Rules and Explanations
Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves
Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be some glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch. - Hry

For the record: The reason why Exeggcute doesn’t learn anything until level 25 is because it’s not intended to be catchable until level 23-26 at the Safari Zone. All the Pokémon in the Safari Zone, the Seafoam Islands and in the Cinnabar Island Mansion along with Tangela will have the same problem down the road with learning all of their moves at higher levels.
It’s a problem in gen1 generally. There were no eggs, so pokemon moveset are all balanced around the pokemons catchable level. That’s fixed in Gen 2.
Interestingly, they did it again in Gen 5. But instead of doing it with moveset, they did it with evolution levels.
Except it kind of still wasn't, because they didn't give the Pokémon that were catchable that late in the game full movesets. I'm fine with the idea of them not having any new moves at the low levels since you were never meant to get them that early, but the Pokémon you got in the beginning of the game, even if you don't use TMs on them, they easily had a full set of four moves by level 15 or so at latest, and then you go to the Safari Zone and catch a Level 24 Rhyhorn and it only knows Horn Attack. Are you putting that on your team? Because I'm not.
Things are at least better in the Seafoam Islands, because a lot of those Pokémon are catchable at lower levels via fishing, so your Level 30 Pokémon have decent movesets. But seriously, the legendary birds join your party at _Level 50_ and they only have 2 moves when you get them (though they'll learn a third after just one level-up). I feel like they should've made it so that any Pokémon that you normally wouldn't get until late in the game has 4 starting moves. We'll say Level 20.
Interestingly, there is an exception to this, and it makes me wonder if they originally planned to make its starting level lower. *Mewtwo* has a listed starting moveset of Confusion, Disable, and Swift, but learns Barrier at Level 63, Psychic at Level 66, and Recover at Level 70, giving it a move pool of Swift, Barrier, Psychic, and Recover when you encounter it. This heavily suggests that the Mewtwo encounter was originally intended to be at Level 60 rather than Level 70.
@@CyberchaoX it shows they thought about the concept but didn’t perfectly implement it.
I really want to see the Tangela run. Awful at the beginning but great as you reach Erika.
Thats irrelevant. Mewtwo has confusion at level 5.
Is it just with those zones ?
Fun fact: Exeggcute's Barrage starts dealing 2 damage per hit to Brock's Onix between levels 31-34 (depending on attack DV)
I'd hate to have to get to level 31 before the first gym.
Is this with max Attack Stat EXP or no Stat EXP?
@@OmegaTyrant
probably without stat exp.
The only thing giving atk stat exp I can think of is weedle.
which don't yield enough exp to level up fast
@@mangosteak Everything gives Stat EXP for every stat, Stat EXP yield takes all the base stats of the pokemon you knocked out, it's not like EVs where you only get EVs from the pokemon's highest stat or two. You don't need to knock out Weedles to get Attack EXP before Brock, in fact any other early non-Bug pokemon will give you more since they have higher base Attack.

Even in this super weak form, Leech Seed is still a godly move vs the AI. It probably healed like 100 health against Sabrina's Alakazam
I was not expecting that it could not learn Mega Drain, that's nuts. And here I thought Tangela had movepool issues.
Something possible even more crazy is that it learns Solarbeam by level up, but can't by TM. That's so strange.

Okay, the part with Exeggcute doing the hiker battle in Showdown and you doing a little acapella of the gen 1 battle them in the background was great. Great video with Exeggcute and commendations for suffering through barrage for so long!

This run was Eggcellent. You had to walk on eggshells at times but you're so cracked at this game that your yolked Exeggcute flipped your opponents like an omelette. I was so eggcited for this run because I wanted to see an irreggular Pokemon like Exeggcute come out of its shell. It brought my to tears and made my nose runny. Sometimes I really thought you'd hit a wall and I scrambled my brain trying to think of how you'd move forward. But your hard boiled determination got you through. It was always said seeing that egg drop when Exeggcute fainted but you kept it sunny side up and kept washing your opponents. It takes a hard shell to not get fried while doing these challenges. I had a dozen different outcomes in my mind but this outcome was not eggspected. Over all I'm glad we egged you on to get this tough eggregious challenge over easily. Very well Exeggcuted.

