Hey guys, plantains and bananas bear only one fruit during the life of the plant. After harvesting the bunch you need to cut down the plant leaving about 2 to three feet of the plant left in the ground. This will spur the growth of a new plant. If you leave the plant standing after reaping it will just stay there in limbo for a long time. Subscribed from Jamaica.
You cut the one that produced (main), and from the cluster of offshoots (hijos), you leave the talest one and you can remove the other for seed to replant.

I live in the country, not an awesome rainforest, but far enough out of town that animals get dumped near us often. This just infuriates me because if we didn't help the poor cats/dogs they would die because they have always depended on people for survival. Humans that dump their pets are not worthy to suck the same air that their pets do. You guys are good humans and those babies and momma are fortunate that you were there to help when they needed it. Keep doing what you do, you are appreciated by all of us for it!
People that dump thier pets outside of town should get crabs that can never be cured.

That majestic palm tree on your property is called Palma Real ( Royal Palm) it’s the puertorrican palm tree, original from the island its nomenclature or scientific name is Rohystonea Borinquensis, remember the island was called by the tainos Boriken then the Spanish change it to Borinquen, thence the name Rohystonea Borinquensis, beautiful land with lots of taro and ginger plants, harvest their roots when ready and also remember when harvesting bananas or plantains, cut the plant around 30 inches from the ground, they only produce once
The elephant ears look like taro leaves to me. If they are, then they're edible. You can harvest the corms and cook them. They're very nutritious.
If banana plants are too old they're not gonna give you fruit. Cut down those old stalks above the ground and let new shoots grow from the bases. Keep cutting down old stalks every other year to let new shoots grow for abundant supply of bananas.

Looking good guys. At 21:10, the tree behind you looks like it could be a breadfruit tree. As for the banana trees, some varieties do get quite tall. A banana tree will only fruit once in its life, so the easiest way to harvest is just to cut the whole tree down, it will die and fall anyway, but don’t worry, there’s always new shoots coming up around it. A complete banana bunch is called a rack of bananas. Aloha from Hawaii!

If ya'll are reading OPs comment, there's a variety of ways to eat breadfruit and two of the main ways they cook it in PR is to boil it in chunks or flatten out small pieces and deep fry them. Enjoy!

Doesn't so much matter how high the bananas get to harvest as you can cut the plant down to get to the bunch: The plant lasts a season will grow to maturity in approx 9 most and die once it has fruited / the banana is harvested. You will normally see at least a few pups- babies of that plant growing at its base so take care not to crush as that is next years crop. Leave one or two pups at the base of dead/ decomposing mama- transplant the rest of the pups to grow/increase your orchard. Another way to expand is planting banana fruit in pots for more trees when they mature. There are varieties of dwarf banana trees which make some of this easier to manage. Congrats- enjoy your beautiful land!!
In some species of banana, the pups/ suckers won't grow well in the same hole that the mama plant was so they are usually dug out and replanted in other holes to grow into powerful banana plants.
And make sure to get a decent little chunk of the root corm when transplanting suckers. That way they have some reserve energy, and don't have to work so hard to survive the first month.

You have spring water, and rain water, also, the creek "river" probably has shrimp , you have bananas, guavas, breadfruit, wild ginger coffee and root vegetables ( elephant ears) some that may be eatables . It's a beautiful place.

You have a nice breadfruit tree (the tree with the big leaves behind you just before going into the woods off of the road). The fruits are great to roast; they have a slight texture of baked potato but a little dry.

My takes on this video (hope it helps): Guaba are “guayaba”. The coffee plants are fighting for sunlight so they will grow very tall (suggest planting some from the ripened seeds). The stream (manantial) water only needs to be filter thorough a regular multimedia filter (no chemicals). You can report the dumping of cats to the police with the video you have. I suggest a solar security camera with an SD card that people see from the road. This will help provide security and deter potential animal dumping. Some elephant ear plants (taro roots) are edible. To get the bananas down, cut the plant in a way that it falls slowly. Keep up 💪
I love the transition from sailing to homesteading. I noticed that you guys have tons of wild ginger and taro on your property. Start pulling some of the plants by the roots. Tons of videos on CZcams about harvesting what you guys already have to eat.
By the way, Puerto Rico now has (since 2020) a Master Gardener Extension program through University of Puerto Rico. They can help with plant cultivars, pruning, propogation, etc. I would also advise learning how to dry your fruits, like the bananas/plantains you just harvested! Good stuff.

Have you two mentioned about getting a few goats? They eat just about everything and with light weight movable fencing they can clear a lot of growth specially when you’re dealing with fast growing plants. They are used for this reason all around the world plus they like rough terrain.

