There’s nothing more to Zoro’s backstory with Kuina, it really is just a tragic random accident, though the live action left out the specifics that she simply fell down some stairs. A lot of people feel that’s too anticlimactic and it’s spawned lots of memes, but that is also the entire point that’s at the center of Zoro’s character: it’s so mundane, yet unexpected. It *should* feel like she got robbed, like that’s totally unacceptable for someone aiming to be the greatest in the world. And yet death cares not for your lofty ambitions, for it will take you on a whim, and so Zoro rages against the heavens to ensure that his name will be remembered for all time. For his sake, and for Kuina’s, who never got the chance. He carries her will with him.
Regarding Luffy’s parents, at no point did anybody ever say that they were dead or he was an orphan. He also wasn’t confused that his grandpa is a vice admiral in the marines, he’s *very* aware of that fact, and that his grandpa is credited as the man who cornered the Pirate King. He’s confused because he didn’t expect his grandpa to be there, attacking him. The reveal of Garp’s identity and relationship to Luffy is a huge one that doesn’t actually happen in the source material for hundreds of chapters, so they massively moved that up the timeline. Garp is one of the most contentious characters in the live action for how they handled him.
And speaking of contentious characters in the live action, Usopp really got robbed. I enjoy changing the Syrup Village arc into a locked mansion slasher horror fight, but the details in how they did it removed most of Usopp’s defining moments (he’s actually the one who takes out Kuro’s right hand man, a hypnotist named Jango, who was cut from the story entirely). It’s rather sad that Usopp’s introduction story had most of his importance taken, and replaced with Zoro’s backstory.
I had to laugh when you suggested Kaya join the crew since “ship needs a doctor.” Not just because she’s only just starting to learn how to be a doctor, but also because the actual doctor they do get… well… hahahaha. I won’t say, but we’ll definitely be seeing the character in season 2, and they will be more challenging to put to screen than anybody else so far. They’ll make Luffy’s stretching powers seem like child’s play in the effects department, hahahaha.

I don't remember if the Live Action Series mentioned it, but the Accident Kuina had was just that. She had fallen down stairs and broke her neck if I recall correctly. Just a little added context to Zoro and Kuina. He had already been there training for years and lost 2000 duels to Kuina without getting a single victory. That’s when he challenges her to a duel with real swords.
Also their sensei is her father. In the manga he’s actually very sexist and the reason why Kuina feels the way she does. He tells her she can’t be the strongest and she overhears him saying he doesn’t want to pass the dojo on to her because she’s a woman and instead considers Zoro. But obviously Zoro had other plans.

Usopp brings Luffy's goofiness is such an amazing guess because that's what exactly Usopp is. Every other crewmate balances Luffy's needs and personality. Zoro is alined with Luffy's convictions and strong beliefs. Nami is their navigator both literally and metaphorically as none of the others knows the world the way she knows it. Usopp is Luffy's goofy and play side.
Now Usopp does have a place in the crew which they didn't have much explore, (he is the human of the group compared to superhumans as Luffy, Zoro & frankly Nami also with her superhuman weather predictions (not explored in live action))

  • @kaialone
    @kaialone Před měsícem +31

Yeah, the "Garp is Luffy's grandpa" reveal here is pretty infamous, cause in the original story it doesn't happen until way later, BUT
There are various reasons for why they'd do it like that- Most notably, Luffy's grandpa *was* a character who appeared in the early beta pilot story of One Piece (like a oneshot chapter Oda wrote before the whole series was picked up)-
and when Garp later appeared in the manga and had an identical design to Luffy's grandpa from the pilot, there were fans who figured out their relationship WAY ahead of the reveal anyway (the pug-like hat Garp wears sometimes was actually something Oda gave him to try and obscure his look a bit)
So the Garp reveal being this early in the live-action could in part be a reflection of the fact that fans generally already "knew" about it.
Oh yeah, this episode also has the only mention of Haircut's real name afaik

@@YukoValis I think his character archetype resembles that of someone who feels responsible for the actions of others around him that he's acknowledged, and that was shaped by his lack of care or thoughtfulness for Kuina at the time of the accident.
Feeling responsible for someone else's death through some random action of one self is so unbelievably common, and the actions the person feels responsible for taking are nonsensical, namely like the wetstone example. There might be a direct correlation between events, but you'd have to foresee 200 steps into the future to prevent similar accidents, yet they still feel the responsibility.

