    It's a liberating thing to get to a point where you don't feel like you have to justify liking something. Just liking it is enough.

    I feel that way about hardtails. I’m never going to ride something so difficult that it needs full suspension. One might make the trail easier, but it’s not required. Hardtails look infinitely cooler. And steel hardtails…🔥

    • @mtbboy1993
      @mtbboy1993 Před 2 měsíci +2

      For me full suspension makes a massive difference, cus my back does not get thrown out as easily, with a hardtail it gets thrown out, especially on rough stuff. So will work on rentestigning the back. So I won't ride a hardtail unless it's for city riding.

    For anyone considering a Marino full suspension right now... my order was put in Jan 28th and I just got a picture of my frame complete, ready to ship Feb 19th. So only about 3 weeks! not including shipping..

  • @sk8a
    @sk8a Před 2 měsíci +1

    It's why I like steel bikes as well. The look - thin tubes, fat rubber. Matched with a nice non suspension corrected modern geometry, that's the secret sauce! they were right first time around in the 70s klunker days. Only thing that needed to be changed was the brakes and the geometry!

    I built up a 1986 Specialized Allez frame with modern components and wheelset. The red frame with all the black and silver parts, especially the 35 mm deep aluminum wheels just looks amazing. I will say that this Allez rides so much smoother and comfortably than my full carbon bike ever has, and the Fulcrum Racing Quattro wheelset came off the carbon bike.

    • @richeeg3271
      @richeeg3271 Před 2 měsíci

      It's definitely possible that it rides smoothly, but there are many other factors that could effect this. For the example, I'd like to know, how much of exposed seat post do you have on these bikes? More seatpost showing usually means a comfier bike. Some people would go as far as to say that it makes the biggest difference

    • @richeeg3271
      @richeeg3271 Před 2 měsíci

      Also, what about wheels? Are wheels on the carbon bike deeper then 35mm? Usually the deeper, the stiffer. Oh and I forgot to mention; what kind of shape and material does the seatpost have? That too will most likely influence the ride quality more then the frame material itself

    • @johnnydoe66
      @johnnydoe66 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @richeeg3271 The wheelset came off the carbon frame, they're aluminum, 35 mm deep. I have about 6" of seatpost, it's the original, aluminum, and it's fluted on the sides. The Allez frame is Tange chromoly and made in Japan.

    • @richeeg3271
      @richeeg3271 Před 2 měsíci

      @@johnnydoe66 Okay, that's interesting, seems like the frame did make a lot of difference. Also, what kind of seatpost did the carbon bike have?

    Absolutely agree on the "i like the looks of steel frames". Personally i am not a fan of boxy aluminium frames or weirdly shaped carbon layups. Lugged steel it's where it's at for me. My most precious bikes are old road/rando excamples from the late 70ties/early 80ties.

  • @e.con0210
    @e.con0210 Před 2 měsíci

    There is no “compliance” in a triangle shape. But there is some vibration damping property inherent to steel that mutes some of the road buzz that aluminum passes through. And one can make the otherwise heavy steel frame lighter by double or triple-butting the down tube and seat tube (probably didn’t have in any of the bikes mentioned). Can also customize thinner seat stay tubing to make the rear triangle transmit less rear wheel buzz. Nowadays with 28-30mm supple tires (soft compound, 120+tpi thin side walls) run at 70psi with tpu inner tubes or sealant with no tubes, probably tires have as much of a dampening effect. Add to that dropped seat stays that expose a lot of seatpost for more damping (through post flexion) there.

  • @charlcoetzee93
    @charlcoetzee93 Před 2 měsíci +1

    I think it's easier to feel frame material differences on a road bike. A bit less overbuilt, and way less cushy tyres to hide road vibrations, so you if you often rode different bikes you can feel the difference. I have a flexy 90s steel road bike and it definitely has some give in it. If I pull the front brake and push the bike forward I can see the curved fork flex.

    @cibulino8604 Před 2 měsíci

    Absolutely agree with you - steel bikes look way cooler. I have 2 trail hardtails - Nukeproof Scout and steel Cotic BFE and the last one looks more sexy. But I would disagree with you about complience - aluminium bikes are harsher BUT there are so many other aspects like tire pressure, trail and etc.

  • @aznwierdone
    @aznwierdone Před 2 měsíci

    gotta admit, i'm in the same boat as you and likely much of the viewer base that steel bikes are cool is all aesthetic. i'd be unlikely to repair a broken frame, and certainly cant feel a difference.
    but the fact that carbon catastrophically fails is definitely one of the reasons i'd rather stick with metal.

    Steel bikes are my biking happy place. I’ve ridden carbon and aluminum framed bikes and some of those bikes were completely amazing. But, I always come back to steel bikes. I can’t even tell you why this is, but I know riding them makes me happy, so that’s what I ride.

    for me it´s the confidence that steel gives me to fuck up some jump or feature and to not think about my frame/fork integrity. guess it´s mostly psychological tho

    Love the big tires looks too, like the stridlsland journal builds for example, steel frame and 2.8" rubber arrrrghhhh😍

    I started out as a road bike racer in the early aughts, and after switching from a noodly, made in Italy, steel Bianchi bike, the popular thing was to go for Aluminum, since it was so much more efficient. From then on, I went with mid level alu frames and always rode 23C tires pumped to 100 PSI because that's just what you did back then. After I retired from racing, I finally started looking at HUGE 28C tires for comfort, but none of the normal road racing bikes fit those. I decided to treat myself and get the "magic carpet ride" of a steel bike built up with a Soma Tange Prestige frame/fork. It could take 28C tires, so I KNEW I was going to be in comfort heaven because of all the "vertical compliance" of steel. Right? RIGHT???
    I was lied to. After being on 4-5 different alu frame/carbon forked bikes, that steel frame/fork was the harshest riding thing I had ever felt, even if I lowered the 28C tire pressure to unheard of levels at that time. We're talkin down to the 70s PSI. XD
    I do have to admit though, I miss the look (and maybe feel, but it's been too long to remember) of that skinny tubed Bianchi road bike. I keep thinking I'll get around to building up a classic looking road bike of some sort, but I just don't want to put a bunch of money into something that's going to disappoint me again. There's a couple brands that are doing it right though and making steel frames with 32C and above tire sizing. Larger tires are going to help WAY more than any frame material will when it comes to comfort.
    But skinny steel frame bikes will always look better IMO, like you said.

    I was kind of hoping you'd say "because everybody else rides aluminium or carbon big brand bikes and it makes me feel more original that I'm the only person in the bike park that has a steel bike that nobody knows what it's called" because (and the irony is not lost on me) being original is kind of lonely lol. Anyway, cool sticker design!

  • @lenolenoleno
    @lenolenoleno Před 2 měsíci +2

    This 100%.
    There is no scientific jutification for steel being "more compliant".
    If a steel bike is less harsh it's becuse it has been designed to feel that way, whether it is carbon, aluminium, steel etc. Not inherently because of the material in and of itself.

    you mean those stupid RD hangers on every other bike that ultimately seems to cause problems. I'm sorry Crust but your hanger thing cost more than my RD
    my chromoly bikes have never NEEDED realignment.. the new to me 2016 Brodie Bolt is pretty decent as a daily.
    the 95 930 is great.. the 96 rocky mountain cardiac.. never once.. picked it out from a ditch and rebuilt it..
    my Norco indie 4.. and 7300fx.. hanger issues but operational.. the Giant Iguana and Gary Fisher Advance.... in the closet
    my 7300fx is actually by a large margin my lightest bike... it's a small frame 29er modded with a surly fork and some file work on the places that rubbed
