki pozdrav iz Bosne.
Loved these different scales Ayla! I'd learnt the Am already, so these made a lot of sense to me, and adding flavours of the middle east etc just sounds great to my ears, thanks so much!
This is great. It’s good to have a context of the scales. Love your hat.
One of the best lessons on modes I’ve seen! Thank you!

Thank you for this very interesting video: you explain with greatest clarity the theory of what I have been trying to play for a year without knowing what it is! :) And oyu make your guitar sound amazing ..
Great lesson thanks so much
Thankyou, scales and diagrams are top work.
Thank you for these great lessons!!
Keeping this jewel in my library …great video! I excited to work with these sounds. ✌️
Just keeps getting better. Great work Ayla. Keep smiling.
Thanks Ayla. Much appreciated.
Thank you for this GREAT concept of making the minor pentatonic more exotic. I was absolutely going through that… always using minor pantatonic but really needing to get away from that. The way you presented this was perfect, first showing scale, then using it with a backing loop.
Also in a friendly, engaging way. I really liked the intro of your playing. It really emphasized exotic. One of the best videos I have watched on YT. Just subscribed.
Great lesson. Great teaching style.
Absolutely Great! I'm a bass player learning guitar and Ayla's lessons rock.
Thanks, great lesson.....hope you also have beautiful day.
Very useful lesson...it’s like seeing through a new window, as iam learning guitar since 6 months..and Iam really into playing scales..thank you very much for this video.
Good stuff! Thank you so much! 👍👍👍👍

Guitareo/Ms Ayla, I love your tutorials, and you are such an awesome and wonderfully sweet person! You are an inspiration.
As always , informative.
Wow what a great lesson and explanation of scales and how they are used. Your knowledge of music and different styles is so deep for your young age. I may never catch up to your skill level but I totally enjoyed your sharing of your hard work. I gladly liked and subscribed. PS your hat is awesome too !
We appreciate you thank you ! Have a beautiful day as well.
Which 'exotic' scale is your favorite?
Am pentatonic because that is the only one I know XD
@@shantanusharma5624 Not for long! After watching this, you'll know seven more (:
Hungarian minor and kumoi scales
Nice to mix Pentatonic and Harmonic Minor scales for that Santana sound.
Quite interesting! The Hungarian scale sounds very good to my ears.
Some real gems in this one! Thanks!
Music is life!
Just wanted to say thank you so much for your videos. From the very day i listened to one of your videos I have been greatly inspired and have enjoyed playing so much more even on my standard guitar. I was determined to play in my late teens taking into my early twenties. Now picked it back up at 63 and surprised at how much better I understand and play better without practice all those years. God bless. :)
You have such a beautiful personality, and a velvet colour very agreeable to your voice young lady ! And your teaching skills are formidable. Thanks for sharing your knowledge on CZcams 🌹
Very Very Nice, ill get home and try this out

This is one of the most helpful videos on scales! And, great hat.
New to your channel. Good stuff! Thank you! 🙂
I learned so much from your videos on how to play the guitar 🎸
I would love to see another video like this but showing the Flamenco and the Egyptian scales. Thanks!
Fantastic! Love your music :)
Gr8 lesson love the Hat .. cool
Her intro...priceless.
You are good at teaching 😃👍
You just got another follower, you're just wonderful
Great smile, great hat, incredible eye opening lesson. Subscibed
Fantastic !
Thank you. You made me learn. I have a few interesting fingerings to show you.
Irish guitar legend Rory Gallagher was doing those scales on his '61 strat in '72 with his band "Taste" in Cork ,southern Ireland 🇮🇪. His 2nd Taste album "On the Boards" has a track littered with these sax scales, "it happened before, it'll happen again" .Rory was a sax player also so he didn't always compose like a guitar player. I just had a long conversation about this a few weeks ago in London with British guitar legend John Etheridge who replaced Alan Holdsworth in '70's prog rock band "Soft Machine" at his recommendation.
Keep up the great videos 📹 and play standing up sometimes, break a leg 🦵 😉
Very good lessons
Amazing.. i like your lessons..easy to understand..👍👍
Really love the skill and your knowleged...😘😘
I love your lessons.
I know all of this but still appreciate how you put charts in the video. I usually try to superimpose any scale over A minor too and look where both scales overlap. It's easier that way. I just made up a scale by taking off the 3 an 6 off harmonic minor and adding flat fifth. On occasion adding flat fourth and seventh for Dorian flavor and I like it that way.
Mam u r a beautiful teacher 😘🙌. Keep teaching 🤘🎸.
Ayla, I love your teaching style. I add that it would be more helpful to me if your graphic of the fretboard showed the interval (like 3rd, flat 5, etc) instead of the fret. Keep up the good work.
Wow thank you!!!
Ayla, you are so beautiful and honest about learning guitar. Thank you for this lesson and the hat looks cool.
great videos!
Awesome scales to help add some spice to my playing
Thank you
Wow, that's a lot of info, was lost in the beginning but I think I caught up...lol...thx u
Mixodorian blues scale is my favorite it’s the scale that’s opened so many doors for versatility and just great for noodling
The lesson (as always) was great.
The wide brim hat doesn't hurt either.
I started playing 3 years ago... I have no instructor but have made decent progress learning the basics of theory and chords and scales (taught myself the entire fretboard). But I've been feeling a bit stagnated lately because my skill is not on par with my knowledge of the instrument. I've searched CZcams endlessly looking for videos I could kinda keep up with and most were moving way too fast with little explanation. Then I hit on guitareo! Ayla... You make this fun! I can listen AND learn as well as use the diagrams you provide to SEE what's going on when your fingers move too fast 😁. I practice piece by piece until I get it well enough to practice without the video. Ayla, you are a really good teacher! I'm going to stick with guitareo until I get through all the videos, and other instructors. Thanks a bunch!
Good vibes!👍
Amazing.
Thank you for sharing you skills and experience. I found your teaching style very easy to follow for beginners and helpful.
Do you give online classes too or just CZcams videos. Let me know. I am interested to join your class. Thanks
Very nice... Looks to me like you have 7 more vids to break down (expand) those riffs... Thank you!
I saw the picture for this video and I thought it was love
Awesome video and thank you for sharing your tips🐇🔥❤🆒
Your a great teacher you should sell your teaching skills from beginners to intermediate and advanced I would buy straight away
Great lessons as always. I wished you had put the highlighted spots as you played the scale .
Amazing lesson! I get stuck learning a new scale and only using one particular scale at a time. This really helps to visualize all the options. Could you make one for major as well?
Really like the hat
You are awesome.
im blown away at the power of the min pent. I started working on guitar again, and am finally going the "fretboard mastery" route... and just can't believe how one scale can dominate so hard... as she has said, careers can be made destroying just that one scale.
I enjoyed the journey through the different scales, although, as a beginner it is beyond me for now but I jumped forward in my Guitareo lessons to “Music Theory” and am having fun learning formulas within chromatic scale. Thank you for the inspiration
That's amazing! Glad to hear you're enjoying the lessons :)
