Every year design trend folks say that “boho” is out and something else that is EXACTLY like boho is in-“elevated boho,” “modern boho,” “scandiboho”, “nomad”, etc. Just embrace it. Boho is here to stay and there’s a lot more variation, micro trends, and lifestyles encompassed within the boho umbrella than the design world wants to give it credit for.

Speaking of making decisions that will last you 10, 15, or 20 years, I would LOVE to see y’all discuss universal design.
If you aren’t familiar with it, the idea is that buildings constructed to be easily navigable for people with physical disabilities make them more accessible to all humans.
A few examples: wider doors for people in wheelchairs make it easier for people with strollers to get in the house, no step/wheel-in showers with a seated bench built in make it easier to shave legs, and reach down/pull down cabinets for use by wheelchair users make it easier for children or adults who are short to easily access all cabinet space.
Even if you’re able-bodied, making decisions now about furniture, decor, and structural components that follow universal design will make it easier to age in place.
There are a ton of benefits to designing spaces with universal design, but there are some practical difficulties, too. For example, installing sinks with roll-under space means there’s no storage space below.
I’ve been heavily researching universal design for a home build, and while there’s a lot of information available, there aren’t many updated examples or interior designs to pull from. I really feel like you would kill it if you made a video discussing some of the common elements of universal design and your suggestions on how to make the space both visually pleasing and feel like a home rather than a purely functional house.

It always looks clean and shows the variance of grain in the wood beautifully. The great thing about a quality wood floor, tho, is that you can always have it refinished fairly economically. Fun video 😁. The main take-home- message I get from combining the content of many of your videos together is... "Go for classic style and don't follow trends, mix and mingle cheap and expensive" .. Then your house 1) won't go out of style and 2) you will save loads of money due to not having to renovation and change furniture out every year or to! Which is also good for the environment!
In Europe we love "light woods" (US: blond wood) and there are so many different types... And they are loved in northern Europe because homes have smaller spaces and dark long Winters.. So light woods and white walls give a feeling of more space and light in a small home! But we use colour in accessories.
I find, as a northern European, many American homes (if I generalize) are either 1) depressing with their dark brown furniture and obsession with beige and browns, or 2) look visually cluttered eg in fake farmhouse style with the obsession of putting signs up and labels on everything (eg Ray Dunn) or 3) they lack personally (as you said) due to the other extreme.. White on white on white...which looks sterile.
So I guess what influences our perception of what is good or bad is just "what we are used to"!?.. And we should just do what makes us feel "at home and happy" in our own space!

I think timeless design is about balance. When our friends were knocking their walls down, we kept ours. Saying that, if you have young children, you may want an open concept kitchen/dining/family room. Just make sure there are plenty of private spaces, like a sitting room, or a library. Flexible partitions and pocket doors allow the space to be divided when you don't all want to be together.

For example, painting out all of the dark wood surfaces white, tearing down all of the walls, creating a huge bathroom, etc. and we’re actually not doing any of them because we feel it will erase all of the character of the home that we have really fallen in love with. I think we have found a balance between classic and trendy that comes from a really authentic place. Our home isn’t ‘Instagram ready’ and we really love it. Great list, have to admit I'm not a fan of most of what was on this list in a design perspective. The issue with trends is that it can be limiting for various reasons, it's why it's nice to just do trends with less expensive things that can be switched and not have it be a part of a more expensive renovation project. Can't wait for minimalism to go though, it's one thing to not want clutter, but another thing that there is nothing to make anyone want to return to a space void of any personality.

I've loved blonde wood for so long that I actually struggled to find furniture with it until recently and followed a lot of Australian design accounts because it's been big over there for a while. I use it all throughout my home but I do it because I love the brightness it brings and not because it's a trend. I'm really happy it's a trend right now though because I can finally easily find what I'm looking for. I also live right beside a beach so it's just the vibe 😊 I also love some rattan but it's certainly easy to go overboard. But the natural materials just feel great in a home. Our styles are very different to be fair though, I lean more into Scandinavian Coastal meets Transitional. I guess as long as you're not doing it for the trend who cares though lol! I'm laughing because 80% of this video came for my personal style I've developed over the years LOL but I still love videos like this. I like to hear all sides of it! And it just confirms that I still love it, trend or no trend!

