  • Not the most exciting video I have ever made, but water testing is important.
The most cost effective way of doing this is with liquid test kit, electronic test reading kits are available, but these can be quite costly so we'll talk about the liquid one.
A talk on water test kits, the ones I use and a demo of the JBL Pro Scan test kit.
All pond keepers need to have the basic means of testing the pond water, a liquid test kit is an inexpensive way of doing this.
There are lots of options out there with regards to test kits for your pond water, here I talk about a few I have to hand and what I like and don't like about them and my preferred kit of choice.
The Kits I talk about are:-
    Colombo Test kit - www.ketteringk...
    API kit - www.pro-shrimp...
    JBL Pro Scan - www.fishkeeper...
To check the chlorine levels you need a DPD no4 tablets:- www.ebay.co.uk...

Kusuri kits are very good downside is crushing tablets and you need the different types, but accurate

Great video. I use the Hanna digital test meters for ammonia, nitrite and chlorine. Cost about £60 each. Not cheap but very accurate.

Great video, the phone camera test kit is such a great idea but shame it is not to be relied upon yet. Surprised technology hasn’t developed quicker for pond water testing.

I use Colombo Strips, if anything pops up, I then use liquid's. I test Chloride liquid only...

Hi Andrew, my current favourite test kit is the JBL liquid tests. what i like about them is you look down through the the glass vial and compare with a second vial filled with clear pond water. Have you got a amazon wishlist ? would be happy to send you one.would be good to hear your thoughts on them.

Liquid test kits are ok for an average pond but if you keep good fish you need far more accurate results using something like a photometer, though they are expensive, measuring in 0.25ppm is not good enough, one slight shade difference could be the difference between life and death of the fish, ammonia toxicity is depend on pH and temp, nitrite at .25 ppm is too high, nitrate will also affect fish but there is no way your nitrate is that low at 25ppm, an average pond will be about 30ppm above tap water, if it is over 100ppm then the fish will suffer longer term,
Measuring pH of water straight from the tap gives a false reading because of the dissolved carbon dioxide in pressurised water, you need to let it sit for 24-48 hours to get a true reading.
Another important test you’ve missed is copper, my source water is 200 times higher than what koi can tolerate, copper will build up over a period of time in a fish and affect immune system.
Though I understand the sentiments of the video, you should implore people to study water in more detail than just watching you tube videos.
If measuring pH of pond water, the sample must be taken from below the surface, in addition pH can change dramatically during the day and should be tested in the morning and again in the evening, with a lot of algae the change in pH during the day can really upset the fish. There is much more to add but I would encourage people to read from educated sources, many people get a false sense of security or because they see it on the internet then it must be true, more often than not, information on the internet is just repeated hearsay and actually harmful to the fish.

I bought a JBL Pro Scan about a year ago. As I am RED/GREEN colour blind I thought it was a brilliant idea. As I knew no better I trusted it and started getting results all over the place. I was chasing the numbers. I then decided to do 2 tests with the kit using the same water one after the other. I got very different results. I contacted JBL with my findings and they just said the light mustn't have been right when I did the camera part of the test. How can you possibly ensure that the light is the same. Maybe I needed a light meter! I haven't used it since.

Lol red green here, and yeah even a test after a test could result in differing results, shame as if it worked, brilliant idea for the money!

No never felt then need to test for it, I have plenty of air going in so it's not something I think the pond struggles with
