  • BARBER CHAIR TREE FAIL SCARY 😬
This was a scary learning curve I had this afternoon. I planned on practicing using my wedge to help direct some trees. Little did I know I put myself in a very scary situation!! I started out trying to learn how to bore cut into a tree. i made a face cut the was perfect , I wanted to take the wedge and practice learning how to use a wedge in a tree. When I was using the wedge I didnt realize that I didnt cut far enough into the tree. This caused a barber chair. I didnt plan on this video becoming a how to avoid barber chair situations or avoiding barber chairs.

RECAP: I planned on felling a few trees along the creek line. I am trying to clear trees and under brush. I have been practicing how to fell a tree, how to bore cut a tree, how to start chainsaw, how to use a wedge, how to avoid barber chairs. When I made the face cut everything was going well . Once I started my bore cut and back cut, I didnt cut far enough into the tree. When I was practicing with the wedge I had to much holding wood. I created a perfect scary barber chair situation.
Luckily this tree fail; i didnt get hurt and nothing broke or get damaged.

always expect the unexpected. there's not a cutter out there with any amount of experience who hasn't had something go wrong. your saw is cutting great and you're doing fine and noone got hurt....thumbs up !!

because of the lean, the wedge should not have been necessary, and it appears to have made the tree fall even with relatively thick hinge wood.
because the hinge/holding wood was relatively thick for the diameter of the tree, the tree did not want to fall freely, and the barber chair occurred.
whatever the case, you're safe and the tree is safely on the ground, and you can treat this as a learning episode.

Good evening twbishop, thank you for the kind words it means a lot. Yes I was trying to practice with a wedge since I was by myself I figured this tree was "easier".. But you are 100% correct I left way to much hinge wood when I tried to force it over with the wedge..
Thank you again twbishop for not only taking time out of your day to watch , but providing helpful insight to what I did wrong so I learn and get better.

Looks like if you had cut just a little more into your hinge wood you would have been fine.
The scarey part would be if the top didn't fall on its own.
Then you could have a real problem.

Good afternoon Cliff, sorry for the late response Alex had a basketball game at 2. Yes perfect thank you I will make sure to cut in a bit more. I hope I never run into that situation.
      Thank you again Cliff

Luckily it wasn’t a 50+ foot tree that barber chaired. I had one fall 90 degrees from where I wanted it a few weeks ago. That tree was fully spalted I cut and the hinge wood was totally useless. It also had some branches that didn’t help which caused it to fall the wrong way. Stay safe man.

Good evening Pohan, hope you had a great weekend! Sheesh that’s scary I was a bit rattled but I didn’t want it to stop me.
Thank you and stay safe as well.

I’m no expert but on that first tree I would have made my face cut a little deeper with slightly more angle. It looked to me like when you did the back cut the hinge started closing. If you kept cutting the back cut I think you’d been fine but, the pressure built up when you wedged it. Then it barber chaired.
I know on smaller trees that need wedging it’s tough to cut a deeper face cut because you won’t have much wedge room from the back. I think you had room on that one.

You are right this was all my fault I was trying to practice with the wedge but ended up messing up pretty bad. This tree would not have split if I didnt stop the back cut.
