  • Howdy fellow adventurers, Do you like odd, interesting and niche boats? Me too!
    In this video we check out the Nimble Vagabond 20. Made in Florida (to this day) the Vagabond was an odd duck in a fleet of odd ducks. Almost as big around as she is long--with a giant cuddy and cabin. She's truly a mission specific boat designed to get from skinny water spot to skinny water spot (even if Mobile Bay is in the way) at 6 knots tops. If you get in a rush, she'll squat faster than Wavey at bath time.
    Those familiar with the Nimbles most likely know about the Nomad (link below) arguably the most popular model (I had one) but honestly, I prefer the Vagabond for her closed-in bow and cuddy-cabin design. What do y'all think?

    Brent, I’ve got to say it again, you’ve got the gift of finding the coolest stuff. I think this boat has so much potential. It does look to have an explorer look about it. This would be cool traveling up the Amazon, Congo, or Mekong River….. drinking gin and beer, smoking cigars, catching malaria or anyone of those fun tropical ailments (anything but the COVID-19… I’m going on three months dealing with that 💩). Anyhow this boat is great. I guess you could sell that 50hp, recoup some of your purchase and get a smaller engine. Good luck as always!

    I’m sure you already know this, but this would be the perfect boat to explore Florida. I read a article about a Nimble Kodiak pilot house. They was the 26ft motor sailor model. Had a small 15hp inboard diesel. All Nimbles are Shoal draft boat designed by Ted Brewer. This guy sailed one to the Bahamas and spent the winter island hoping. The extra 6ft made a big difference from the pictures I seen. But he claims they are very safe even in rough conditions. I believe they are foam filled between the inner and outer hulls on all Nimbles. Kinda like a Carolina Skiff.
    I think everyone is excited for the Beagle barge adventure. I think you would be much more comfortable exploring the south with the barge. But I can see where hooking up the Nimble and heading to Florida could be a plan B. And I totally agree 50hp is way to big. A 25-30hp would be perfect even going up stream with a 20ft boat with basically a flat bottom. This boat is perfect for exploring the Manatee River at my place, or anywhere around Tampa bay.
    Good luck with the adventure. A lot of people are watching. You are a inspiration to many..

    Thank you for the tour, I hadn't seen the Vagabond before. I purchased a Nimble Nomad a year ago and have been upgrading it for the same type of river use. I've added hydraulic steering, new electronics, composting head, new Suzuki 9.9 OB. I'm also in Michigan in Rogers City. I don't think I'd venture across Superior with it but planning a lot of smaller lake time.

    • @backwatersandbackroads
      @backwatersandbackroads  Před 2 lety

      Hi William! That's Northern lower peninsula if not mistaken? The nimbles are very capable of big water. I plan on taking mine to Isle royale this summer (80 mile open water crossing) they are hard to mount a secondary motor to, but the right dinghy with the right motor can make up for that. Also, I would put at least a 20 hp 4 stroke on your nomad (25-30 would be better) a 9.9 will have to max out or close to it to achieve and maintain hull speed (which is only 5-7 knots) a 20-30 will idle along, and give you HP to fight current (important on river travel) the 50 I have on the vagabond is a little too much, but I can idle around at hull speed all day sipping fuel and basically putting no wear on the motor. If I ever come across a good deal on a 20-30 4 stroke with power trim/start/controls I will probably swap out. I hope to see you out there. --Brenton

      @@backwatersandbackroads One of the better features of the Suzuki 9.9 which I purchased is that it is easily upgraded to 15 or 20 hp. I always have heard that an OB should be run in it's power range so I replaced my 40 HP. I'll see this summer. I'm enjoying reading your posts. I think they still make them? (not the vagabond, unfortunately). They have the fancy Wanderer, Nomad and Kodiak for sale, I think. I like the outboard concept on a displacement hull for sure. Nice little boat. The Nomad, with the open bow, probably wouldn't be a great open water boat. You do have a knack for collecting niche boats. Sell the 50 it is way too much in weight and power. I'd like to see you try a 9.9 four stroke, high thrust. I think you'd like the economy and the power is more than you'd expect. Most comment how our 9.8 is not enough until they are in the boat and see us move first hand. We even buck fast current! Remember the hull does not draw much so requires very little power. The tapered stern is ideal for low power! PS I want that steering wheel! If it was me, this would be an ideal cruiser. I'd add a canopy and zippered side screens/cloth so the cockpit becomes the living room! Enjoy!

    • @backwatersandbackroads
      @backwatersandbackroads  Před 2 lety

      Roy! Yeah...the 50 is definitely overkill...a 25-30 would be fine. I'm not sure a 9.9 would turn around in the Mississippi or beat up against pickwick dam. Certainly enough to steer down the rivers and slack waters. I like the tapered stern, following seas just go around you :) If you want this wheel...it's yours! Seriously....email me :)

      The nimbles are famous for having a chalky finish for some reason, no matter how much you buff, they get a film on them again. If you find the former owner's channel (not hard, type in the boat name here on YT) you'll see he buffed it out...didn't do much. I think it's gives it that rugged Indiana Jones look...just wait until you see the roof rack I'm putting on it :)