You need to get at least one goat
Glad you have walked your property's perimeter. Unless you have found markers, I'd get a 100' tape and compass, start from a known location on property's recorded map and do some measurements. PR's property laws are different than most mainland US and more like "possession is 9/10ths of the law" on something called adverse possession, where someone could use part of your land, improve upon it, and after a certain amount of time could claim as their own. Laws were modified in 2020.
When you start looking for a building site, some of the major considerations- water, power, soil conditions for building and for septic, steepness of terrain, distance from road, ease of getting material to site (driveway length, steepness, crossing streams, underlying soil, need for gravel, can big truck/construction machines navigate etc). If you are going to power by solar, then orientation of building for PV roof mounting, shading and place for ground mounts come into consideration.

Hey Matt I have been watching you guys for a while now, I think I have watched all of your videos. I think this trick with the string trimmer will help you. Go buy a larg carbide saw blade and use it instead of the blade you are using. The carbide blade needs to have as many carbide tips as you can find 10" or 12" it will cut trees up to 5" or more in a single pass. Happy cutting. I bought a 35' coronado center cockpit sale boat that I now live on. Your video's inspired me to go after my long time dream. Thank you for that.
Seems our property is favourite kitten dumping ground also. Sadly, the bobcats, owls, foxes and coyotes usually get them before we can capture them. The bigger struggle is more often than not, it's a racoon that ends up in the trap and they tear it apart before we can get it out.

Hogs will root up an entire area- something that would likely help you keep your jungle controlled.
I've been attaching our bamboo inch by inch to our 4 foot high fence using rebar wire. Had to put support posts periodically since it catches the wind like a sail. Looking good and makes good privacy.
Your clearing tool is called a billhook. I'd recommend ordering a quality one. If you have a way accepting gifts through the mail I'd love to send you one. I'd be repayed by seeing you use a tool I sent. I'm an over the top tool nerd. From axes to pliers I search for the best. Where steel is sourced and how it's forged are details often overlooked. When top grade steel meets experienced engineering it makes working with the tool much more satisfying. USA, Germany, Japan just to name a few are good things to look for when buying a tool made of steel. China does make good steel but finding it is not easy. Good luck you two.
Lee Valley Tools ships internationally, and has very high quality products. Not sure about the billhook, but lots of woodsy and outdoor tools, along with tools for the craftsman, like hand planes and gouges. Plus i think you get a year of rainy-day-evening reading catalogs when you order a certain amount. Kinda the Sears-Roebuck of hand tools gardening, carpentry and furniture hardware.
Gotta say..Kristen does smooth and beautiful filmography and mixing , so i feel that there is a potential business for her on the island .

Those yellow fruits are guavas (guayava in spanish). 21:25 the tree directly behind Matt is a breadfruit tree, try to take care of that one as well. The elephant ears you found, those might be Malanga, the tuber portion is edible after you boil it with a little salt (for taste). Ya'll definitely have a bountiful property!

My dad use to put up chain link fencing and then let grape vines cover them. He always referred to it as a seasonally edible fence. My mom also would make really good jams and juice from them.
So your elephant ear are taro root. You eat the root like potatoes. It's a farm plant. The way it works with banana/plantain is that when they are ready you cut down the palm and harvest. The plant would already have had side shots by then. The reason they fall is that they parish after fruiting
Also, it take about 15 years for a palm tree to grow to it's maximum height of about 40 feet. It is pretty hard to judge the height when you are at ground level, so i'm sure yours looks taller than it actually is. Cheers!!

Since the old home structure is so close to the road it might be nice to one day restore it as a roadside farmer's market or as a tourism office or any use that can get people to visit and spend money.
Hey you guys! Y’all are such hard workers, it’s maybe because I am over 70 now, but Matt, I think you might want to look into a walk behind brush cutter it’s like a lawnmower from hell. Geared low and slow. Will cut down small trees up to 5 inches in diameter. A friend came across an old 50’s model did the necessary repairs and it was pretty much astonishing at what that thing could do. As much as you have to clear and maintain (stuff grows at an alarming pace in the tropics) it may be worth a look. They are not too over the top priced. Any way love you two and looking forward to seeing your next video.

The difference between bannans and plantains is - look at the fruit, the plantain has 3 sides ( you know, the skin you peel) and the bannans have 4 or 5 sides 🙂 Plantains are treated like potatoes, they do not taiste very good raw. Fry them or boil them 🙂

Although it takes a little to spin up, your string trimmer can take a kit that will let you mount a 12inch circular saw blade on it. It will cut through some pretty gnarly vines and small saplings pretty easy. The grass sometimes builds up, but that happens with just the string. You might be able to even just mount the blade under the string cartridge. (it does have left hand threads to take it off)

For the banana trees, when the bananas are ripe for picking, you chop the whole tree down. The stem becomes mulch and a new tree grows up.

Here’s an idea to help clear your land…goats! They will eat anything! And can clear large tracks of land at the same time too! So while your figuring out others needed areas the goats can be doing a great service for you! Might see if any farmer around or somewhat nearby would loan you or you could rent a herd or two to mow down that vegetation for you!

