    Join Hudson Valley landscape photographer and Canson Infinity ambassador Robert Rodriguez Jr in this basic introduction to fine art digital printing. Learn about the art and process of producing a fine art print, including color management, file processing, inkjet technologies, ICC profiling, and paper selections. You'll learn about what makes a great fine art print, the different types of papers available today, and what to look for when choosing a paper for your own work.
    As an experienced print maker, Robert will share his expertise and experiences making and selling his own fine art prints in galleries and art shows, as well as which papers he uses and why. He'll also demonstrate his printing workflow using Lightroom 4 and Photoshop. There will also be a Q+A period where your questions about paper, printing, digital workflow, and landscape photography in general can be discussed.

    There is one detail that I think you may have missed in regards to resolution when it comes to display devices and that is, Pixel Density. Which is not really relevant for printing but it does make a difference when going from a device that has the standard pixel density to one that has a higher density like Retina display devices.

    Canson Baryta Photographique (spelling?) has the "F" type surface, and it has fantastic definition and separation in black and gray in black & white photos, and colors are also excellent; I always export from Lightroom to Photoshop for resizing & printing as .tif files. I have Photoshop manage the colors in my Canon printer because I like the results better. I haven't tried printing raw files from Lightroom.

    At 1:26:30, the presenter stated that in evaluating the test print any discrepancies could be related to workflow, paper profile, or monitor calibration. I don't recall him mentioning that it could also be the capability of the printer. It could be as simple as changing the blacks used or having a printer incapable of printing certain tones.

    Really informative (as per usual from these B&H videos). My only question is at 55 minutes in, shouldn't gray be set to sGray instead of Dot Gain 20%? From what I understand, dot gain 20% is appropriate for cmyk printing; my local print shop suggests using sGray in rgb printing. Then again, maybe it doesn't make a difference in gicleé prints?

    Does converting from Raw to DNG in LR affect the workflow through the printing process and if so how so (eg color space, calibration, etc.)
    When printing b&w does it matter what color space should u be working in (eg SRGB, CMYK, pro) and should you calibrate while viewing in B&W?
    When printing infared images is the workflow any different thru the printing procecess (eg ink selection, color space monitor calib printer calibration

    mahadragon: Clearly this video was for people who print, like me. It isn't that Robert is out of touch, it's that you are. You really think professional or serious amateur photographers don't print photos? When you step into a photo gallery you see what - blank white walls? You're saying no residential home should have a photo print on the wall anymore because you can look at that same image on an iPad or iPhone? No art school, gallery, home, store, restaurant, cafe, coffee shop, hotel, bar, nightclub, school, hospital, or any institute of any kind, should have a photographic print on their wall because they should only be viewing images on some idiotic electronic device the size of a matchbook, or at its biggest, a computer screen? You mean, that in the year 2014, nobody, and I mean nobody, should dare give a photographic print to any other living human being as a gift merely because they can zip that image over to them on their iPhone with a touch of their thumb, and that embryonic-size image will retain all the same visceral impact as a 20x30 print? Thanks for the education.

    • @BandH
      @BandH  Před 10 lety +1

      There are many options for adding a signature on a photo. You can scan a copy of your signature, and then in Photoshop remove the background. If you save it in a format that supports transparent backgrounds, you can then superimpose this over your photos. For the best results, you would want to make a TrueType font from your own signature. If you Google "TrueType font signature", you can find software online for this, or companies who offer this service. Christina- askbh@bandh.com

    I am using high quality paper including Canson and Moab. My photography is mainly landscape, wildlife and abstract. As soon as I turn on ink and paper simulation during the soft proofing process, my image becomes dull and generally that is how it will print. I install the appropriate ICC and pretty well follow the proper print process with within LR. I've googled this issue and I've come across other folks who have encountered this. The suggested fixes are many and varied with some folks stating that matte paper will always produce a duller print than what is viewed on the monitor. Any comments would be most appreciated.

