Foreigners Eating Feijoada in São Paulo. Is it Good? Brazil's National Dish 😋🇧🇷

  • We’ve arrived in São Paulo! We decided to immediately kick things off with a food video trying Brazil’s National Dish- Feijoada!
Feijoada is a dish primarily made of black beans but has different types of pork and beef added in, and is very much like a stew. It’s served with a whole bunch of side dishes that you mix in.
Because we were staying in the Itaim Bibi area of Sao Paulo, we found one of the higher rated feijoada restaurants in the neighbourhood, called Bolinha, which conveniently serves feijoada everyday (in some places they only serve it on certain days of the week).
After filling up on loads of food we head back to our hotel the Staybridge Suites - and give a tour of our amazing room. We really enjoyed our time here- it’s in a fantastic neighbourhood and has lots of amenities. To book our your stay head here: bit.ly/2ZoklGI
    ABOUT FEIJOADA
Feijoada is a stew of beans with beef and pork. It is commonly prepared in Portugal, Macau, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Timor, Goa, India and Brazil, where it is also considered a national dish. However, the recipe differs slightly from one country to another.

The orange with the feijoada serves for two things: back at the slavery time, it was like a desert, but they would just put together with the food. The second one, is that the vitamn C on the orange helps to absorb the iron on the beans, and it helps to not feel that "heaviness" we feel eating such a strong and heavy dish. I'm really glad you guys enjoyed it!

Yeah you got it right. Iron from vegetables (not just beans, but things like spinach) are better absorbed when consumed with vitamin C.
That been said, I never see orange being served with feijoada. I'm not even sure it is really traditional. Literally, that is the first time I heard of it.

Slaves did not eat any Feijoada! Thats a mith! It was a rich menu inspired in the Cassoulet (France)

    • @Alkis05
      @Alkis05 Před 3 lety +1

@@yurinikolaidzurasilvestre4305 Cassoulet might be a similar dish, but there is no evidence of connection between the two. Even the ingredients are different. Poultry isn't used in feijoada and sun dried meat or casava flour wasn't used in cassoulet.
I would give you that, the idea that it was invented and consumed regularly by slaves might be a legend, but the association is very old, dating back at least to imperial times (when it first entered historic records). Which is odd, isn't it?
Even the Cassoulet has it's origin story associeted with poor, hungry people, particularly related to war and hungry soldiers. It is not unlikely that similar dishes originated independently, and based on the ingredients available at each reagion.
Regardless, even if you called it a brazilian cassoulet, they are different dishes (they look, smell and taste very different) and brazilians deserve the credit for creating their own version of it, at the very least.
Frankly, the similarities kind of stop at they being stews of beans and left over meat.

Paz!

Guys, I admire your strength. There is a reason why feijoada is usually cooked on Saturdays and Sundays, it is so tiring to digest that ammount of meat and beans, we can see you needed a quick nap before heading anywhere you were meant to go. But, hey, you survived without any ciesta.

Great video! Glad you liked our food, though I'm not a big fan of feijoada.
Just a correction: there is a common misconception here in Brazil about the origin of feijoada being related to the slaves. The slaves didn't get any pork or beef leftovers. The most likely version is that the feijoada is a brazilian version with black beans of the french cassoulet, made with white beans.

Hey! Great video! As many said here, the black liquid saucy thing,it was actually a sauce! And the history about feijoada been created by slaves during the slavery time here in Brazil is just a myth. Its a legend created by the first big brazilian restaurants to attract customers to eat the dish in the beginning of the 20 century. It is actually a plate almost totally inspired by the french cassoulet. Well, again: great video! Keep up the good work!! Ps: this is one of the best Feijoadas in São Paulo. My sister used to work there.

Your videos are amazing. I keep watching them.
The language was a barrier for sure because one portion of the dish would be more than enough for two. Also, in another area you would spend between 10 -15 dollars.
The name feijoada comes from feijão (beans). It tastes better as old as it gets. It is very yummy!
There is no a specific way to start eating feijoada. Just sit down and have as much as you can manage.
The chips you had are from Mandioca (aipim or macaxeira) depend on where you are in Brasil.
Yuka is in spanish. In the UK is called cassava.

The orange is pumped with vitamin C, which helps our body to better absorb the iron from the beans. Also it is a very heavy and meat dish so the freshness of the orange helps to balance the meal. And just for curiosity, the rice and the beans complete each other and give our body all the essential amino acids that we don't produce and depend on food consumption to have it!

You guys are literally delightful to watch; thanks for visiting our country. It is a shame that such an expensive restaurant in Jardins did not have an English speaker to properly attend you. That little "soup" that came in a little cup it's actually a spicy sauce made with feijoada, peppers, onion and etc and it's supposed to be put on top of the feijoada. You guys did great though and had the real Sao Paulo experience. Hope y'all had the chance to visit Vila Madalena. Subscribed!
