The SK award has lost its prestige and respect of late, with mediocre artistes being selected in recent years. Which is a shame.
Apart from Sanjay you are correct
It is not to discredit the academy, but based on the array of those who are selected for this award versus others, it is clear that it should not make much of an impact in listeners mind. I go by which singers and performers I would recommend for listening to anyone including my kids, and I am sorry to say that many of the recent kalanidhis are nowhere in my list.

Since Many years Sangeetha Kalanidhi award is not given to Instrument Veena , Great Artists like Padmavathy Ananthagopalan Maami and many more are still not given...
An award which has not been bestowed on Shri Lalgudi Jayaraman, Mandolin Shri U. Srinivas, Shri S. Balachander, Smt. E. Gayathri leaves a lot to be explained on the selection process.. A loss to the Award, not to the Artists..
I would like to add the names of ShrI OST, Hyd brothers... to that list :(

The criteria seems to be consistency of perf, vidwat, bringing in new audiences, special expertise etc.... and I think they dont give posthumous awards. LGJ not getting, is politics and he himself declined when it was awarded. Not sure about other artistes listed here...
Every prestigious award becomes controversial over a period of time.
It is interesting that several people work hard to select a candidate. What we know is that they never got it right...

TMK doesn’t deserve this award. We’ve all seen the respect he has for this art form.
If there was an award for pseudo-intellectual / communist, he will win it. And he has.
Jayashree is next. She recently also won the Yogam Nagaswami Award!!!
If there was a award for cunning fox🦊 it should go to tm Krishna, he is not deserving this awards

Sri Vijay Siva is a very deserving candidate for Sangitha Kalanidhi. His Sanatana Dharma scriptural knowledge, straightforward purist ideals and unadulterated music and wisdom is truly rare in this time, when most artistes stray away, becoming atheists.

So, it is Murali instrumental in elevating the anarchist crackpot to the postion. An academy got itself discredited by not awarding this kalanidhi to MDR
Looks like some kind of elite club, Carnatic music itself is stolen from Pillais' as well as Chathur Aattum and the temples. Same folks awarded a silver hammer to MKT. Nathaswaram and Thavil are unclean, one is blown with a mouth other one has animal skin on it, while mridangam and flute are exempted.
Elite club ? Do you know Purandara Dasa, Anamayya and the Dasas, Azhwars and Nayanmars - cut out the crap of things being stolen. You should be grateful that there are people working hard to keep a tradition alive.
Why is the academy not adequately recognizing the upapakka vaadya vidwans?
Now-a-days the coveted title of Sangitha Kalanidhi is being conferred on unsuitable artists. Politics castetism nepotism what not plays spoil sport and degraded this super most title. Vidwans and Vidhushis like Vyjayanthimala Karaikudi Mani Yesudoss Valayapatti Subramaniam E Gayathri Kamala Lakshman and other eminent artists had been denied because of favouritism chauvnism etc.

Just story telling
There are many senior artists like Trichur Narendran sir and Palghat T R Rajamanisir who deserves these awards. Unfortunately very young artists are getting these awards. There’s no real explanation. Why academy is not keeping its standard?
Age should not be the consideration. A deserving candidate should be bestowed with the SK title when it is due even at an young age if the artist is really very talented & able to render meritorious service to the Carnatic Music.
Politics nothing else determines sangita kalanidhi
SriTMK and Bombay Jayashree are beyond Awards.They are class
Acknowledging the divinity (as per Hindu Shaastras) is a pre-requisite.

@@dparamful yes. My personal preference is though for deeper voices like Aruna Sairam, T Brinda etc. Not saying others are bad, just my preferance. Same goes for Male vocals, feel that after Yesudas. many preferred "soft voiced" and the booming Chembai, Aryakudi & Narayana Swami are hard to find nowadays.
