Test Drive in the Porsche Boxster Spyder - A GT4 Without a Roof!

- My first test drive in the new Porsche Boxster Spyder, the top-of-the-line version of the 981 Boxster platform, featuring the Carrera S' 3.8l Flat-6 engine and a 6-speed manual gearbox just as per my Cayman GT4.
With a manual roof mechanism to save top-weight, there is no question the new Spyder is a lot of fun to drive so a huge thanks must be extended to itswhitenoise for allowing me the use of the car around LA!

We are so happy you enjoyed our Spyder whilst you were in LA, we seriously do love the Spyder it just fits the California perfectly. It is just like a topless GT4 and it's a whole lotta fun with the roof down! Glad you enjoyed our other cars too, great job on the video as always.
I think the back of the Spyder with the humps is the best looking of all the Porsche back ends.
Drove this from Germany to Monaco last year. The sound is much louder in reallife. What an experience!

@Shmee - it uses the X73 sports suspension which is an option on the GTS. NOT the standard suspension on the GTS which is magnetic and 20mm higher. X73 is fixed rate springs and lower and stiffer.

The Boxster Spyder is an amazing machine; we will, however, be firming up the suspension before long and getting proper rubber on it and look forward to your re-review. FWIW, it dyno'd the same as our GT4 (amazingly so) and the 11 kilos saved a bit of weight, but importantly, it lowered the CG (mentally for sure):-)

Sport and Sport Plus ONLY stiffen up the engine mounts and change the accelerator mapping and ESC slip percentage. The suspension is static and fixed.

What is a "ceramic layer" on the paint? The car does look filthy - including the interior. But regardless - thanks for the vid - this car is on my list at the moment (looking for a mid engine, rear drive drop top).
Love the spider not too keen on it with the lid up but that's the same for most convertibles,unless it's a tin top then it's too heavy so ruins it anyway so you can't win really.
And i thought the 2015 Boxter 2,7 was a sweet car. The Boxter spyder must be close to perfection if not perfection!

You mentioned the paint had a ceramic coating? Can you give more info on that? Is that somewhat like the paint film protection you put on your Maclaren? Cost?

+Shmee150 I'm sure it's a very potent car but I've just always thought that the Boxter's lacked a bit of drama, like they were the black sheep of the line up but with this model they've really nailed it. They added the bit of (in my humble opinion) "excitement" needed to the 981 line up with the Boxter Spyder and the Cayman GT4.
I guess you haven't driven one then... Even the 987 with its hydraulic rack is one of the best sports driving experiences available
+MassiveGlove I have not and my previous comment is purely based on my thoughts of the looks and the design of the Spyder and GT4 models. I have no doubt that the driving experience is a bliss, even in the older Boxter/Cayman models.

I'm pretty sure the gt4 has sport plus but because you didn't buy the sport chrono pack with your gt4 it didn't come with sport plus

GT4 also has Sport Plus, you just need the Sport Crono pack which you don't have it optioned.
Wait. Shmee doesn't have sport crono? How is that even an option on the GT4...
Actually on the GT4 the Chrono package only gives you the watch (obviously) and the Track precision. Sport Plus along with auto rev matching comes standard with the GT4.
Spyder has Sport Plus and Sport Chrono also.

It seems like the Boxster Spider would be a good investment for all the same reasons as the GT4 was. Especially being a convertible. Just a thought....

+Rebasepoiss The Spyder actually has the x73 suspension as the only option and is lower then the standard setup by 20mm, the x73 is an "optional" suspension for the gts
which has pasm as standard. It also has the same custom rear setup as the gt4 but not the front gt3 suspension. It also has the 911S brakes and the tighter 911 Turbo steering rack.
How much better is the GT4 than a GTS?
Always funny to see that the Opel GT Roadster got criticized because of its roof mecanism whilst the Spyder gets away with it. Essentially it is a 1to1 copy of the GT Roadster's (Saturn Sky Redline) system, but it's not surprising considering that the 987 generation Spyder was a fail in that regard.
Beautiful but I prefer the unnecessarily complicated roof operation of the old one, it made it feel special like a lamborgini murcielago spider

Put it in 3rd - rev as if you would change to 4th - but just step off and it bangs like a machine gun. Do it in a tunnel and you will think it was a V12 Ferrari!

Why do so many roofless cars loom so bad with the roof on?
Only a professional driver on a track could tell the handling difference between the Spyder and GT4 - that is, the Spyder is fractionally quicker due to the weight saving
+Matthew Hall Incorrect. There isn't greater rigidity of the GT4 since the roof was never an integral part of the car's stiffness. The car was designed as a roadster.
There are several differences. First of all, the GT4 has wider tires. 295 out back where the Spyder has 265. Secondly, the GT4 gets the GT3's front suspension.
The Spyder gets the 911 Turbo's steering rack and the Carrera S brakes.
Of course, there is also the wing, but I don't know how much downforce it creates.
Would probably go for this over the GT4.
