Man, I'm so bad at RTS games, but a family member bought this for me when I was a kid. I never got past the first few campaign levels, and didn't have anybody to play against. So I would design my own maps which stacked the odds in my favour, then slowly build up my base and all the most powerful units before crusading the map and wiping out all my enemies. Now that I think about it, I was really lame but man those are some good memories.
may you didn't know that it was available to "cheat" the game
by editing the campaign levels in the games own editor...

no you couldn't edit the campaign maps in any way but you COULD make/edit your own custom maps for skirmish/multiplayer mode using the built in map editor.
MegaRazorback if you don't install patches or the addon you can edit the campaign maps! I did that! May you missed to make the full installation and remove the writeprotection from the mapfiles.
And the ingamemapeditor lost its functionality to edit campaign maps after the installation of the addon...

nope, i did the full installation with NO patches when i first got the game all those years ago and still couldn't edit the campaign maps....i didn't have the expansion pack either so yeah, either you remember it wrong or you're lying.

That's cool to know! I think another soundtrack that I believe uses the same orchestral expansion board is the soundtrack for Quake's mission packs Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity.

Man, I rember when this game came out like yesterday. It got great reviews and there was quite some hype. A friend bought it back then, but wen couldn't really grasp its potential. Looking back, I honestly think this game was way to ahead of its time: special abilities like phase, self-destruct or morph (like the scarabs) needed micro that the interface could not provide. Its implementation of true line of sight and different terrain types that affect unit vision and movement were groundbreaking.Also, Its campaign really had a good learning curve, although I had to get some tricks and hints to master it. Nevertheless, always again a challenge to play it.
Somehow I did show and tell with this game as a kindergartner and talked about the game, ending my presentation with saying "the future is war". I just wanted to let the internet know this really happened.

I was hooked to this game, when I was still a kid. The music, tense atmosphere, the dystopian war between the faction. And freeking realistic sounds and effects. I was mindblown by the expensive tank that destroys itself and creates a gravitational kind of wave.
I recently began playing it again. Having so much fun. The game still lives up today if you do some small adjustments.

With one word...NOSTALGIA... I was 10 when i first played this game and i loved it so much! (in fact im downloading it again right now :D). This and Aztec Wars!
lol! Had the family relatives old pc with windows 95 tearing it up on a Sunday afternoon when I was 10 too.

All I remember about this game was that like the 3rd or 4th level of the campaign was ROCK hard and it kept me from finishing it for a long time until I finally managed to like 5 years later lol

Many times has the Freedom Guard heard the hiss of my Tachion Tanks quietly approaching, only to quickly feel the blast of heat and screams of the injured when a dozen of these open fire on their puny base.
@he11b1ade i think it was a sort of advance plasma based weapon like the weaker but still advanced Plasma tank.

Track 6...what I dub Freedom Guard Theme. Just listen to it...several points it kicks up and you can just see the Freedom Guard kicking ass!!
22:18 is when it starts and you can just see Jeb Radec (Freedom Guard Commander) taking to the field, fighting alongside his men and just trashing the Imperium.
The Triple Rail Hover tanks crashing into Imperium Plasma Tanks and laying waste to standard Imperium armor, the Freedom Guard snipers & Spider Bikes massacring Guardians and Bions. The Raiders hitting hard from out of no-where once they turn off their Phase cloaks, the Freedom Guard airbikes come in making attack runs along with their Outriders.
It dies down and you can see more Bions pouring in countering their air along with the Tachion Tank, the Imperium Heavy Armor which destroys the Triple Rail Hover tank in a one on one fight.
That moment you realize you know the lore of a game a little TOO well. lol
Speaking of the Freedom Guard...Guess what the Martyrs are, suicide bombers that have either hit the age of 25 and that means they are almost certain to die the next time they go out to fight (the Imperium side tends to target the older soldiers with more "experience" under their belts or as they are called amongst themselves, the "Marked" as they know that the Imperium will target them over a greener soldier) OR are not well liked by their commanding officers and "volunteered" for the job BEFORE their 25th birthday as a way to get "rid" of them permanently.
They are then given a vest loaded with concussive plasma detonators all wired up to a single button and they go screaming out into the battlefield to either take out a group of Imperium soldiers/vehicles or are are killed on the way, the detonators are VERY unstable and well the slightest damage to them is enough to set them off prematurely, damaging/destroying anything nearby, even fellow Freedom Guard soldiers.