The reenactment music with the geodude/graveler trainer was by far my favorite part!
Jrose! The consistency in your recent uploads really makes me so happy. I’ve followed you for a few years now and it’s very nice to see you growing as a content creator.
I think Kangaskhan Gen 1 run would be quite interesting. I feel like it might rival your Tauros run 👀 (bad special, good base attack and speed stats, can also learn a lot of moves with type coverages). Plus, starting with only Comet Punch and Rage will definitely make Brock super interesting 😂
It also makes for quite possibly the only instance in gen1 where using rage is actual a viable strategy in that particular brock fight in another kangaskhan run I saw on another channel.
Kangaskhan isn't in the slow level up group like Tauros, which is a pretty big advantage since by the time it's at the Elite 4 it would be at a higher level.
After watching the entire video, I noticed Jrose didn't use or even mention leech seed + toxic combo that exists in Generation I. I'm not sure how he feels about it it, since it can be classified as a glitch and it's pretty standard now that the only glitch he uses is badge boost glitch due to not being able to avoid it completely, might as well take advantage of it.
Anyway, the fast explanation of leech seed + toxic combo is like this: Leech seed in Generation 1for whatever reason uses the same counting variable that toxic uses to increase poison damage each turn. When used together, both leech seed and toxic keep incrementing the same variable, making leech seed do increasing amount of damage, such as toxic.
Doing a basic math, if leech seed is used first and does 1/16th HP of opponent's HP, next turn toxic is used, it will already deal 1/8 HP of opponent's HP and leech seed will do 3/16 HP, and so forth (1/4, then 5/16). It's so devastating the most opposing Pokémon faint by 4th turn of accumulated damage. What's even more broken is that leech seed will also heal the same amount of damage done, so your Pokémon will be healing lots of HP each turn.
This is combo is really nasty and the most common users in Generation I were Bulbasaur and Exeggcute families, since they were the ones who learned leech seed in that generation by levelling up. Looking at Jrose's Exeggcute run, he replaced leech seed with mimic around Blaine's Gym, which is understandable since Exeggcute needed the speed boost in order to safely put all of Blaine's Pokémon to sleep, but what he could've done diferently there? I'd say instead of replacing leech seed with mimic, replace solarbeam with mimic. First because Solar Beam while useful against some powerful trainers such as Lorelei and Rival's Alakazam, it's damage potential is really not worth if compared to the leech seed + toxic combo. So for, Blaine's Gym, Exeggcute movelist would be psychic / hypnosis / leech seed / mimic. Giovanni could easily be defeated with same strategy, just updating hypnosis with sleep power, like done in the video. For Rival 6 battle, this move list could pose a problem since it wouldn't be ideal dealing against Rival's Alakazam, but maybe with some good sleep turns luck and psychic drops, it could be done. From Lorelei and onwards the strategy would be to replace mimic with toxic (Or just keep mimic if you wish to abuse amnesia from Slowbro, teach toxic to Exeggcute in the next fight). Bruno and Agatha would be essentially the same, Lance would potentially easier due to the huge amount of HP recovered from leech seed and finally against Rival champion battle, it would make Alakazam + Gyarados + Exeggutor much easier than having to deal with recovery moves/items while spamming sleep powder and solarbeam. The only real problem could be Charizard, but simply allowing Rhydon to hit some leers and tailwhips so Exeggcute could outspeed it due to the badge boost glitch and voila, just sleep powder and the psychic Charizard for a much consistent strategy against Rival whole team, no need for sleep turns last as long as 2 or 3 solarbeams attacks or psychic special drops
Not a foolproof strategy, that's for sure, because the limitation of 2 move slots is a huge deal, but it's a strategy to keep mind whenever using Pokémon that can learn leech seed in Gen I.
Now that’s a lot of text
The issue with that strategy is that it takes a long time to knock out most things, and takes up move slots
Takes forever to set up though.
You only get access to that combo after Koga, and by that time you already have Psychic; most pokemon are already knocked out in 3 hits or less by Psychic, and you'd rather put the opponent to sleep if you're having trouble with it.
Jrose re-creating the trainer battle theme is something that I didn't know I needed until today...
Yo can we get a full loop of jrose singing the battle theme, but seriously though this is a very interesting run but every time barrage missed I winced hat non 100% accurate moves
When you said you still had to do Koffin, it came as quite a surprise to me. Thought it was done around the same time as Ekans, as that would've made sense. And most of the mini-series that make sense, like all the eeveelutions, the hitmons, the starters, the legendary birds were all quite close to each other.
Yeah, should have did ekans, koffing and meowth all in one wee mini series

