I find it fascinating that my two heroes Richard Hawley and Brian Setzer both talk about Eddie Cochran all the time. I guess he's the root for all things good ✌🏼️

Richard Hawley has to be one of,if not the most underrated songwriters out there. Obviously because he is British and the U.K. is a much smaller place, his genius is more widely recognized in his native U.K. Even so, I find it to be a shame that over here in America so few have even heard of him. Unfortunately the mainstream music industry has sadly jumped the shark more so than ever in recent years when it comes to the power's that be, basically formulating, shaping and modeling artists in such a way that only supports the pushing of their Luciferian agenda. Those one hit wonder artists that you wonder what happened to,well, more than likely they didn't want to play ball, and help push that agenda.
Even what was once considered sacred, underground, Independent, "indie", music has been infiltrated by these swines! Its no accident that supposed indie labels like Matador records have major, major distribution. It seems like now to really here an unfiltered pure artist the way the artist intended, you have to seek out and find unsigned artists who are self financing and self releasing music themselves on places like Bandcamp.com and Soundcloud. Richard seems like one of the few artists out there that is more pure and more about the music. Although I'm not ignorant to know that in order to operate at any level in the big leagues you have to at least somewhat compromise.
Anyhow, I often think that Richard sometimes gets kept or thrown into a box, where he mistakenly might get written off or pre judged as being just another roots rocker, Chris Isaack type of artist, simply because of his Rockabilly or roots inspired look of quiff backed hair; and large Gretsch hollow body guitars that he can be seen most often playing.
To me this couldn't be further from the truth. Yes there is the Roots/Rockabilly aspect that has influenced not only his writing but his style as well. But to me Richard is so much more than that. For starters he has always been a guitarist's,guitar player. One can clearly hear in his playing that he must have grown up listening to and immersing himself in the music of such electrifying players as Jimi Hendrix, and Jimi paige; while at the same time also paying attention to songwriters such as Lennon and McCartney, as evident in the workmanship or craft that you can hear throughout Richard's work; which brings me to his catalog of albums.
Richard has shown that he is an artist that is not afraid to challenge himself and take chances,by stepping outside of the box so to speak. He hast stretched out from that almost trademark sound that can be found on first few solo albums, that combines brilliantly written, electric, pop rock songs, soaked and layered in gorgeous, beds,of lush orchestral string arrangements. Perhaps without going too far out on a limb, one could maybe even compare some of his early solo work to being in the ballpark of an artist like Jeff Buckley, had Jeff Buckley decided to get into a little bit of Rockabilly?
The above mentioned early solo albums would garner great attention, admiration and critical acclaim in Richard's native U.K.; even gaining praise and support by such commercially viable mainstream artists as Radiohead's Thom Yorke.
Not soon after Richard would follow these albums up with a gorgeous stripped down, pretty much mostly acoustic affair with the album True Love's Gutter. To me this album is almost like Psychedelic acoustic if there is such a thing? On top of the amazing guitar work and great melodies, one can also find some pretty intense,Dylan-esque lyrics as well on that album! Fast forward to Richard's most recent release from 2013,that some are calling a somewhat return to his roots or time spent as a member of the 90's alt rocker's Pulp. Call it what you will, on Richard;s latest solo release he yet again mixed it up,only this time going in the complete opposite direction, churning out an album filled with layered, psychedelic, electric guitars, reveling in amazing guitar tone! Not too mention the amazing melodies coming from the always amazing songwriting.
I really can't wait to see what this guy does next! Seriously for those who are not familiar with Richard Hawley's music, I suggest checking it out. Its top notch Beatles inspired pop hooks combined with a love and passion for good guitar playing and tone, tinged with a bit of roots rock, rockabilly.

Ive also played guitar since my parents got me my first one when I was 12 back in the 60's. Sadly I have only rcently come across this maestro musician as so many say - so underrated!! I have always had acoustic Telecaster or Strats but when I heard the sound of Richards Gretsch - GOTTA GET ONE!! One of my my favourite tracks is 'Oh my Love' that he opens playing with his Gretsch and a bandmember on an electric 12 string and the sound is ..........well how do you describe ethereal perfection??? Now got all his albums!! I wish America would wake up to this superb 'Gretsch Gent'!!

Doing research on my first Gretsch and it got me here. Lots of my fav musicians used Gretsch semi hollow, Richard, Jarvis and James Bagshaw from The Temples. Love the dreamy nostalgic and vintage sound.

4:58 Richard is such a great melodic guitarist. Love his 'G neither' chord - although as Richard plays it, it does seem to have a third in it i.e. the B he plays on the A string. A true hero!

Never could get into a Strat. It just feels off for me. I like the way they sound. But they don't fit me.That's why I have 3 Les Pauls on the wall lol. A hollow body electric like these Gretchs' are what I plan on getting next.
