This painting and video is all about how to paint loosely and freely with watercolour. Painting wet in wet with watercolour lends itself to painting loosely and this occurs much more easily if you use hake brushes. My advice is, if you would like to paint more loosely then use hake brushes, just paint shapes not things and paint wet in wet with a limited palette. I hope you enjoy this video!

    Paper:
Arches A4 Cold Pressed 300gsm Watercolour Paper
    Paints:
    Alizarin Crimson Permanent
    Cerulean Blue
Mix of Cobalt Blue and Light Red
Mix of Winsor Blue (red shade) and Light Red
    Brushes:
    2 Inch Holbein Hake
    1 Inch Holbein Hake
Pure Kolinsky Round Sable Size 12
    Riggers x2
Series 7 Round Sable by Winsor and Newton Size 0 to sign it
    Brushes:
Brushes are important but you don’t need a huge number to be able to paint really well! I love Holbein Hake Brushes as they are softer, have less thickness and so hold a bit less water than the Ron Ranson Hake Brushes (which I like as it gives me more control). I like the thickness of the handle (thinner and lighter than the Ron Ranson Hakes) and the overall weighting of them. But having said all of that you could probably use any sort of hake (although I don’t love Art Spectrum’s Hakes).
    Size 12 Round Sable
Pure Kolinsky Round Sable Size 12 - Cornellisen (quite expensive over $150)
    geni.us/PureKolinskySableSize
    geni.us/IsabeyPureKolinsky
    or
Synthetic Round Sable Size 12 - Micadore For Artists - roymac Revolution Taklon - ($20)
    geni.us/SyntheticRound
Hake Brushes x 3-4 (you could also get a wide 6”-8” hake brush if you wanted to)
Holbein 2.5” Hake Brush (my preference)
Holbein 2” Hake Brush (my preference)
Holbein 1” Hake Brush (my preference)
    geni.us/HolbeinHakeBrush
    or
Ron Ranson Large Hake Brush (about 2”)
Ron Ranson Small Hake Brush (about 1”)
    geni.us/RonRanson
    Flat Nylon
Long Flat Nylon - Robert Wade Neef 980 Taklon Wash: geni.us/RobertWadeNylon
    Fan Brush
Fan Brush (I own size 1’s mainly and a size 6) - can be any brand really - I own two Winsor and Newton size 1 fan brushes and an Art Spectrum Series 1000FAN size 6.
I would get Hogs Hair Fan Brushes as they make more interesting marks but that is always personal preference. Some cheap ones on amazon are on the link below:
    geni.us/DugatoFanBrushSet
    Small Round Sable
Series 7 size ‘0’ Winsor and Newton Finish Round Sable (lovely small brush but more expensive than synthetic): geni.us/Series7WinsorandNewton
A cheaper alternative to the series 7 round sable is: Size 00 Winsor and Newton Cotman Round
    geni.us/CotmanRound00
    Mixing Brushes
Jasart 577 brushes Size 12 - for mixing brushes - you can get any hogs hair brushes you might use for oil paints. Very cheap! The link below is for a set of oil paint filberts which are perfect!

Other brushes you could get to help with your watercolours
    Rigger Brush

It's great to see the 'effervescent' Scott back this week, as you haven't seemed yourself over the last few weeks. Thank-you Scott! I not only appreciate your talent, but I'm so grateful for your teaching as well. I'm not formally trained. I'm definitely trying to understand and learn the making of a great piece of art through composition, values and shapes etc. just like you! Every one of your videos increases my understanding and I'm excited every time I look to see if the notification bell has a new tutorial from you. Thank-you for your generous heart! If it's okay with you I have a question about another video of yours here on CZcams? I'm sorry I don't remember the title, but it was for beginners. During the tutorial you had the reference photo in the top left/right hand side of the screen. It was very helpful to see that. I know the reference is only meant as a guide, but it was very cool to see what you were observing(another skill I'm trying to learn) and the decisions you were making to have a great outcome. I just loved that! I was wondering if you might be able to incorporate this in future videos. Thank-you again! P.S. My apologies for this being too wordy. :-)

A fantastic tutorial! Very practical, with great technique tips. Love how you are mixing your watercolours directly on the white bench top. What is the bench top? White laminate or melamine? And I notice you use 3M tape for both sticking down the 300gsm watercolour paper and to do straight lines in the watercolour. is that the tape you're using, 3M magic (or invisible tape)? Your large flat brushes, are they best in goat's hair?

    • @ScottSwinson
      @ScottSwinson  Před 2 lety +2

Thanks Sue!! Pretty cool! The difference is the Holbein hakes seem to have softer goat hair and have a bit less which in my eyes makes it easier to control the amount of water/pigment moving onto the page. And the softness makes it easier to paint a layer over the top of an existing layer with out disturbing it! 👍👍
