The media is largely the reason why there's so much racial tension divide and distrust that is dividing people especially in the USA. Same with social media platforms like twitter and facebook. Back then we didn't have that crap and the media bs..we played outside black white mulatto asian or hispanic didn't matter what skin colour or background you were. We were just kids playing hockey baseball football building forts climbing trees having a great time. And we were outside until the street light turned out which was a clear message you better be home.

Three Dog Night is a great band, with 3 great vocalists. "Joy to the World," "Shamballa," "Mama Told Me Not To Come," "Never Been To Spain," and "One." This particular song, "Black and White," is more for kids and sing-alongs ... it's got that kind of vibe. A folk anthem? If that's a term. Cool songs in this "togetherness" vein by other bands at the time include "I'd Love To Change The World" by Ten Years After, "Get Together" by the Youngbloods, "I Just Want To Celebrate" by Rare Earth, and "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" by the Hollies. A few years later, "Why Can't We Be Friends?" by War. Speaking of war, if you haven't heard "War" by Edwin Starr, it's excellent, and it's part of the anti-war sentiment of the era.

Your message of unity, like the song's message of unity, is very cool. Unity should be an obvious thing, but the times we're all in right now seem more about division. Let's hope division will soon be looked back on as a moronic social contagion. Anyway, the song 'Black and White' was written in 1954 and recorded by Pete Seeger in '56. It's hard to believe now, but when Three Dog Night released this version in '72 reggae was not really a familiar sound on mainstream radio, with the notable exceptions of Johnny Nash's 'I Can See Clearly Now' from the same year, and Desmond Dekker's 'Israelites' from '69. That would soon change...

As a child growing up in the 70's, YES there was a spirit in the air of "togetherness" overall. No doubt. Yes, there was still some racism, violence etc. back then too of course. But the 70's was really cool, most kids didn't see "color" as a big deal...and in my diverse blue collar neighborhood not far from Chicago, it was pretty chill for the most part. We all got along, and also looked out for each other.

I was a little kid in 1972, in elementary school. I remember this song. We sang it at an assembly at school one day. I grew up in a Mexican neighborhood (my school had no Black kids and maybe 3 white kids) and it wasn't until college that I met a Black person for the first time. This song often played in the back of my head and I was so excited to meet a Black person when it happened. We became best friends.
Racial equality was a big deal in the 70s. The Civil Rights movement was only a few years before. There was a lot of hope that race relations might be good in the near future. TV series were often revolved around it. Some did a good job dealing with the issue like "All In The Family", "The Jeffersons", "Good Times", "Benson", "Welcome Back Kotter", and some tried but didn't quite do it so well like "Different Strokes". Back then, nobody could imagine that it would still be an issue today. We were supposed to be very advanced and have colonies on the Moon and Mars by now!

I was coming to say the same thing. But:
I lived in Florida Of course we sang the song. But on the other hand, my school was still 95% white. The very few black kids were bussed in from so far across the county, they got up EARLY EARLY to ride that bus. They’d fall asleep in class. Some teachers would either get mad at them and way them up saying they were lazy. or let them sleep but say negative things about them not going to bed as early as they should. Their parents not taking care of them. Either way, we learned to think negatively about those few kids in our school systems reluctant attempt at 🎉
Only as an adult did I understand their busses were probably picking them up 2 hours before school started. Those of us living close enough to school to walk were still asleep when they were already up & and dressed and all.
They didn’t get home as soon either, obviously.
I was well grown before I appreciated the school system was not teaching the same lessons my parents and some teachers were trying to teach. The lessons werent overt. But it was years of indirect messaging.

Younger people back then had a lot of hope that we were going to get rid of racism and all get along. While we made a lot of progress, we seem to have backslide but I hope we get there. Music can cause changes that might take longer otherwise. We need more songs like this.

Three Dog Night had a big hand in introducing artists who weren't yet well known to the American public. For example, they covered Harry Nilsson's 'One' in '68 and Elton John's 'Lady Samantha' in '69. They wrote original material, but it was often overshadowed by their generally great covers...

That's funny, because even though I am adopted, I have figured out that my bloodline is about 75% Irish. Who knows when they came over though, that information is lost to history.
Lots of really interesting information there about the mix of specific cultures and everything. And yeah, Italians Jews Japanese Chinese, you name it. It's always about Us as a group versus the Other as a group. Pink Floyd describe this wonderfully in their song "Us and Them" from their iconic Dark Side of the Moon album.
I see where somewhere below somebody listed off a string of their greatest hits, or some of them anyway. I would say that all of their hits were just so fantastic. And these guys could flat-out sing. The more you listen to them, the more you see all the different ways in which they really incorporate that in such moving ways. I love all of their hits, but for some reason their song "One" not only gets to me emotionally, but I just love the singing on it so much.

It’s sad to think that the diversity that came from the Civil Rights Movement of the 50’s and 60’s and was propelled by groups like Three Dog Night and others has not produced “enough” change relative to the efforts of so many. Keep it going brother, you’re leaning in just fine. 👈😉

Is the issue that it didn't produce enough change, or that a political party exploits division by pretending nothing has changed or has gotten worse to make sure they continue to stay in power? I know the answer and left that party for the first time in my life about 8 years ago when I recognized what they were doing.

@@shyman99 Well said. What I miss is the artists of the late 60’s well into the 70’s such as Dylan, Crosby,Stills,Nash and Young, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and others, expressing through their music a relationship to the truths of the day. It made it easy for an impressionable kid like me to quickly understand the wider world around me. That, and that alone, is what makes that Era so meaningful. It took me some time however to realize that with each passing generation, what’s old becomes new again, and this unnecessary struggle continues for the very reasons you mentioned. Regards, to you and yours.

This song is a celebration specifically of desegregation. There were several post civil rights songs that touched on these themes. It reminds me that back at that time there was a lot of hope for the future. Things are a lot different in 2023 then back at that time, but I think we expected it to be `over with` so to speak. We expected that by 2023, race wouldn't be an issue anymore. Sadly, it still is.
