- Here's all the never before seen cutscenes from the prototype of the game Batman for the NES. Very different from the version we all know. We learn a lot more about the plot of the game and some things made more sense. There's also a completely different ending and a new music at the end. Thanks to www.skrybe.net for the ROM.
You can see pictures taken from this prototype in the issue #8 of Nintendo Power in the preview for the game.
You can check my website for more details and scans of the actual preview in Nintendo Power. It's in french, but the images speak for themselves.

"Where is she?"
"Gotham City!"
"Gotham City?"
Yeah Bats. You know. The city you live in and exclusively fight crime in?
He might as well have say "On planet Earth"
Captain N hahahahahahahaha!
Thank goodness they made the call to cut this.
Axis Chemicals?...I'll kill everybody there!
thatonedrewguy where is Nick and Judy?
Frnnick: they in Gotham City!
2:21
JOKER- Welcome Batman, I have been specting you
BATMAN- : |
JOKER- Unfortunately, your days are numbered
BATMAN- D:
suprised pikachu face
“Unfortunatery”, heh.
Batman: Where's Vicki, do you know?
Thug: Gotham City!"
Me: Oh shit, this guy did not just get sarcastic, kick his ass Batma-
Batman: Gotham City? (Cutscene ends)
Me:...(Facepalm.)
Really amazing to see. The cut-scenes integrate with the levels quite well, though the ending is strange.
Thanks a million for posting!
2:04, I like how the lights flash on the Batmobile.
Thanks for sharing. With this unused ending; Batman: Return of the Joker makes a lot more sense.
WOW!! I definitely remember seeing photos of some of these cut scenes in the Nintendo Power review of this game, back in the day. Pretty surreal to finally watch the scenes in action ,for the first time, after all of these years. I really like the scene before the first level. That ending was crappy as hell though. So glad that was changed. One of my all time favorite NES games.
Remember reading that too
These cutscenes are really cool! Too bad there’s no final battle with Joker. It made less sense without you getting to fight him.
The I rated Gamer did mention something about combining the cutscenes of this game with the Game play of the normal one. That way you can watch them and still Acutely Fighting the Joker and send him down to his doom
"Unfortunatery, your days are numbered."
"Did you say, 'unfortunatery'?
"My welcoming committe is here to greet you". I just love the cheesy dialogue in the cutscenes of these old games. Considering the NES version is very LOOSELY based on the film, I wonder why these scenes didn't make it into the final product, I know I'd love them as a child! This stuff was our "reward" for making it through the levels
Awesome!!! How cool is it to see these after so many years of seeing the old ones, which were epic in themselves!
This is fucking superior. Even if I, admittedly, really liked/like seeing the Batmobile in movement (as shown in the cutscenes of the released version). But this... How the cutscene connects to the first stage...! It's so awesome. Let me clarify.
We see a detailed Batman flying down in a cutscene. The next thing we know, we see him flying down in the actual game, and we can start playing immediately. It's almost seamless, and makes the game feel more well made.
This provides even more context than the original game sequences!
Great cutscenes.
Shame they didn't keep them.
The only changes I'd make would be adding a spot for Batman in the title screen cutscene, making the Batman in the ingame cutscenes look a little more Keaton-like, & retool the end cutscene to lead in to the boss fight with the Joker.
Whoa... lots of things are making sense now. Thanks for sharing this video of one of my favorite NES games =D
the cut scenes are awesome for an NES game!
03:56 I Love this Part
I have this game & prefer these cutscenes you showed & you're right it does make the game more interesting
"Where's Vicki, do you know?"
"She's in Gotham City!"
"Gotham City? OF COURSE SHE'S IN GOTHAM CITY! NOW QUIT FOOLING AROUND!"
love the cut scenes
It's pretty awesome how the ending is just Batman punching Joker in the face. The end!
Wow, it is like Vicki Vale and The Joker look like the "movie" versions, but Batman looks like from the comic book, until the end when he meets up with Joker, then it looks a tad like Michael Keaton.
