One summer, when I was a teenager, I worked with my uncle on his catering truck in Toronto. We'd stop early in the morning at a deli/bakery on Danforth Avenue for individual meat pies. Once I went in with him. In the kitchen on a table were three large mixing bowls. In each one was a cat curled up having a nap. True story.
My late father read meters for a Toronto utility years ago. He always had horror stories about going into restaurants, especially the Chinese eateries (he called them sewers) in the Spadina/Dundas, Broadview/Gerrard areas as well as all along Danforth Avenue. Meters were always in the basement. He saw rats, mice, lice, dog sh*t, crates of rotten vegetables, pails being used as toilets, etc.
That's interesting, I talked to a retired meter reader in CT and heard the same types of stories. One of them really stood out where she went into a asian restaurant and witnessed meat being kept on the floor.
I service commercial dishwasher and man just when you thought u have seen it all .. nope there is a restaurant with lot more and it doesn't matter got fancy the place is.. most dirty are bar machines !!

We never go out to eat…we irder Chinese from a very clean place in Toronto on Yonge street…not one complaint ir stomach ache in 12 years…
