I wouldn't mind living Março Polo's life.
Just the amount of things he experienced and saw. Truly a life worth living.
[Most men just get stuck in Tibet, no one comes to rescue them from Castle Anthrax]
Spend a year traveling the world!
You can. Just get a job that requires you to travel the world.
Did you ever hear about Marco's search for Shangri La? They found this blue resin that turned his crew into giant blue monsters and ate each other in a Borneo jungle after running from a tsunami. Then later the ancestor of Sir Francis Drake named Nathan Drake picked up on his journey and had to race a crazy guy named lazaravic and his mercenary army to the Himalayas to find it before lazaravic eats the resin and takes over the world or something.
Nate ended up killing him by blowing up the flammable blue resin and saved the world.
All of this is 100% true.

This, from the dude who dared to tell of a singular woman, who was so amazing, no man could beat her, and get her to marry him. THAT would have offended traditional Christian Europe more than anything... so the question becomes: "What, in God's name, did he hold back because he thought Europe couldn't take it??!"

"The Travels of Marco Polo" is still in print today. It's a wonderful book. It kind of reads like a "Business traveller's guide to the Orient", with detailed information on trade goods available in every single city he visited. There are also plenty of adventures and side stories included. Marco Polo himself, several times in the book, disavows the most outlandish of stories (dog-headed people etc), as he felt he wouldn't be taken seriously if he included these.
Lies again? Marine Soldier
He wrote the book like a fantasy/romance novel. He wasnt an explorer he was a fiction writer.
@@SpookyGoober He was both?
@@NazriB The editor for his book was an arthurian fan fiction/porn writer give him a break
He was so underrated. People will always dislike what they don't understand. If we forget our notions of superiority we could expand our lives.
Marco Polo is greatly OVERRATED. Seriously, compare his travels to that of his contemporary, Ibn Battutah. Ibn Battutah traveled about twice as many miles and visited almost ten times as many different countries. Seriously, if you are interested in "ancient" travelers, investigate Ibn Battutah.
Benedict Wong was great as Kublai Khan in the show Marco Polo. Of course it’s just a show but sad it got cancelled. Wong was so right.
Pedantic Pete Absolutely Brilliant!!!
Death because of death
Wong was fantastic as Kublai!

One of the best channels on CZcams. The consistency in subject and execution is awesome. This story in particular is epic. I'm about to order a Polo biography.
I love how he refers to people who thought polo was lying a “the haters” lmao
???
I love Simon's channels. I learn something new everyday. I believe if Simon was my teacher I'd be smarter. He's so eloquent. I also want to thank the team that's behind Simon. Keep up the great work.
If I could go back in time and experience the life of any person, it would be Marco Polo.

This channel is addicting. Thanks.
I watched the tv show Marco Polo. Now I know all there is to know about him. Including how Genghis Khan was also on the Prometheus in a future life.
It was a great series, sadly the marketing was bad, it only got canceled because not enough people knew the show
lol
good for you bruh
I was waiting for this biography! I am currently reading "Travels of Marco Polo".
Polo didn't just get arrested in Genoa during the war, get put in jail with Rustichell da Pisa, and out of boredom, the book was written. Polo was the commander of one of the ships for the Vinetian fleet during the battle of curzola. During that battle, pretty much the whole vinetian fleet was captured including Marco Polo. The pows were then transported to a prison island and while there Polo told the stories of his travels to peoples and then from talk, more and more people came to hear Polo's stories. Rustichello who was also a prisoner in the island was one of the people who caught word of polos stories and wanted to write of them.
You do a massive work by documenting yourself on different characters throughout history 👍🏻
Thank you. I enjoy most of your biographical videos but this one was enchanting, very well done.
Humanity is such a strange yet wonderous creature.
If you have never. Read Marcos. Biography called the journeyer. You're truly missing a good book. The stories he tells in it are absolutely mind-blowing. And it starts out with Marco as a Troublesome youth in Venice.
These videos really give you a great different insight into these people beyond their legacy, getting to know them more on a personal level in a sense
Just another amazing insight into an amazing person of history! Thank you to everyone who works on making this channel amazing!!