If you like Batman or the NES, this is a good one:)
Amazing cutscenes
The intro theme is badass such kickass beats! I wanna download that!
OMG, I never seen this before
"Vicki's in Gotham City" should be the next "Our princess is in another castle". It's just as helpful.
@xalisquillo no. supposedly, the cutscene graphics are based on the Killing Joke novel.
It would be cool if a mod combined all of the cutscenes of this version along with the ones from the retail version (As well as the Joker fight)
Wow. this is really interesting!
lol the way that the prototype ends the game actually sets up Batman Return of the Joker a lot better. There is no way in hell that the Joker would have survived the fall from the final NES version. It all makes sense now :).
That being said, I much prefer the climactic battle for the final cut.
Thank you for sharing this, BrYaN5555!
Batman: Gotham City? Me: (Facepalms) the developers definatly knew jack shit about Batman. Lol
Thank you for upload! I'm very interested about games based on Tim Burton's Batman. :)
thanks for this, great game.
Batman on the NES is better than every snes superhero game
Also, A+ to the ending:
FALCON PAUNCH!
your right, it makes a lot more sense with these cutscenes.
UNFORTUNATERY they couldn't add some of theses gorgeous cutscenes on the final version
Is there any explanation about it ?
this was an awesome game
The ending her makes sense since the was the sequel
4:17 - Joker's facial expression is downright hilarious here.
iam 19 year and i still love to play old games
LOL that still of him punching the Joker at the end just needs an animation of handwriting that says "Thanks for playing! I'm Batman" in cursive over it.
My two cents:
*I think the final version of the intro describes the main cast in better detail.
*This version of the Stage 2 cutscene is better, but the Batmobile doesn't look like it's moving.
*The Stage 4 cutscene was useless.
*I love the pre-final boss cutscene, but you can't end the game on Firebug. The cutscene after beating him should've stayed to set up the Joker fight.
*The last shot of Batman punching Joker would've made a great lead-in to the ending of the final version.
A combo betweens this and the original would be nice. You’ll get the awesome cutscenes and actually fight Joker still and finish him off by knocking him high off the roof to his death
I think they took them off, both because they didn't follow the movie very much and probably also because some of them were weird, like the ending, the scene where Batman looks for Viki or other scenes that end in a weird way.
Batman for the NES is probably the only good “movie to video game” game.
perhaps the cut scenes were dropped because of cost-say going down to a smaller KB size rom chip? Or better to use the memory for a final Joker fight instead?
I LOVE this game!
OMG!
Its Awesome!
Nevermind about the skipping by pressing jump...I realized my controller 1 and 2 settings were the same.
at the 2:20 with the Jokers grin, green face and hat, he almost looks like the Grundel from Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters.
It's amazing how... Not like the movie the dialogue is in this game. Still, it's a shame these cutscenes got scraped, some pretty good stuff!
I gotta admit, while I prefer this version of the ending for it being more in character with Batman, I do miss that funny ass sound effect when the Joker falls in the official ending. I always pictured Joker pulling out a slide wistle as he was going down because of that.
The ending here is more faithful to Batman in general but unfaithful to the movie this game is based on.
I had this game, but alot of these scenes ive never seen, the one that sticks in my head is the batmobile screaming along and shooting down the chem factory doors, looked and sounded great! Though this one looks different to the one i had, was there more than one version of the game?
someone should do a mod that combines this version with the final version
I always wondered where that scene of Batman interrogating the thug in the beginning went, I remember seeing it in Nintendo Power.
@hanchiman
Yeah, It's hard not to laugh at 4:17!
I like the nes batman game but it doesn't really follow the movie seriously batman doesn't kill people... I do like the fact that the villians are from the comic book series...but the joker is drawn to resemble jack nicholson...strange ..it also worth noting that the final game is flawed... Example when you run out of weapons batman doesn't default to fists it he continues to through the motion of using the weapon that was equipped when he ran out of ammo ...and it won't default back to fists untill batman dies since you can't use a weapon or punch your only option is to let batman die... Then the bosses for the most part are to easy to defeat boss one you just stand near the left side of the screen and whack the guy with the batarangs when he swoops down at you..the square block things are the only boss that is really a challenge for me ... In fact it's so much of a challenge I haven't gotten past it...and therefore haven't finished the game...