My husband and I have 6 children, and while I appreciate having sight lines to keep an eye on the toddler, I would never want things to be super open. It's too loud, it's hard to have private conversations or a bit of quiet to read or whatever. However I also prefer the idea of a formal living/parlor room that I can keep clean and nice and not have pressure to keep the great room/keep room pristine all the time. Under no circumstance do I want to see the kitchen from the front door.

*Blonde Wood and Rattan* . Thank you for addressing this. I had blonde wood in the early 90's. I just can't even consider it again. I love the look and vibe of medium warm wood tones. I agree the rattan is being over-done. The Thrift Stores will be full of it in a few years.

On the blonde wood though, i think the reason i don't like it is that it makes me think of cheap, unsanded, unstained pine and wood for crafts.

Vee and Jack what i love is that you both aren't afraid to tell the truth❤
    1. Hyper minimalism - i totally agree with you guys. I honestly believe that people use this aesthetic cause they cant pinpoint their actual design style and just copy pinterest and dont use it for inspo and take elements from it and inject their own personality.
    2. Sculptural furniture does not look functional and cosy. Looks super uncomfortable and a space feels contrived especially if it is overdone.
    3. Wicker and Rattan trend - you said it all Vee. It is not timeless at all.
    4. Open plan homes - agreed from the first time you mentioned it. In South Africa new build homes are all open plan and i have never loved it. So i decided to buy an older home and just refurbished the kitchen and bathroom because older homes in South Africa arent open plan.
    Love the content ❤

I don’t disagree often, but in the South wicker is timeless. Antique and well loved pieces sell at a premium. It is open, airy and cool breezes flow through. Iron is hot to the touch and holds heat. Cushions are a must though on any out door furniture, for comfort. Wood furniture is the exception. Adirondack chairs do stay cool with open slats. However, they still need cushions and annual painting. Not everyone is comfortable in them.

I enjoy your channel and love to watch you 2 together. You guys always put a smile on my face. I think it’s good that your brought up these styling trends, but, there will always be people who prefer a much more laid back home atmosphere or love natural materials, such as rattan and wicker, those who are not minimalists nor are they maximalists, and so on. The biggest point I take from this video, is yes, of course, embrace what you love and what you want to reflect in your home, but moderation in most things is a good guideline and think about how much you are spending in trends that you may grow tired of eventually. Large, expensive pieces should be timeless and also adaptable to different trends as time goes on. Thanks for bringing this to our attention and helping us to think through our decor choices. PS: I love all your ‘lists’!

While I love my kitchen/dining area being open and connected, I've never loved the open concept where someone walks in your door and can see your whole life--your dirty dishes you haven't gotten to yet, your husband's laptop and keys he set on the kitchen table after work, etc. I LOVE that I have an entryway with a small sitting room off my front door where I can greet and invite people in without feeling self-conscious of them seeing my daily life "stuff" happening! 👍

I like the fun you and Jack have while you give us sound guidance. I love the look and lightness of basket weave lighting, however my first thoughts on design usually revolve around “is this light, piece of furniture, rug, etc., going to attract dust or be difficult to dust or clean?” We live in a low-humidity, relatively arid climate. Unless houses are hermetically sealed, there will be dust. Lots of nooks and crannies in furniture and lighting make dusting and cleaning a pain in the tush. Simple, clean design makes cleaning easier!

As a creative I love colour way too much to ever want white walls or an all white room, as temptingly lovely as those spaces may look in decor magazines. My home is filled with jewel colours and classics like navy, cream, greys and greens. I'm leaning towards more muted, calm wall colours these days than when I was younger. Boho is always beautiful in my book for that creative and free spirited feel, as well as items that look hand crafted and unique. I agree with your comments on nomad style too, as I love incorporating treasured items from my travels into my home which keep the memories of special trips alive. Personally I've never been a fan of subway tile. Wicker will always feature here in South Africa, although I agree that furniture pieces date easily. I adore wood in it's many beautiful tones and have an eclectic mix, though oak is my favourite. I buy only what I love for my home, and years afterwards I sill love my purchases. I allow myself to go with trends in smaller decor items like cushions which can easliy be updated, but only if I truly love the look. Thanks for your wonderful videos, I love your channel and I love that you're as obsessed with home decor and design as I am x