    • @BandH
      @BandH  Před 8 lety +2

      +Γιώργος Αλεξίου Adobe RGB 1998 was designed (by Adobe Systems, Inc.) to encompass most of the colors achievable on CMYK printers, but by using only RGB primary colors on a device such as your computer display. ProPhoto RGB is just about the widest color space. However, because it is so wide, it can give you all kinds of grief if you don't know exactly what you are doing. For example, if you do not have a full understanding of color space (working spaces in Photoshop), or the differences between sRGB, Adobe RGB and ProPhoto RGB, or a full understand the differences between 8-bit and 16-bit depth, then I highly recommend to not convert or use ProPhoto RGB. It contains many more colors than you can see on any monitor, it even encompasses what can only be termed "theoretical colors" because they're outside the visible color range in the physical world.
      The advantages of ProPhoto RGB is that it's the only color space that can contain all the colors your image can capture in raw and all the colors that today's wide gamut printers can print. If you are going to use ProPhoto RGB, you'll need to work on 16-bit images to avoid potential banding.
      Also, if you are converting images from a large Color Space like ProPhoto RGB to a smaller one (for example when preparing an image to be CMYK printed commercially) the results can suffer especially when working in 8bit.

    I like how he described the misnomer about ppi vs dpi. Then proceeds to use them incorrectly in his discussion. How are we suppose to get across the differences if its constantly used incorrectly! people today are STILL telling people to export at a certain pixel size for said social media platform or websites at 72 ppi. LR should not even have that resolution active unless sizing is in "Inches or cm"

    Loved this tutorial. One question and or comment. Robert mentioned that sRGB is a small space used for images on the Internet. My Photo Lab Mpix-Pro requires images sent to them to be printed on photographic paper use the sRGB space. If I send them to them, or even Sam's or Walmart as Adobe 98 or Adobe Pro the prints come back off color. I learned this the hard way on clients images I printed at both places. Once I changed to sRGB the color matched my calibrated monitor and the scene as shot with my Nikon D7000.

      @tobyhawkins Před 7 lety

      Dave Cruikshank I don't know your local photo lab, but Walmart really isn't a good benchmark for quality or attention to detail. Most specialist (independent) photo labs will have their own icc profiles they provide. With both my local labs, I have to convert an image to the relevant icc for the print process I want them to perform, then send them my converted image.

      So for an 8x10 you're looking at 768 x 960 pixels? If so, I have done tests like this before. My reasoning was I worked somewhere where I was responsible for data storage and backup and I was trying to convince our users that they didn't need to scan and store at 600dpi.
      Anyway, same image at 600, 300, 200 and 150 dpi. There was no discernible difference at 300dpi. 200 was slightly less detailed and 150 was starting to look pretty bad.
      So I'm not saying you're wrong, but in my tests, I wouldn't want to print a photo below about 250. 300 ideally for smaller prints. Your mileage may vary of course :)

    Ich habe meine alten Kameras ausgetauscht gegen neue. Nicht dass die neuen viel bessere Qualität abliefern. Es gibt aber so Sachen wie Autofokus, do in keinem Fall die 6D Mark II der alten 5D Mark II haushoch überlegen ist. Vögel Fotografieren ist jetzt viel einfacher. Tja und manchmal muss das ISO hoch und da sieht man den Unterschied aber deutlich.

    At one time, dye-sub printers were the benchmark for their continuous tone ability. Ink jet print heads have become so refined that it's almost impossible to distinguish well made Ink Jet prints them from wet traditional prints. The one drawback was the choice of media was limited to the dye-sub printer model.

    DNG is LR's native editing format and a file will be converted to a TIFF or JPEG for printing. B&W printing is best down using a printer with monochrome inks and the printer's driver settings for B&W prints. IR images would be printed the same as regular color. TIFF and PSD files are both uncompressed and only a TIFF file would offer compatibility with non Adobe programs.

      This is an excellent fine art archival paper with a pearl finish and a white base. It is very reminiscent of darkroom paper from its thickness and feel.

    looking at this eight years later. I wonder how much of this he would need to change now? Some of this information is now dated but they seem to be about preferences, which may have been justified at the time but are now no longer applicable. That's entirely understandable.