Absolutely loved the battle recreation part. Way to make a good segment out of a crappy situation 🤣
Another point about 2 60 base power moves instead of one 120 base power move is that sometimes, 60 base power is all you need, so you're wasting a turn, taking damage or status effects or stat drops.
And both or either 60 bp moves could crit
Its kinda like why True Strike is bad in 5E
Can't wait for the 2025 video summarising and analysing the completed tier list. Seeing Mewtwo reigning on high, handing out awards to most surprising Pokémon. Biggest gap between pre-evolved and it's fully evolved big brother. Going to be crazy good
The biggest gap is Abra alakazam no question. No other one comes close
Will Mewtwo be at the top though? There's still Starmie.
@@YOSSARIAN313 I had second hand pain for Jrose watching the Abra video. That was a rough one
@@robertlunderwood unfortunately Starmie can’t get recover without evolving from Staryu or psychic until you get the tm, so that run will probably be a lot of grinding which you simply can’t afford if you want to be faster then Mewtwo.
@@joelogbamichael7177 Starmie starts with water gun, tackle, and harden. Getting past Brock is no problem. The biggest problem is Misty. The only thing her Pokemon will use is tackle. Just use a bunch of hardens to start to defend against tackle and badge boost its tackle; don't level up during the fight. Once that's done, it'll get bubblebeam. Unless you want to badge boost against Surge, skip him until you pick up psychic or ice beam. That blows through Erica. Once you double back to Surge, thunderbolt is available, and then it's over. The final moveset will be surf, psychic, thunderbolt, and harden/ice beam/blizzard/mimic.
Honestly, the only downside is not being able to get body slam to make Surge trivial.
Love when jrose11 drops a video, my whole family sit down to watch this master pokemon player!!!

23:34 Actually, looking at the moveset for Exeggcute in generation 1, despite learning it from level up, it can't learn SolarBeam from TM. Exeggutor can, so that's really weird.
It should not be able to if it can already learn it through leveling up. Where it gets odd was that you had stated Exeggutor can and it may be because the evolution level is after it learns Solarbeam?
@@wewhoareabouttodiesaluteyo9303 "It should not be able to if it can already learn it through leveling up." That is patently false. Most Pokemon that can learn a move by level up can learn it by TM and tutor, as well.
"Where it gets odd was that you had stated Exeggutor can and it may be because the evolution level is after it learns Solarbeam?" Exeggcute doesn't evolve on level up. It evolves with a Leaf Stone.
@@logan_wolf
Yeah, I think that is where Pokemon screwed up. If a Pokemon already learns the move, it is redundant if it can learn it again through TM.
I guess one could argue that there should be a freedom to learn any move that it cannot learn or relearn a move it should be able to learn; however, it makes the game less challenging.
What I meant by Exeggutor learning it after evolution level is that most trainers would choose to evolve the Pokemon around level 20ish or whenever Exeggcute learns solarbeam. So the developers chose to have Exeggutor learn it since the Exeggcute is in its evolved form. They only intended the move to be used in its evolved form.
@@wewhoareabouttodiesaluteyo9303Nah, it's fine because quite a few pokemon don't learn said TM move until way later in the level up cycle. You also have pokemon that don't learn any moves after stone evolution. Don't know about you, but I'd much rather use the TM and then evolve than wait 24 levels for them to learn it. 😂 Just take the L instead of backpedaling to try and sound smart.
@@nolongeraperson "Don't know about you, but I'd much rather use the TM and then evolve than wait 24 levels for them to learn it."
It makes it less challenging. Really, at this point in time, many of the older generations that had played this game, found the original versions had a lot of bugs. I am thinking that many of these moves were not intended for a Pokemon to learn unless they evolved.
Like, for instance, what would the purpose of a 1st stage Pokemon of a three stage evolution do with a move like flamethrower? I guess one could state "many things." However, the natural progression of the game is that it gets more and more difficult and one needs evolution in order to overcome this challenge. Would it not be more useful when the Pokemon's stats work well with the move to keep it at its best?
The only Pokemon that could use that TM would be ones that then do not have it in their movesets. It would make more sense to me.
Jrose making the music for the battle against the Hiker is nothing but amazing LMAO
Doing breakfast while scrolling jrose playlist to rewatch some old runs.. then an exeggcute appears 🤩
really love the entire "making up for lost footage" segment, super super creative
I can't believe it took me this long, but I finally realized why so many of this Pokemon don't learn moves early on: it's because many of them you can never legally catch at level 1. Without breeding, the earliest level you can get a lot of them at is the 20s or even 30s, making move learning before that essentially pointless. I don't know, maybe this obvious to most people, but I just noticed it now, lol! Thanks for the great vid Jrose!
There's also no move relearner in gen 1 or 2, so any move they learned before their minimum catch level would essentially be pointless since you'd have no way of legally accessing it