Ive followed you for nearly 4 years, on and off. This is an exciting move you two have made for your lives. It's the perfect change for the story, also. I am retired, own properties in Florida, but now am interested wild and tropical like you have. How many acres do you have there, and just how far is it from the ocean?
They are an hr from ocean o they said in an earlier vid. They said they got a great deal on land. Im sure its cheaper there than in the states??
Making great progress! Iguanas will be a challenge for sure. If its a plant they find tasty, its almost impossible to keep them out. Chicken wire they just climb over.
Get some signs that say they’re “Under Surveillance”, maybe in Spanish? LOL! Maybe the water was to fill a Cistern. Many of these things you need to know how to do , are on Utube and lots of information about finding different ways of doing things too and identifying different things. You could probably find something you can spray on your fence line that kills the weeds and is environmentally friendly. There’s a homemade version of nearly everything.
Great work! Good for you guys. Watch out for worms in the guayabas. They’re about the same size and color as the seeds. After you cut one open, wait for a few seconds. If nothing is moving, you are in the clear. Guanabanas or soursop are green with small spikes. About the size of a big grapefruit. The elephant ear plants should be taro, a root vegetable which you can eat. You probably have yucca and wild sweet potatoes growing in there!

Drone shots add a lot to the perspective of the adventure and it is not over used. Many channels fall in love with that expensive camera and drone you to death. Elephant ears are quite poisonous. If you bushwhack through them, immediately take a cool soapy shower. If you get the white sap on your skin, wash with soap and water.

There's around twenty seven varieties of bananas. When you take a bunch of bananas down, you have to cut the whole plant down. The banana plant will make a pup, To replace the plant you cut down when you harvest your bananas. Enjoy. The big palm tree is called a royal palm. The palm tree by your road looks like a queen palm. You need to plant some coconut Palms. Just stick a coconut in the ground and it will grow. Don't bury the nut just about halfway in the ground works. Enjoy your new jungle.

Put a brush cutting blade where your string cutting head is it make clearing it a lot easier.
I personally think a gas powered mechanical hedger would do wonders for you. It would work as well as your current favorite hand tool for land clearing yet you’d have a little better control. You might need an ax or a small chainsaw to take out trees that are too big for the hedger to deal with, but it would cut through the vines and most everything else.
Love your videos, and your land, hope it works out for you to make a great place to live and thrive, just a FYI if you didn't know referring to your bee sting. If you get stung out in the wild and can't get any treatment on it right away, pack mud onto the sting area and let it dry, as it dries it will pull the stinger and venom out quickly, if you can't find mud make your own even if you have to pee on dirt to make some, also works for any other stings, bites, punctures etc, Grated potato works very well to and baking soda made into a paste with water. One more thing for both you and your animals, get brewers yeast tablets, feed them to your animals, cats and dogs love them like candy, also take them yourselves daily. brewers yeast puts out a scent in your skin oil that bugs and bees, ticks fleas cant stand and will not attack you or your animals, I got rid of mange on my dog using brewers yeast within a month, my cat and dog loved them like M&M's, just a couple a day.

Mat, I think when you want to get a bunch of bananas from a tree you usually cut the tree down as it is finished doing it's job and new suckers will grow to continue the plantation.
The tree with the big leaves at 09:41 is a fast growing but weak one; in a storm you will see their branches break. Best to cut down as many of them as possible to let other more beneficial plants grow.

A huge amount of work to clear some of the areas to get ready to build, but it is going to be a lot of work to keep it clear and harvest some of the rewards. Keep having fun on this adventure like we are watching it!

A good way to clear land is to get a couple of goats. Just solidly tether them in the area you want cleared and they will clear it in a few days. Then move them to the next spot. If you want to clear a lot of land quickly get a herd of 20 or 30 goats and set up those portable temporary electric fences. You'll be amazed how quickly they will take care of the undergrowth. Either way, you just need to make sure they have access to water.
That land looks like it could have been quite a bit of farm/pasture land as some point. Wonder if they will find a foundation of an old building (not at the road) at some point.

You guys are ruining all the natural vegetation! Don't level everything you see use paths leave areas as is.. The water from a spring is pure but once you store it then it will require proper filtration

Their are acres of land nothing wrong with making a path, bamboo grows back extremely fast. Go do something useful

Being allergic to stuff is no fun and could be dangerous and where you two hard working people are at ,there maybe a few things to be concerned about . We usually try to have some Benadryl on us which could for most times counteract an allergic reaction . This could be purchased over the counter at most stores. Really love watching you two , keep it up and stay safe .
Your elephant ears in Jamaica we call them “coco plants”.. the root is edible.. you boil it like yams with a little salt, eat with a protein of choice.