The way Koina died was that she fell down the stairs, however as the story went on and Oda made the humans more naturally resilient, that became more scrutinized as a sad way for a young prodigy to die.
So much so that now there is a theory being passed around that Koina's sword was a cursed blade, cursed blades have a tendency to lead their wielders to their death. She was heading to the basement to get a sharpening stone because it was dulled because of her fight with Zoro, she then likely tripped on the staircase and fell on the sword. The sword did this because it didn't like her defeatist attitude and sensed a greater wielder in Zoro.

a bit of extra context for kuina that isnt really given in the live action:
    - she has these views about men and women because her dad (the teacher with glasses) told her outright that she couldnt inherit the dojo because she was a woman.
    - this was despite the fact that at this time she was already beating adult men in swordplay!
    - she Did actually die by accident: slipped on the stairs and broke her neck while she was on her way to retrieve a whetstone for her sword.
    - part of the tragedy here is that if she and zoro hadn’t promised to train with real swords, she wouldnt have had a reason to go to the storeroom in the first place.
and just to reassure you: you didnt miss anything, at this point, we dont know anything about either of luffy’s parents! all we know is that he was mostly raised by the village.

The One Piece Live action is generally very well received. IMO it's the best live action anime adaptation ever made, but it does have some criticisms. One major gripe a lot of people have is the way Usopp was utilized in this arc. These last few episodes are supposed to be focused on him. They're supposed to give us a clear idea of why Luffy needs someone like him on his crew. However, it does feel like we learn more about Zoro than Usopp and just have Luffy come in and save the day again.
In the anime, Usopp is shown going through great lengths, putting his body at risk to protect Kaya. It's supposed to hit even harder because Usopp is just a regular guy and isn't particularly remarkable like the other crewmates.
One could argue that they changed the setting and had less time to work with, but it really comes down to the way the character was used. Rather than have him cower in fear only to fire one projectile from his slingshot and get clowned, the mansion would've been a great setting to have Usopp show off his skills as amateur engineer.
Have him set traps Home Alone style as Kuro gets closer to catching Kaya. Have him hit Kuro with some sort of blinding substance to temporary disable him, and maybe trip him while his disorientated. Usopp can still lose the fight in the end, but the point would be to show how clever and determined he is to protect those he cares about.

In the manga/anime they just say she fell down stairs, but I think it was implied she was carrying katana. So my guess is that she was carrying katana down the stairs and fell on the blade. Mind you the falling on the blade part is my guess given context clues like how Zoro was waiting for her and they train with real katana and her death happened sometime between Zoro leaving the dojo to their meeting spot and her father giving him the news. She could very well have just fell and died from the fall itself as well.
In the anime the grandpa lore drop didn't happen until like 300 episodes in. So, this is a reveal that came up waaaay earlier for the live action.

Luffy was surprised to see his grandpa here, he knows that he is a marine.
Garp is a vice admiral though. I won't spoil the exact hierarchy but the vice already implies he is not the top of the food chain.
A vice admiral still is a position that doesn't just casually stroll around to flush out small fry pirates like luffy. He hasn't even a bounty at this point.

Garp was first shown only in episode 68. And the information that Garp is Luffy's grandfather comes only after the most famous One Piece's arc - Enies Lobby in episode 313 of the series.

Many fans were upset about this death, but I think it makes perfect sense with the vision of the author.

It is so rare these that a show would acknowledge men can defeat women physically (yes, there will always be exceptions). It hits at a reality Zoro never considered that Kuina struggles with. His wish to help her grow stronger alongside him evolving into him growing stronger for the both of them is just such a great motivator for his character.

Well no, it doesn’t say that. It mentions that despite the gap, Zoro knows that Kuina can still beat him.
The message isn’t some sexist notion that men always beat equally skilled women on brute muscle, it’s that Kuina is capable and women are capable of beating men just fine
It’s not about exceptions, it’s about the reality, and how men typically downplay womens strength to keep them in line.

Her death is deliberately mundane. That's one of the reasons Zoro became so driven, because he knows firsthand how quickly someone's potential can be meaninglessly snuffed out. It's more interesting than a revenge story, since he has nobody to blame for her death.

I feel like it added a bit of guilt for Zoro because she fell while getting a whetstone to sharpen her sword. Why would she be sharpening her sword? Because they were dueling with real swords. I can see someone that young thinking “if I hadn’t challenged her to that duel she wouldn’t have needed to go down there”