Jrose11 notification: Real Shit
17:33 Sabrina's Alakazam is unique case of gen 1 "good" AI causing it to only use Recover against other psychic pokemon. It's a bit of a mess of good AI move priority rules, but in short, knowing Psywave, a non regular damage dealing move, causes Sabrina's "good" AI to de-prioritize every damage dealing psychic move (since it predicts them to be not very effective against other psychic pokemon), including Psywave. That leaves Recover as the only regular priority move, which it will then always pick.
Psywave is important in this equation, because normally there are safeguards in good AI against de-prioritizing every damaging move, but since Psywave does not function like regular damaging moves governed by Special and othee pokemon attributes, it causes the good AI to glitch.
Since Sabrina's Alakazam is the only AI pokemon who knows Psywave, this is unique phenomenon. I remember encountering this the hard way back when I played 1st gen with Kadabra as my ace, and his moves couldn't out-damage Sabrina's Alakazam's Recover, so I got stalled to death :D
Honestly, that recreation of the battle theme is exactly why you're one of the best Pokémon youtubers out there. Loved it so much, almost broke my chair laughing.
Okay I've been binging all your challenges runs this week and I have to say the absolute best part of this so far is when you recreated the hiker battle and were singing the fight music quietly. I'm glad he's not fried from all these runs. I hope this one goes sunnyside up. The start outlines quite a few cracks in this shell.
Go for yolk, Jrose! I really hope he went ahead and scrambled up extra trainers for that bonus flavor!
....egg pun.
What’s fun is that Exeggcute actually isn’t top 5 in terms of level, he’s narrowly edged out by the Pokémon in dead last, who, like exeggcute, missed out on a much better spot due to how closed off the game is pre-Brock.
ye tbh i found this decision a bit inconsistent. i mean he put abra to the bottom but exeggcute into the top tier
@@nihildwo4874 Abra took 12 hours just to get past Brock, Exeggcute had finished the run with change by that point, I don’t think there’s any inconsistency.
What about the toxic and leach seed combo? In Gen 1 it stacks and after a few turns you’re doing insane damage and healing at the same time.
That’s half of its moves though and it doesn’t work on poison types. Also eggy isn’t super bulky so it still loses to pokemon like Charizard. Sleep is just better.
@@Sunny92809 Psychic, sleep powder, toxic, and leech Seed. Is what I would use. Leech seed and toxic double every turn. It’s an insane combo. Its glitched in Gen 1.
@@jasonkershaw3198 That's exactly why he doesn't use it.
I think you could try it, but it would be 1 turn for Toxic, 1 turn for Leech Seed, then 2 more turns for it to faint (1/16 on the first turn, 5/16 on the second, 9/16 on the third, and then faint from 13/16 on the fourth). Toxic and Leech Seed is great, but you need a healing move to go along with it, and ideally something to buff up your defense (ideally also an attacking move). Pokemon like Gengar could tear through it with Confuse Ray or Sleep Powder, and Charizard would just use Flamethrower. I'm not sure Toxic and Leech Seed is best for a single Pokemon playthrough.
30:35 "Solarbeam, there is a TM."
Which, funnily enough, Exeggcute cannot learn.

