I quite enjoyed painting this watercolour. It is interesting what comes into your mind as you paint and see things in the watercolour. One of my Patron's has been painting some beautiful seascapes with yachts in them and I think that is how that popped into my mind when I saw this seascape.
    Paper:
This was painted on a half sheet (38cm x 56cm) of Rives BFK etching paper, white, 280gsm, 100% cotton rag, acid free paper.
    Paints:
The colours used were: (all colours used are Winsor and Newton Artist Quality Tubes of Watercolour)
    Yellow Ochre
    Raw Umber
    Burnt Umber
Mix of Cobalt Blue and Light Red
Mix of Winsor Blue (red shade) and Light Red
Dr Ph Martins Bleed Proof White
    Brushes:
    2 Inch Holbein Hake Brushes
1 Inch Hake Brushes both Ron Ranson and Holbein
Angled Shader Taklon 3/8 by J.Burrows for lifting out the boat
5/16 Short Flat Jasart nylon for lifting out the boat
Series 7 Round sable for the boat
    Other:
MDF board to attach the paper to
3M Scotch Magic Tape (green packet) to attach paper to the board
    Spray bottle
Razor to lift out light in the sail but really didn't need to do this
Tweezers to pick up any hairs from the hake brushes
Tissues to clean up water and lift out light of the yacht

Probably best to source this from your local store so you can look after the paper and not have it posted unless you are buying a large amount of paper and it will be looked after. I just finished a watercolor of a house appearing out the mist and re-watching your spectacular ‘sailboat in a storm’ video reminded me of multiple things I did ‘wrong’. But the most significant mistake is that I made the house too big. The thing I love about watercolor is the ability to create credible, emotional atmosphere. I got the sky and reflections working pretty well, then I put this too large house in. I’m going to try again with a smaller house and trees. You, Tony Smibert and JMWTurner all keep most of your ‘reality’ details very small, thereby allowing the atmospherics to dominate the painting. Your corrections are also interesting. That slash of light (where the sailboat is) you removed was of particularly instructive. I need to be bolder with corrections. Anyway, thanks again for a brilliant video.

I recently went to the JMW Turner exhibit at the Kimbell in Fort Worth, Texas. This painting of yours is so gorgeous and is as equally impressive as any one of Turner’s on exhibit!! The composition and drama of this reminds me of Turner’s style in many of his oil paintings. I know he did watercolor as well, but to me it’s so impressive how you achieved this kind of drama with watercolor as he did with his oil paintings. Just so amazing and stunning. I just love your work. Cheers!
