  • Is your truck sluggish or have poor acceleration? Maybe your truck has a rough idle or is hard to start. If yes, then you need to do an ignition tune up. In this video, I show you how to replace the distributor cap and rotors, and the Ford Motorcraft spark plugs and 8mm spark plug wires. I also show you a few tricks, like using anti-seize, proper plug gapping, special spark plug socket from Gearwrench, and lastly the spark plug wire pulling pliers.

Dialectic grease does more than just protect the electrical connection. It also seals out moisture when applied to the boots and makes it much easier to remove the wires later as they won’t stick to the plugs like dry wires do over time.

    • @TheMinuteMasters

The only help I can offer is that if your engine is rebuilt there should be a label indicating so on the underside of the motor. I don't remember exactly where just I remember noticing it when I was under my truck one time. If your motor wasn't rebuilt (at least not by Ford) and was simply swapped with a junkyard or donor truck motor I'm not sure how you would tell. Definitely check the forums and see if anyone else has had this question.

Check to make sure all of your spark plug wires are going to the correct terminals on the distributor. If you mixed one up, it could cause this issue. If that doesn’t fix it, then you’ll have to check each wiring plug one by one.

It’s hard to say. I think I did my last tuneup and 2017. The Haynes manual says you should do a tuneup every 30,000 miles for I think it’s three years. It’s definitely over those two.

@@TheMinuteMasters Ford Tech told me yrs ago on the 5.0 Foxbody Mustangs that the Plug Wires usually go bad before the plugs. ? My 95 F150 5.0 seems to run better with Motorcraft Copper, even with the the MSD Coil.

@@bobbywren123 I would believe that. The plugs I took out looked dirty but they certainly didn’t look damaged. I’ve swapped wires before and I felt like it’s improved ignition.

It will usually start from Relay, while in park with key turned forward using a screwdriver touching both bolts on the Relay on Fender next to Battery. If it starts then you know it's probably the Starter going out or Ground Wire.

You don't gap your plugs with the disc tool by prying on it with the disc... you gap them with the hole in the disc. It will just touch the posts and won't damage your plugs. Learn to use it correctly, it's not a bad tool. Are there better? Yes. But it gets the job done as long as you don't mis-use it as you demonstrated.