Omg! I absolutely LOVE you singing the battle theme during the sim portion!!! 👌🤣 JRose! I love these vids man! I'm glad you're posting so much lately 🙂 a very sincere Thank You!
The music this video was baller!
I do disagree a bit with the rating though; Exeggcute's Experience Group (Slow) meant the level was more impressive than it appears. For example, it had ~40,000 experience points MORE than the Pokemon it ranked above, despite being 3 levels higher. I do take your point that the start was a bit rough for it, but given no other Pokemon (so far) in the unevolved Pokemon group was in the Slow experience group and its time was so high, I do think it could afford to go lower.
That said, it's all arbitrary; the main thing was this was an engaging video!
Yeah, and Abra is basically a more extreme version of this but was rated at the bottom.
@@DJFracus because it took 12 hours on Brock… nothing can really save you after that performance.

But seriously I love these videos and how they show off how conventionally weak mons can singlehandedly beat these games :)
I just did an Exeggutor solo run last night and it was infuriating. Made me think Exeggute would be a brutal pokemon when you got up to it, can't wait to watch (outside of the waiting I obviously did to type this comment first).
A fact you may know, but Exeggutor was one of the main Pokémon the developers used during the creation and testing of Red and Blue. I bet they had Psychic on theirs though lol.
Way to take a bad situation and not just recover, but make something super funny and memorable.
Had a terrible day at work and BAM! Jrose comes clutch with some much needed enjoyment! Looking forward to this run!
The trainer and rival names are always so funny! Good vid.
When putting Exeggcute on the tier list you said that it was in the top 5 for levels, but I think you might have missed a sneaky little level 63 Abra down the bottom there ;)
Exeggcute is actually the 6th lowest so far. Personally I probably would have put it between Pikachu and Dratini; I think the extra 1.5-2 hours of extra time is worse than the 3 level difference for Bulba/Pika, but I can understand your reasoning for putting it above them.
Yeah. If he was going more on level then Abra would be top tier. It's funny how those 2 psychic types are so similar in level vs time
Daamn that strat at the end was incredible! What a great run JRose. Always love your videos.
I'm Team Badge Boost Glitch (or BBG for short).
Never heard of it till your channel and it definitely changes the complexion of the game, but the way you use it makes the runs way more interesting because it's like an ace in your sleeve.
BBG is a unique acronym.

