- The XWA is a route that Rob and I did back in 2019. Rob asked me if I wanted to ride the XWA again this year in 2024, but this time with the Grand Depart. This video documents our Journey along the XWA! Big thanks to Troy Hopwood for putting together this route and all the work that goes into facilitating these grand departs!

@pnwbikepacking Yes, this is KYLE PHILLIPS COX! You know you are in race mode when your luxury item is a 1/8" thick sleeping pad. Next time we cross paths, I would definitely like to ride together. The Dark Divide and Stagecoach 400 have been on my mind for awhile. I am excited for the OTT video.

Another great video. I’ve followed you for a while now. Trying to catch up on your videos though. My wife and I were visiting family in Wenatchee and were riding Douglas Creek area when you came through. We had loaded our bikes in my truck and were with you on the last climb out near the waterfall. Tried not to dust you out but you waved us on. Had told you guys that the rider ahead had took his shoes off at the first creek crossing and we talked to him the whole time while put them back on before remembering to tell him there’s like another 4 or 5 crossings coming in the next mile or so. My bad. Had no idea that was you two. We had a few crossing with riders that day and made some connections on the xWa page to share a few pics. Anyways, small world. Keep the great videos coming.

Thanks for always tagging us along in your adventures Chris! Any avid bike packer realizes that it’s a lot of work and extra weight to bring your camera gear and be constantly setting up the camera for shots during riding. And the XWA looks like such a beautiful bike packing route. A lot of the lush greenery definitely resembles my local area, which is in the beautiful Appalachian mountains in Pennsylvania. And glad to see the return of Rob😂. Gordon was fun along the AZT trail video , but doesn’t match the energy Rob brought to the videos. Thanks again and glad to see you enjoying some brews along the way 🍻😀

Another great video! Love this and love the XWA although it's not easy. The OAT was my favorite part. When I did my ITT in 2022, I got to Moses Lake on 4th of July weekend. It was definitely like a Mad Max movie! Loved having John meet me at the end, too. On a Sunday morning at 8 AM! He's the best.

I found your video and it clue'd me into the route ... got out there and did it myself ... though it took me a few attempts -- want to get back out and do it again with my other biking friend as he has yet to do it all himself so ... have to try and get him out on it on a GD when stars align for it

Great story Chris. You captured the adventure, the people, the challenges and triumphs. I didn't know these rides were drinking tours of the state, complete with warm dry pillows, but I learn new things all the time. I'd like to do this route in maybe three segments sometime. Pacific Ocean to Edmonds, Edmonds to Wenatchee and Wenatchee to Idaho.

Thanks for watching! Generally im stoked on it, but I haven't taken it on enough rides to make a full conclusion. For routes with a lot of tame gravel, I like riding with drop bars. Routes with more single track, I definitely prefer my flat bar hard tail mtb. On the XWA, you get both, but the majority of the route falls under tame(ish) gravel so Chumba was the right choice! You'll see it in future videos and ill be able to give you a better assessment!

A nice thing about this route is it is pretty varied terrain, so you get a little bit of everything. Looking forward to you putting out the best XWA video yet 😉! Thanks for watching David!

You guys really nailed the XWA experience. Your time was impressive too especially given the number of beers consumed! Seriously though, unless you are going for the "podium" best to stick to riding this route in the day. I rode a good bit at night and wound up regretting when i did.(Dogs, bulls, unfriendly locals).
Yeesh riding at night getting chased by dogs sounds horrible! Glad we didn't have to live through that! We'll stick to calling it when the sun starts to set...for now!

Love yalls videos. What are you using to attach your camera to your bag by your shoulder? Is it part of the bag or an attachment?
Currently I am using an Ulanzi Falcam F38 Quick Release backpack strap to attach my camera to my shoulder strap. I have also used a Peak Designs Capture clip which works just as well. I use the Ulanzi right now because the quick release plate works with my tripod. In my experience, this is the best solution for carrying your camera and keeping it very accessible while riding! Hope this helps!
Oh dear god, I lived across 522 from Blythe, that place is the worst when it's raining. Used that park with the Student League to practice switch back climbing and descending.

Loved your video guys! I've ridden part of that trail, from Easton to Vantage, but hoping to do the whole thing later this fall. Question for you: is it possible to put in decent mileage and stay in hotels every night so as to avoid carrying camping gear?
Thanks for watching. Absolutely. Thats basically what we ended up doing. We only camped on night two. If you didn't schlep around a bunch of camping kit, you could go super light and move a lot faster (or move at a more relaxed pace). We finished in 7 days 10ish hours. If you wanted to stay in hotels each night it would look something like this:
1. Port Angeles
2. Port Gamble/Edmonds
3. North Bend
4. Ellensburg
5. Wenatchee
6. Moses Lake
7. Ritzville
8. Finish in Tekoa
Keep in mind lodging in Tekoa is limited/non existent! There is a tiny park in the town where you can camp... but obviously you wouldn't have camping gear. So you'd need to look more into this. Good luck!

Do you guys do trips off-camera in addition to the ones you publish or is what we see pretty much all the trips you do together?
We do quite a few trips that don't make the cut. Sometimes we bring the camera and I film, but don't end up making the video, other times I just leave the camera at home. We also go on trips together that aren't bikepacking related so it doesn't really fit the channel.
