I can remember being on scene and hearing the siren on our engine taking forever to wind down like this one. The brake on our siren was broken and back in those days if the county didn't have the funds to repair or replace it then you just had to make due with what you did have, unlike today where they just buy a whole new unit and the budget operates in a deficit.
That is just fantastic. I love it, and it brings back such great memories. I used to work for an armored truck company in Los Angeles, and the old rigs from the 60' s and early 70's had these on the roof. I remember a box in the mechanics area that had a whole bunch of these in the box. Just needed wiring fixed or whatever. He let some employee take the box home. Back then you just ordered a new one and it took a month to get . LOL Those were the days.
@barmtrail I hear alot of those stores when it comes to vintage lights and sirens, I just hate when that story ends with "we just threw them away" if only they knew how sought after these cool vintage things would be in a few years...
Excellent siren! Well done video! Creates a RESULTANT frequency far lower than the two actual tones. That low resultant frequency may penetrate vehicles better. Let's hear it down to rotor stop. Also move to the side so we can see rotor.
I can only remember seeing one ambulance with the light/siren combination when I worked on the ambulance in the 70s. It was not the double tone siren so most likely the Federal C6b. We only had one other ambulance that had a Propello Ray mounted on top between the steady red tunnel lights. This was on a Superior Cadillac 51 inch coach. The rotator on most of the rigs for a few years was the simple two bulb Tripp Lite red beacon. In those days I worked for both Schaefer and Goodhew Ambulance

Better sound on this than todays sirens that sounds like a flipper game.
If I'm not mistaken, that is a Propello-Ray light. The whole light/lens/bulb is spun by a small motor in the housing. I have a Model 78 siren with that light and it does the same thing even when the light isn't on.
I grew up hearing the dual tone model 76 siren in San Francisco in the 1960's. The fire chief's cars had them. Federal made these with their distinctive tone so people could differentiate special emergency vehicles. This was from their catalog well into the 1970's. Beautiful tone!
Some electro-mechanical sirens like this one have a clutch system that allow the rotor to spin independantly from the stator or middle portion of the siren. As long as the rotor bearing is broken in nicely it'll coast for a very long time. Adversely if the bearing is worn out or rusted from years of use..It'll coast/wind down poorly.
Actually no. The propello-ray uses the smaller sealed beam bulb. This is the larger one. I forget the size. This light could be hooked up for use as a steady burn light or hook a flasher to it to make it "flash".
A Q siren is one of the most used electro mechanical sirens onn fire trucks. Just search for Q siren and you will find tons of interesting vids of using it, i also reccoment going to rotoray's channel and checking out his vids. They are great with tons of Q use.
@FarmingtonNHFire My older brother sold his 67 vette for 1500 his 409 impala super sport for 2000...Do you want me to go on? Nobody from the 60 or 70's knew that all the cool stuff we grew up with would be worth anything. Atleast my younger brother knew. He saved all his comics, and purchased a 68 GT mustang with the HIPO 390 from our neighbor for 200 bucks, and he still has it to this day!!....But most of us just didnt even think about it.
When I was growing up, I distinctly remember the FD Ambulance (Emergency Unit) had this dual tone siren. It was a huge red Diamond Rio Van. I would love to find a picture of it but can't find one. (River Forest, IL Fire Department)
Sorry, not the stator.. Independently from the armature. As you can tell the whole thing is along learning process if there is'nt anyone around to school you on the topic. As in my situation.
No, sorry. I'll be mounting her on my next vintage emergency vehicle.

ive got a federal signal unitrol siren or what ever the name is on it. its mounted in my crown victoria thats used for blood runs in sweden. Its not like this one.
Haha, i love how the lens rotates when you spool it up. Beautiful sounding!
loved the lens rotation during the high crank

Wow, i like the long coast on this Model 78! Sounds very good.

Sweeeeet! Like that old "two-tone" Federal. Thanks.
My favorite siren...have one that needs fixin' actually. Gotta do it. Love the way your lens creeps around with the high vibration.

I have this exact model, play it every new year for the neighbors... Oh I am sure they love it!!!
ohhh ok. yeah, it IS a shame they don't make them anymore... thnx for the clarifacation!
It reminds me of the sirens in those creepy horror movies. Its almost remeniscent of a dual tone air raid siren actually... I think I like it though.
It's funny how the siren's force actually moved the light face at 0:36!
Excellent siren!

I hear ya Sister! I'm glad your enjoying the real sirens of yesteryear!!
Interesting spin on this classic siren :)
thanks 911caddy
Gotcha! I stand corrected. I will have to get a clip of my siren up. It has a Propello-Ray in it and it still works.

A buddy of mine has one of these on an old emergency truck that he restored

Yeah, It's very easy on the ears. The FS Double tone siren came to be in the mid to late 1930's.

@robertgift , Sorry. This siren back into service on a local FD Engine.. I hope to capture that in the near future. Timing is everything!
Oh yeah! You had to ease off the siren half a mile before you hit the hospital zone because it wound out so long. Ah the 'ol days...
thats so cool.....
Great siren!
51Suburban, the "b" stands for brake. Like many things with these sirens.. It was an option.

No worries! I'd love to see and hear your siren in action!!
sounds like a flight alarm on speed.
@911caddy awesome!!!!! so much the better!
@Kenster1025 , affermative. If I had the time to hook up a wire for power and flasher it would have been better. Next time!
yeah its kinda loud and i do blood and organ runs. i don`t see the organs or blood. They are in a seald coolbox in the entire transport.
Indeed!!
Sounds like a ACA Screamer S-10 Siren to me
Anyone notice the lens?
Just wondering does the siren light actually work?
How much does one of these run?
what is the difference between this siren and the 78b ?
sounds good! but it must eat up those bulbs from vibration @0:35,the bulbs shifts from vibration :P
does that have like 2 rotators? i think it's very nice... in a harmonic sort of way.
Is the lens supposed to move like that?
Was this model around in 1946?
Or do you know what have might been around at that time that looked and sounded like this 77L?
These sirens are no longer available new.. You can find them on eBay. The cost varies from 200.00 to 450.00ish usd.
Good luck with it!

would you be willing to entertain a price and a trade for this siren?
Unitrol is a decent siren box! Just blood runs.. Or organs too? Sounds kinda nasty:)
dual stators 5 stars
