Because this was back when the BCS was extremely corrupt. Crazy thing is that season 5 G5 teams finished higher ranked than UConn, and only 1 of them made a BCS bowl. The G5 had 3 teams in the Top 10 and 4 in the Top 15. And the team that made a BCS bowl was egregiously snubbed out of the national championship game.
In what became one of the greatest snubs, was that #7 Boise State (literally outranked both teams in this bowl) didn’t make a BCS bowl.
Which is probably good because Oklahoma would’ve gotten annihilated by Boise State if they had.
Boise State beat Oklahoma in nearly every single category on both sides of the ball, by record, by Top 25 wins, by Top 25 games, margin and common opponents.
Bob Stoops might of shat himself if he had to play a team that was:
      - 12-1 conference champions
      - beat #6 by 33; beat #13 by 3, beat #18 by 45; beat #24 by 23
      - ranked #2 in total offense
      - scored 50+ in 50% of games; scored 40+ in 90% of games
      - ranked #2 in total defense
      - shutout 3 teams; allowed 11.3ppg
      - averaged a 36.7 margin of victory per game on the season.
By common opponents Oklahoma beat Utah State 28-24. Boise State beat Utah State 56-12.

If Boise State would have gotten in, it would have been in place of Arkansas, and they would have faced Ohio State, though. UConn was the Big East champion, so contractual obligations would keep them in no matter what.

@@brian2440 to make it simpler, Big East was still a BCS AQ meaning its champion IF ranked and had a winning record, would automatically get a January bowl bid in a major game, Boise was still in the MWC , and TCU had gotten that years non AQ slot being top 6 i believe , so normally the BCS had to choose UConn over Boise, especially since last years Fiesta Bowl caused major controversy over 2 non AQs taking a January bowl bid slot in the SAME game. If this happened in the CFP era say Houston and Cincy finished outside top 4 but still top 10, and the ACC Champion runner up/champion had a average record and ranked somewhere between 15-20, they would be in a NY6 bowl, but CFP has to decide over Houston/Cincinnatti.

@@youtubeman3356 You still have 4 LOWER ranked teams that made the major bowl game over them including a team that literally lost to them in the season…..
What really doesn’t look good is the fact that Boise State went undefeated 5 times in 10 years and made only 2 BCS games. They were ranked in the Top 10 7 of 10 years and only made 2 BCS games.
You have a team that’s ranked #1 in the country by 3 major NCAA recognized polling systems and they don’t even make a major bowl game.
That does not happen to other programs. In the last 100 years it has not happened to other programs. that’s a glaring red flag that your system may be corrupt af

@@youtubeman3356 2010 Boise State was ranked #1 by the same poll that gave 2017 UCF their “national championship”.
Difference is 2010 Boise State beat 2 Times as many ranked teams as UCF, ranked 50 times higher than UCF on defense and ranked 1 spot lower than UCF on offense. That’s just rankings.
By stats, they allowed 14 less ppg, scored 0.7 more ppg, and beat their opponents by 14.2 more ppg than UCF. The largest margin of victory UCF had against ranked opponents was 27, for 10 BSU it was 45 and that was against a higher ranked opponent.
And that Boise State team made the f@cking MAACO bowl……

The BCS bowls were obligated to invite a Big East team during this time, and the conference was very weak in football that year.

    • @kevintemple9890
      @kevintemple9890 Před 3 lety +7

The Big East used to be a legitimate Power in Football with schools like Miami, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Syracuse, and Boston College. It wasn’t uncommon in the 90’s and early 00’s to see all of those schools in a Bowl game. As such when the BCS was created it made complete sense to give the Big East champion an automatic bid to a BCS bowl. However Miami and Virginia Tech left the conference and Pittsburgh and Syracuse experienced a major drop off in quality shortly thereafter. The result was a very weakened conference with only West Virginia and Boston College able to occasionally field a team capable of competing at the level of a Oklahoma.

@@RequiemForABuckeye West Virginia had a couple of good teams after, but by this point I remember discussion about the Mountain West being given the Big East's auto-invite. It's too bad the old Mountain West didn't hold together, TCU/Utah/BYU was a good core group. If only Boise State had joined sooner...

UConn may have had a chance with a better game plan. They were never going to be able to run against OK they were too big and fast on the edges and too tough up the middle, but they tried anyway. With a better screen + short pass focus they may have at least been able to keep the OK offense off the field and give themselves a chance. The UConn defense played way too much zone and got shredded. They didn't even try to throw in some trick plays to surprise the OK defense. All in all, a terrible game plan for an underdog.

This game shows how ridiculous the bcs was. 11 against 25? How about number 12? That seems more like a fair comparison. Why rank a team if you don't place any bases on that ranking.