That was a great episode! Thanks guys
Amazing stories. I read the travels of Marco Polo (Il Milione) when I was in middle school in Italy. I remember studying history of China as well... Thanks for the video!
The sound of music in the desert is pretty amazing. The first time I saw a video with it I thought it was a hoax, but I guess the sound is created when an avalanche of sand creates vibrations that become trapped in between the upper, dry layer of sand and the wet sand beneath, with the depth of that dry layer determining the note. What's really freaky is that the sound can travel across the desert and linger for hours after the avalanche has stopped. If I had lived back then I would totally have believed in desert spirits as well. In some ways I wonder if our technological prowess has robbed the world of some of its magic. Marco probably told that story of spirits singing songs in the desert a thousand times in his life; how many kids went to bed dreaming of magical deserts haunted by the spirits of phantom warriors or something?
6:41 this is a modern tourist attraction still right by the Gobi. Weird thinking someone from 900 years ago wrote about it.

Great episode! I actually enjoyed Marco polo on Netflix, I wish they made a third season.
Same
roman empire had heating, plumbing and sanitation also before it collapsed and that was 1200 years earlier than this..
Exactly. 1200 years. Everyone forgot about it.
The Byzantines (aka Roman Empire of the East) held the same heating and plumbing and sanitation technology also.
@@arandomgreekfrombactria6302 constantinople did have awesome architecture and technology. complete with aquaducts and underground fresh water storage and sewer system ( separate I assume). I guess all of these advanced works were probably copied from the Roman model. All of my understanding of constantinople and byzantium is from CZcams videos so I can't be too sure. I could read read a trusted source but that conflicts with my laziness which indicates my level of laziness being as how reading itself is considered a lazy activity.
The video is from Polo’s viewpoint. Would he have known about that technology?
Magnificent video. Thank you!
Simon you are a fantastic host and if not my favourite, love you man! Keep it up👏🏼
He would have been the worlds greatest grandad with all those stories
The funny thing about the Christian side of the story is that Marco Polo came across multiple Christian monasteries in China at the time.
Nestorian / Manichaeism.
Correct, it was Christian heresy but no one from the west knew that anymore at that pointSoar-ed Recreation
I am under the impression that Simon is very anti Christianity. Although I really enjoy his videos I noticed a slight of hand in many of them. He always tends to throw in something negative about conservatism or Christianity. In one of his videos he talks about a serial killer growing up in a conservative household, but it turns out the mother hated men, so it would be nice to know what he means by conservative. She sounds like a screeching feminist if you ask me.
Adnel Ma what makes him an anti Christianity? You denying all the real notorious actions Christians has done throughout history of its existence and still doing in the name of christ? Just because someone is documenting something of what’s actually happen doesn’t make you an anti Christian just because it doesn’t fit your narrative of being a peaceful religion.
Adnel Ma also he isn’t wrong when his referred to as a conservative household. It’s not once action that makes someone conservative, it’s once ideals. There’s horrific people wherever it’s conservative or not. Even good intentions can sometimes corrupt or become horrid actions.
good video, really helped me for my history presentation!

Richard Head I’m aware of that - most of my information has come from relatives or friends of them actually
@Richard Head The actual events are probably true, but people’s behaviors and decisions were every bit as chaotic and spur-of-the-moment as they are today.

Suggestion: could you please add citations/ references on the screen as you recite the script?
A decent portion of your audience appear to be well versed in history and sometimes have differing accounts. There are various reasons why historical testimonies may differ. By providing these citations as you go along, it helps discern the validity of yours and other peoples statements.
what a gret odea!
I thought about the same, because many things he pronounces are already proven whilst other are mere hypothesis or speculation and I feel they are added to the story to corroborate a specific point of view. If it's the truth that you seek than there is no more than researching it yourself.
Not related to the video but I received a Vincero for Christmas because of you guys. I love it.
