Just a placeholder image or colour test. The crisis was in the news at the time of the games development so they just picked a random image and it was from the crisis.

Halo Reach runs just fine with 4p splitscreen. I don't have SSB for Wii U, but I assume it works well with 8 players on one screen.

tbh having 8 players share a single screen is different than having 2+ screens running at once. The game has to render all the screens whereas 8 players on the same screen is just some additional models being rendered. That said, I not only love local multiplayer but also prefer split-screen to shared-screen - it is nice having a friend to play with locally but it is annoying as hell having your freedom cut off because of it (see GTA San Andreas and older LEGO games).
And lego Indiana Jones 2 has a splitscreen/one shared screen and it's annoying when you and your partner need to both be somewhere, and all you get is a hint from the orientation of the line dividing the screens.
This makes me remember how fucking amazing the gamecube Mario related games were. They were so ingenious while STILL using a controller. You don't need motion controllers or a touch screen to have interesting games. Love it.
That's because Nintendo HAD to do shit like DD because they couldn't just slap a gimmick on the controls and call it new.
It's why the Gamecube is my favorite console. So many good things on the Gamecube, yet Nintendo ignores it just cause it didn't do well against its competitors.
I saw some people claiming the GC is the last good console of Nintendo even though it was the worst sold console of N after Virtual Boy... Why people didn't buy it when it was 99 bucks is beyond me...
Oh and by the way, Galaxies games are near perfect and they use MC...

8 is an amazing game apart from the multiplayer arena stuff. Not quite up there with DD but a close 2nd to me.
The physics in Mario Kart 8 are just too dang perfect for me to not say it is my favourite.

I can only imagine how that image of the Beslan school hostage found its way into the files - personally, I sometimes save images that I find worthwhile or impressive on my desktop, and I'm guessing that someone on the developement team did the same. It is an emotionally strong image, after all. So when they needed a placeholder in the early process of the game, I could see them easily dragging an arbitrary image-file from their desktop into their program without giving it much thought.
After several hundred manhours put into the project, as well as a magnitude of other assets, it's probably really easy to forget you ever put in a placeholder like that.
I prefer that kind of explanation over the idea that some twisted indvidual worked on this childfriendly game and put in stuff like that as part of a dark little secret they had...
Fun fact: Double Dash was originally slower, but the speedometer showed higher numbers than the final release. By the time the game was released, the speed of the characters was raised, but the speedometer was lowered.

Nintendo, the company where we want to make a game about X, so we extensively research X, then realize that X wouldn't really be all that fun as a game, and then change X enough to make a fun game. I respect Nintendo for actually bothering to do research beforehand, and even more so for their ability to look at the information before them and say "hey, this is cool and all, but it's not really that fun in practice"

And it didn't work. I'm not sure if Nintendo felt the battle mode was getting stale, but completely reworking it was a bad idea. They should've tried to do what they did for Double Dash, and add extra battle modes besides the standard balloon battle.

Did you know in Kart 64 if you're in 1st place and had enough time to try to cross the finish line in reverse, the kart will go straight again and automatically fix its reverse orientation, thereby crossing the finish line twice and awards you two wins? It tends to piss friends off if you're keeping score, but still an interesting trick.

Localisation error in Mario Kart 7: The course Music Park is called Melody Motorway in Europe + Australia, but Nintendo never bothered to change the actual assets of the level so many decorations and signs still display Music Park no matter what version you play.

Considering Mario Kart and Smash Bros are the highest selling Nintendo series besides just Mario, and maybe Zelda, I would say yes it worked out
There's plenty of characterless racing games, and they're all pretty dull to be honest.
But Smash Bros. is the most unique fighting game. You're not supposed to get the opponents rid of their HP, you're supposed to throw them off the map.
Miyamoto always spouts random nonsense and the actual developers have to make something out of it and then Miyamoto gets called a brilliant mind. I don't think that's how it should go.

The voices used for Toad, Luigi, Peach and Wario in the Japanese version of Mario Kart 64 might sound familiar, and this is because these are the characters' voices that were used in Mario Party and Mario Party 2!
Also, in the original, if you finish a 1p cup in 4th place, they have a screen where your character stands next to the podium saying something like "you need to score top 3 to win" or w.e