I don't know. What I think is that SunSoft developped the game before the movie was completed, and maybe after that, they were told to change the story to go along more with the one in the movie. So they just added random scenes with quotes from the film. Just a supposition...
Sick I like it
@xxDarkHeartxx731 This was modeled after Ninja Gaiden. Coincidentally, the NES sequel was modeled after Megaman. Search for "Return of the Joker NES."
hahaha unfortunatery. i played wwf raw for genesis for ages and never realized that even in the final version, razor ramon was billed from miami flordia
Yep!
@WallKenshiro In the cutscenes, he looks EXACTLY like Jacquio from Ninja Gaiden (NES).
This was the Prototype or Beta Test to the game that you played, basically a somewhat-completed version that's meant to be played by internal testers in order to feel what more needs to be implemented and what needs to go bye-bye.
In this case, the cutscenes had to be closer to the movie and had to look better, hence why this is different from the game released in stores.
Why did they cut off those scenes?
They connect properly the various stages and give much more sense to Vicky Vale whom in the final product is just introduced at the beginning.
I don't know why they removed these cutscenes but if I had to guess, it was most likely to free some cartridge space for the Joker battle. Which was a good call since it turned out to be one of the most iconic final bosses in gaming. Although I wish they just removed Firebug instead.
OH NO! ITS YOU!!!
What are you worried about Joker? You have a gun as big as a yardstick and can summon lightning from the heavens.
@mmartino2 Read the TITLE of the CZcams video. It's a PROTOTYPE. That means it's an incomplete, early version.
They should have kept some of the cut scenes, because the game shows Vicki Vale for no reason at all and does not show that she was kidnapped. The should have kept the cinema screen of the Joker introducing his lackey, because that looked awesome, then skip to the ending on the actual game after beating the Joker.
ONE!
PUNCH!
4:26 😂
@hanchiman The final game also says "deserted." Maybe they meant to imply it was deserted by law enforcement?
A lot of the graphics on these cut scenes were actually pretty impressive, although the tone is a little different.
Would be cool if someone made a fan hack that added these cutscenes back in. The Joker fight, as someone mentioned in these comments, could come right after Batman punches him in the cutscene.
that's a great idea. would be good to see that.
So this game used to have an actual plot. Wonder why they changed it. Not enough space on the cartridge?
These are WAY cooler!!!
looks like the prototype was completed before the movie and then updated to better match up with the movie's plot
I might have to adjust my BatDance Editor to be able to edit this rom! :P
Eu adorei
I wonder if the bonus point power-ups actually served a useful purpose in this version. It seems like they didn't do anything in the final version, didn't lead to extra lives, though the infinite continues would've made extra lives redundant.
@yusukeelric NES has color palette limitations.
04:40 " To be continued ".
Including these scenes would likely have increased Sunsoft's success at the time.
However, their absence creates a minimalism that creates a better game, as a piece of art. All the more so over time.
oh thank god they did not have all these cutscenes, what an anticlimax to not have the joker as final boss!
I think the same too. Like that, the game actually have a story. In the final version, you basically have no story, just the Joker throwing some lines here and there...
4:16 is simply the best thing
damn, those are some of the best ive seen on nes, why did they change it?
WTF? You don't get to fight the Joker at the end? Good video thou thanks for uploading it
i think the part were batman kills jokers sub boss and he creeps back and punches the joker BUT
they should of kept the joker boss battle though
Batman looks... so old...
Ok, I know 2 of the bosses are Killer Moth & Electricutioner, but who do you fight in place of The Joker?
4:27 credits should have rolled under the picture while that music was playing. would have been an epicer ending.
The joker looks like TheMask
bob, gun
Batman don't know where shit is
So, Joker's Dragon is the Final Boss in the prototype version of Batman(NES).
2:29 - "UNFORTUNATERY"
RO-F-L!
