Preload and Afterload Nursing | Stroke Volume, Cardiac Output Explained

  • Preload vs. afterload nursing review of stroke volume and cardiac output.
What is cardiac preload and afterload?
Cardiac preload is the amount the ventricle stretch at the end of diastole. Diastole is the filling or relaxation phase of the cardiac cycle. Preload is the amount of blood volume that fills that ventricle when the filling phase is over. Therefore, it is also called the end-diastolic volume (EDV).
Cardiac afterload is the pressure the ventricles must work against to open the semilunar valves so blood can leave the ventricle and enter either the lungs or systemic circulation. Afterload is influenced by vascular resistance, which is either pulmonary (which affects the right ventricle) or systemic vascular resistance (which affects the left ventricle).
Preload and afterload play an important role in affecting cardiac output because they influence stroke volume. Cardiac output is the amount of blood pumped by the heart per minute, and it's calculated by the heart rate times the stroke volume.
Stroke volume is the amount of blood pumped by a ventricle per beat. The three factors that influence stroke volume are contractility, preload, and afterload.

The quizzes are awesome too in letting me know what I need to go over again and in making sure I fully understand and can apply the material in the same way I need to on an exam. Thank you so much for all of this!

Ms. Sarah, I would just love you to say thank you for posting all of these videos. I get so frustrated sometimes because my professor gives us loads of PowerPoints and never really goes into detail it’s missing pieces that’s causing me to not understand the concept! Every time I don’t understand something, I immediately go to your videos and you go through ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING that my professor goes over and MORE! You repeat some things in your video and it helps significantly. Thank you so much for making school for me so much less difficult. I love love love and appreciate you so much for helping me and for others when you don’t have too. I hope you are well mentally and physically and will be sending lots of love and blessings! THANK YOU from a future NP ❤️

One area I'm really interested in is cardiac nursing, because it does not change like other specialties such as cancer. I worked oncology as a CNA for 2 years and I just felt like I could never keep up with all the changes. I also like all the technology used in cardiac and it's neat to see what they come out with next. You can use your phone now to monitor your heart-so cool.
