Roma in Serbia struggle in squalid living conditions | DW News

  • Houses made of scrap material, no running water, no electricity - if you think it sounds like Texas after a winter storm or a forgotten refugee camp, think again. This describes home for thousands of Roma families across Serbia. Many of them ended up in Serbia two decades ago fleeing the war in Kosovo. Their temporary shelter, now permanent housing - entire makeshift neighborhoods that Serbian authorities seem to overlook year after year. DW correspondent Fanny Facsar visited one of these settlements on the outskirts of Belgrade.

Here is one story from my small hometown in Serbia. Our city government gave one family of approximately 8 Roma people 2 x 60 square meter apartments in a brand new building. I know it’s not enough but at least it’s something. What they did was removing the laminate floor and burning it in the center of the living room, like there is no central heating. It is most of the time wrong match - there are many Gypsies who want to keep their current lifestyle, like travellers who can not settle down. They are not in need of the order we used to live in. And governments like in Serbia, Slovakia, Romania etc. provide housing to random gypsy families, who have no intention to settle down. This does not make sense. They just need access to fresh water, food and fuel for heating in winter. Apparently they also need a regular garbage collecting service near their tents. I find such government policies to satisfy EU regulations completely wrong.
There are some sort of others, who do want to integrate, send their kids to school and mobilize upward. Seldom there is a match between gov. subsidies and such families.

Well it's no issue how many kids they have but at what age... They refuse to live "normally" and marry after school for starters. When i was in 8th grade which is last grade of Elementary in Serbia(14 years of age) we had a big girl in our class that had a baby in 6th grade and was going to school from time to time, teachers tolerated her, she would drive her baby in a school yard during lunch brakes i remember very well as we boys would spy on her as she would take her breasts out to feed a baby behind school building and back then there was no porn or playboy or anything like that so to see that for boys was a big thing. Moving on... She could have EASILY finished Elementary but she left 5 months more or less i don't exactly remember before the end... Made the boys really sad also girls that liked to play with her baby. She also could have repeated a grade but she left. One might say she was poor so she had to but her parents were rich, worked in Germany had a huge house with statues, fountains, pool and gardens... She however married some poor 3-4 year older guy and lived in trash with him. That's just one example but their life decisions are their only problem. It's not money or governemnt it's them.

I come from a poor Serbian family and they have more rights and financial support than I do, but guess what? We don't live in a gabrage because we choose not too, we can organise, we can save, we can do hard work and we can go to school. The problem is in their mentality, that can't be changed easily, there were times when they received flats where they can live, but yet they very soon ended up as it is shown in the video. There is some Serbian youtuber called Kimi'sLife who helped some boy who has been asking for money on the street, and the goal was to send him back to school and financialy supports his family more than average Serbian family has, but he wasn't successful in that because they wouldn't listen and aren't thankful, they don't care much about the future and theirs children future (the reason why they have like 10s of them). There are ofc some exceptions but it is very rare. But I am mad they make such documentaries for my country to seem way more bad than it is. Why don't they record some struggling Serbian family to survive without much help provided as to Romas?

Yep, they choose to live like that. Few years ago, Belgrade gave free flats to them, but they pretty much sold everything they could from them and left them (they could not sell flat).

  • @QueensrycheGirl
    @QueensrycheGirl Před 2 lety +14

You should make a video about how government gave the Roma people a building in Borca ( part of the Belgrade) because the government renovated Belgrade waterfront. And people demolished the building in Borca, removed all the windows and doors and parquet from every apartment they got for a living over the night and disappeared. I guess they did that to sell, and they moved to another cardboard settlement. It’s hard to integrate someone in the society if they don’t want to be part of it. I’m not saying that all of them don’t want but it’s hard to find someone who wants to educate their children and find a regular job. The government should do more prevention and education if that’s possible or make a law where they are obligated to work if the have children. Not to make the beggars from them.

  • @ir2841

Young couples in MANY countries postpone their child wish because of multiple reasons. (Temporary) joblessness, financial problems and / or other factors. In short: they apply their reason. --- And the one Roma man here? SEVEN children. Many Roma people chose their fate. Do not complain when it is within your power to improve your situation.

I cannot believe you only dedicated 4 I repeat 4!!!! Minutes for this issue and interviewed one!!!!!! Family who fled Kosovo (not to mention that the reason for their fleeing is not mentioned at all!!!!!) I am beyond shocked of the audacity to produce such a piece of garbage with so many missing information. This is shameful. Not only because you purposely left out information but also because you are spinning the narrative in a certain direction. There are so many additional things that have to be said.
    1. Romas history in Europe and in Eastern Europe at least some of the basics
    2. The structure of their lifestyle and as what it means for them to live in tribes
    3. What kind of benefits they do already receive in Serbia.
    4. There were projects already trying to tackle the problem where are the results of that?
    5. If it is only “Serbian problem” where is the comparison with a country where the problem has been resolved (with the same Roma tribe attitude not the ones that integrated)
    6. I can bet that the Roma advocacy coordinator did not even know what this will be about as he speaks of the problem in general. You have human rights fighters everywhere and he also talks in general about the problem of Romas! Never did he underline anything other than that there is a problem as everyone who has a brain can acknowledge!!!
I do not understand how this was approved for production. LOL and the #KosovoWar what even were the aim of this? How could this possible be ever considered serious journalism?

And Romas living day to day life would accept anything. There is some Serbian youtuber called Kimi'sLife who helped some boy who has been asking for money on the street, and the goal was to send him back to school and financialy supports his family more than average Serbian family has, but he wasn't successful, they don't care much about the future and theirs children future (the reason why they have like 10s of them). There are ofc some exceptions but it is very rare. But I am mad they make such a documentaries for my country to seem way more bad than it is here, why don't they record some struggling Serbian family to survive without much help that is provided as to Romas.

Yes, they live in horrible conditions and should be helped but even more what they need is education and integration in society. Because they are living entire lives in this condition they act like it even if they get shelter or even home. If they are not trained none will hire them and to be honest some of them refuse to learn because this is the life they know. It is a long and hard process even for rich countries let alone Serbia.

That last comment on the requirments for Serbia to join the EU one day is very cynical. I am Bulgarian and in Bulgaria thousands if not thens of thousands of Roma live without access to running water or electricity and they knew that before 2007. For the EU Serbia is far from a priority. BG and RO joined the EU back in 2007 to connect the EU-corridor with Greece. Geopolitism of a supranational institution.
