    Great tips, as always!
    I rarely edit weddings anymore but watched my last one back after watching this and was relieved I didn't make any of these mistakes 🎉
    If I get any extra weddings this year I'll be watching this video again :)

    I'm actually grateful for your advice about edit for people rather than details. It has served me well. I wish I could have you edit one of my videos, but can't afford music bed music. Thanks for all your advice and look forward to learning more important wedding videography tips from you in the future.

    The art of video editing isn't knowing what to put in; it's knowing what to leave on the cutting room floor.

    Slightly disagree on point 1. I agree avoid excessive detail up front BUT Both the bride and groom should have a cool entrance if possible. Too many modern wedding films start off the random shots of the B&G already together. That's too jarring to me, and seems to lack any storytelling at all. It's like starting the Wizard of Oz with Dorothy and all her weird friends already skipping down the yellow brick road. Cool entrances tend to work farther to closer for me. So: Shot 1 Drone in. Shot 2 any setting shot (weather on day-of, sign of the couple's name, mom adjusting a flower or cake etc..) Shot 3 slide reveal of bride in chair from distance. Shot 4 hand of makeup artist dipping brush in makeup. Shot 5 beauty close up reveal of bride's face getting finishes on lips, eyes etc. Have some showmanship!

    Hi Matt! Great video as always! =) I'm assuming that you are referring more to implementing these tips when editing HIGHLIGHT films or Short Films here? For longer doc edits (60 to 90 minutes in length) I try to keep things moving at a faster pace, but I'm pretty much including MOST of the ceremony and vows, ALL of the reception speeches etc. For a longer film like this I also include additional B-Roll and DRONE shots where appropriate, which helps to keep the video interesting. I'm finding that couples want to see more of their wedding day story than what I can offer them in a 5 -7 minute film. While some couples purchase all the RAW footage, others want a more professional and polished EDIT that shows them A LOT more of their day. I would love to see you do a video on LONG FORM edits, because they are so different from the shorter films we mostly see.

    Thanks Matt. love your advice for films. Editing might me the most important part, could always use more tips

    Regarding mistake 2, that could be another version for your add on package. Audience can feel bored But couple related people love long version. So You can make the 15mins highlight as an add-on.

      This. At the end of the day you were hired to perform a service for the couple and you need to make them happy. An unhappy couple will do much more damage to your brand than a meh video will. Audiences watching the film are usually friends and family of the couple who will be more invested in those moments too. But If you can sell the couple on a longform edit and a highlight edit that will help give you a bigger payday and give you something they will love and something you can use in your portfolio better.

    One thing I think we all struggle with is killing our darlings. There's many wedding shoots where I get a shot that I think is great, looks awesome, but then realize it doesn't fit into the edit well. Also there are times where the details and establishing shots feel like the best content in terms of how it looks, but at the end of the day it's about the couple and not the venue. That said you can try to use those excellent venue shots to connect with the venue and sell them the clips to use on their social media!

    I struggle in placing the shots in a video highlights. Most of my videos are in chronological order. It would be great if you can make a video around the strategies of stitching shots from different parts of the day to make the video more engaging.

    Thank you Matt for your funny way of teaching and putting examples. I even do not need the example errors been put to your video because I almost see them in mine :) It helped much.
    The bottom line for me = don't add B-roll or other hype shots in just because they are cool. And look after the pace. Nice!

  • @Arborealagenda
    @Arborealagenda Před 3 měsíci +2

    A microcosm of editing issues generally. You hint at it but audio of those vows need not be matched to the image and maybe there is a better use of some of those establishing shots and just other shots generally - does the timeline have to be strict? As for pacing, I am not a wedding videographer but I assume it can vary from slower to faster paced edits? The main thing is to establish the style early and stick to it. When it comes to drone shots, part of me never wants to see another one ever again! The de-humanised nature of them leaves me cold most of the time and they are now a massive cliche.

    I find it a little hard to weave the vows in seamlessly throughout the film, but I'll try next time

    Hey Matt, I was just wondering if you may have already done it but what will be really helpful is what are the things you do before the shoot day like what? What do the conversations with the bride and groom look like what questions are you asking? how are you setting up in a sense the storyboard before you begin shooting and what are some of the basic things you’re looking for when setting up your your shots and how you’re going to do this weddingthat allows you to be unique in each wedding but yet still have a basic. I hate to say it but formula for how you’re gonna go about it so it has basically a style let’s say each one.

    Hey matt, love your tips. Have you ever had a couple say, we want, basically all the things you said you shouldn't do? lol What would you do in that situation, since the video is for them, but not for others to see?