just a heads up, the 2-5 hits thing isn't "totally random", it's actually worse. there is a 37.5% chance of 2 hits, 37.5% 3 hits, 12.5% 4 hits, 12.5% 5 hits. in later games, this was changed to 35/35/15/15
Seems like when your opponent uses a multi-hit attack though the odds are in reverse lol
That's what "totally random" means.
@@ceulgai2817 how so? when you think random, you think the basic dice roll as in each result has the same chance of happening. when you actually set the chance of each result, you're rigging the randomness. of course, in the game's case, it's not like it rolls a rigged 4-sided dice, but rather it rolls a 8-sided dice, and sets 1-3: 2 hit, 4-6: 3 hits, 7: 4 hits, 8: 5 hits. anyway the effect is the same. when you hear someone say it's "totally random" and they don't mention the odds of each result, you think they're the same. and this is exactly what the game makes you think because it just says the move hits 2-5 times.
Man, seeing these in my alerts is a higlight of my day! When I got this one, it was just about time for me to go to bed, but I got super excited anyway and told my buddy "Awh man, that's gonna be my tomorrow morning for sure!". Thanks for doing these man, I'm always stoked for a new run by you!
What an eggciting find at the end of my day. Im eggspecting this to going middle road, and listening to the stats eggsplanation is changing my mind. Lets see how Jrose eggsplore with this one!
I love runs like this and the Pidgey and Abra runs where the Rival is so impressed with your Pokémon that he gets one for himself.
You should do Growlithe and Rhyhorn soon to finish up the "rival Pokémon base form solo run" series.
I wasn’t expecting the Jrose acapella but I’m all here for it
Badge boost seems perfectly in spirit of this challenge series.
Thanks and keep up the good work
The vocal recreation of the battle music had me ☠️ if I wasn't subbed before, that would have instantly won me over. Instead, I had to stop what I was doing to slap a like and drop a comment. Don't usually bother with either till the end lol. Keep up the top tier content!
This is one of the most pleasantly interesting channels I’ve found in months. This is so soothing as background activity during mind-numbing stretches of my work day. Thanks, dude.
I love Jrose
I love nothing more than seeing a hour + video from Jrose, you just know it's going to be a banger
I’ve been watching your videos for a good while since I found your channel and the this background music is me favorite so far. Thank you for your videos and keep up the good work 😄
I love how it's just you doing the music in the background during that battle- that's great
That issue at the beginning of Brock is actually super interesting; leveling usually gives you the edge no matter what in some way, but not in this fight whatsoever seemingly, until you factor in the second strategy at level 15.
Great run and didn't go to scramble as I thought it would ;)
Can't wait for the scyther vs pinser rivalry to be settled 👌
Let's go team scyther 👌
Keep up the great work ,)
Scyther gets Swords Dance, Agility and Double Team so that's 3 moves for badge boosts so I think it may win.
@@iss2075 pinsir has access to those as well minus agility. They actually have nearly the same movepool and stats aside from scyther having higher speed and hp at the cost of lower attack and defense. Really its going to come down to how fast either one can take down brock.
Really digging the regular uploads again my man.
I don't watch Pokémon videos, or subscribe to many people at all, but when I see an upload from you it's always a treat.
The showdown part is my favorite thing ever
Absolutely love the vocal representation of the music for the self destructing hiker bit jrose, you never fail to bring a smile to my face.
Technically, all of Exeggcutes moves are Egg moves...
Eggactly
With Exeggcutes level, you had the perfect opportunity to go into the Final champion battle and say:
"Exeggcute Order 66"
been watching jrose for a long time. top 3 pokemon youtubers, if not the top. humble, smart, funny, consistent. bro, dont change what you are doing with the channel. your videos are gold. keep at it man. excellent work. and the lost footage section here? omg
What a eggcellent choice for a video!
Can he eggxecute with exeggcute?
Or will this run fall harder then Humpty off that wall?
Only one way to find out!
One of my favorite parts in these videos is when he makes it to the E4 and there’s still half the video left😂
17:55- Oh Jrose, you the best! Your ever eager approach to these challenges in the face of real life infuriating difficulties is nothing short of inspiring! Thank you for your effort and entertainment! Rock on!!!
This was a very interesting watch! I’ve recently gained a higher appreciation for Exeggcute, so it’s fun that it had such a weird difficulty curve!
Interesting run. The many different strategies were very entertaining.
I do have to say though, that I disagree about the placement of Exeggcute on the tier list. Exeggcute needed so much luck until it got psychic. It's very inconsistent. Those luck based strategies in the early and middle game also take a lot of real time. This makes Exeggcute a for worse mon in my opinion, than all the other mons in it's tier. I would place it at the bottom of the Ponyta/ Charmander/ Ekans tier.
I think maybe Brock's full heals are to counter poison from the many poison sting users you can get before him.
Though I don't know why Game Freak decided that Brock needed to be such a brick wall as the first gym.
GF couldn't anticipate that people would do these sorts of solo challenge runs that would make Brock such an issue, while each of the starters can breeze by him (Charmander less so but it only takes a bit of levelling for Charmander to win solo spamming Ember, and even less levelling if you take advantage of other pokemon for their debuff moves and as Bide fodder).
I’m 99% sure it’s meant to force the player into learning the super effective mechanics. Remember it was made for kids
Coffee and an hour long journey with one of my favorite Pokemon. What a great Saturday morning.
Great video!
LOL, loved you singing the RGBY battle theme, XD.
Also, Exeggcute had good defense. It's it's best stat actually!