The Martyr was seen as the most honorable way to die to the Freedom Guard. It all spawned due to ONE Raider who was wounded and waiting on medics...who was 24 years of age.
Marked die upon turning 25, or they get a little bit more time...months at most.
Jeb Radec was marked as well, but did not die when he turned 25...many believed him to be superhuman due to this.
I know the entire lore of Dark Reign, I've read the entire story...several times.
The Martyers were a serious problem for the Imperium. The Shadow Hand did provide an answer, not one that is very practical in the game however.
Also no, the Imperium tended to not get bogged down in major fights - because the Freedom Guard used hit n run tactics unless Radec was the commander...at which point the Imperium would literally get trashed, and the only commander that best him was demoted to captain and guard supply trains...the Imperium was corrupt and dirty...Freedom Guard, not so much.

Freedom Guard soldiers who are approaching their 25th birthday, and therefore certain death, are outfitted with a high-powered explosive device and then sent screaming into the enemy to die for the cause. Sometimes soldiers not popular with their commanding officers are "volunteered" for this service before their 25th birthday.
Yes it might be an honor for the martyrs but a LOT of them are actually troops that the commanding officers "dislike" and want them "removed" from their sight in more...permanent fashion.

@@SoulKiller7Eternal Thing is, the ORIGINAL manual that came with the game has the EXACT. SAME. QUOTE...I should know as im looking at my original copy right now and yep, the thing i quoted from the wikia is ripped right from the manual ITSELF.

@@ThieflyChap I'll check it out. But my argument will be this soundtrack fits the universe that this game created. In my opinion its matches very well with the game play and adds to the atmosphere.
It was my first PC game ever. And still it is my the most favourite game. There is fun site of this game. There are online severs so you can play online and also it is possible download modified release so it is possible to run it on win Vista, 7, 8, and 10. Of course original CD is needed to launch those modified releases. So if you want to travel back in time try www.darkreign.ws/. May be we meet there:)

haha, when I was a kid, I used to think the martyr's lines included, "WANT SOME EGGS?!" followed by maniacal laughter. This might have been influenced by my strong hatred for (and disgust with) the taste of eggs (I suspect I had a case of conditioned taste aversion when I was very very young).

This was the first RTS game I ever played. I played the demo to death! Then I got the full game... and played that to death too! :D For me this was always better than C&C. (Not that they're not brilliant). I recently reinstalled the game and... boy were my skills rusty. I was ashamed of myself. T_T

Das klappt nur mit einer VM wie Virtual Box zum Bleistift....
(In Win 10 braucht man keine VM um das ganze zu Emulieren... )
Auf der VM muss dann ein Win 95 / 98 mit einem "passenden" Direct X aufgesetzt werden, sofern du noch Original CDs hast.

It was basicly a Win95 Game
so you need some emulation.
there's only 1 version left now and it's GOG for windows. So you might as well get that and run windows on your mac.

The game can be cobtained virtually on GoG
or in discversion on ebay or amazon
(Green Pepper NOT recommended music missing!)
The discversion also needs "old" hardware and software settings a VM by the way,
but VMs eat up a lot of resources....
And for common the savedisc 1 copyprotection
needs some special drives to be installed on "newer"
windows versions (NT and everything above)
before the discversion operates properly.
The tracks can be downloaded by JDownloader
and converted with tools like Audacity or Formatfactory for example.
