    What a wonderfully, personable visit to a majestic property! While stationed at RAF Chicksands in the 70's, I was fortunate to be able to tour some of the local, historic, family homes.
    This is a very pleasant remembrance of those days so many decades ago. Cheers, Dick from Vancouver.

      I think this is still true today. The scale and viewpoint we have of it may be different, but whilst some live in undiscribable luxury the masses gaze upon via our electronic gadgets, many people can't afford both, rent and food, to a satisfactory extent. I wonder what we are learning from History, fundamentally. I am in awe of the artistic and artisanal achievements of all eras, and I will never not believe that there is actually the possibility of a decent and free life for everyone. Probably our priorities need to shift a little more to achieve this. Wishing you well 🌟

    What the heck is a telephone point in a tree root? How did it work?

    • @littleloner1159
      @littleloner1159 Před rokem

      Not an expert here but back then house internal telephone was quite popular for the big manors
      I'm not entirely sure how it worked but there were different lines going to different rooms in the house so you could easily speak to someone 15 rooms over
      But again don't know terribly much besides that it existed and i think it isn't quite like actual telephone but that's just wild speculation

      Not in the Victorian era, at least for upper class formal dinners. You were supposed to converse with the persons on either side of you and not to someone on the other side of the dining table. Of course, times have changed. Many people dine off fast food wrappers rather than plates and what's the use of a table when you have a lap.

    29:58 - I'm afraid it doesn't have to do with genes, just with being an idle heir to a fortune you didn't work a day in your life for, and being bored and wasteful. Putting the fruits of other, underpaid people's labor into useless junk to put in cabinets and on coffee tables.

    • @Luboman411
      @Luboman411 Před rokem +6

      Yep. In earlier times he would've said it was "God's will" that he was able to lord it over the peasants, collecting expensive, useless junk. But you can't use "divine right" as a socially-acceptable excuse anymore. So "genes" became the next best thing. Sounds more "scientific." LOL.

    • @chrishall744
      @chrishall744 Před rokem

      I really don’t think you can call these people “ idle heirs!” In fact their genes do play a very big part in their story.
      If they were simply idle, they would not be where they are today. Many great estates during the 19tb and 20th century fell into ruin due to bad business plans or families not moving with the times.. However, the Rothschilds are clearly doing something right.
      Also the British Aristocracy are part and parcel of our culture. Without them we would not have such a rich architectural history, which is envy of the world.
      We can’t judge history with todays standards.
