New cancer prevention protocols are being rolled out at South Metro Fire Rescue during February and March of 2018 to help reduce the exposure to cancer causing materials that Firefighters come into contact with on a regular basis.

In my 27 year career, I unfortunately buried 5 brothers that died from cancer that was directly related to the work as a fire fighter. I know of 20 fellow brothers/sisters that were diagnosed with thyroid cancer that was also directly related, all of them were caught early and so far everyone been lucky to go into remission from that form of cancer. Both my partner on rescue and myself were exposed to some kind of virus, which they don’t know what exactly, but it caused both of us to get cardiomyopathy, digestive issues and blood clots. We were both retired out on the heart and lung this year. Its difficult because now in-line duty deaths are no longer just from active working fires, but also from the exposures from the fires we respond to today because of all the chemicals found in the smoke that 30 years ago didn’t really have to deal with; each fire nowadays no matter how simple they may seem, can end up being some form of hazardous material because what type of chemicals that are now found in the smoke. Be careful out there, and wear your SCBA, even during overhaul, because that is where you will find the highest levels of the toxins in the air from the byproduct of what was in the fire..

Sorry to hear about your prognosis Chief. I hope you get to make as many memories with your family in the time that you have left. If it were up to me FF's that receive a cancer diagnosis would be placed in retirement with 100% of their pay and benefits paid for until their death. That would also include paying for all aspects of treatment of that cancer. I have just stumbled onto these videos and I have to say I am impressed. Keep up the good work.

We have to start using less carcinogens in our homes! Cut the problem off at the start. Go back to solid wood furniture and building supplies, get rid of plastics and adhesives in everything.

And yet there are firefighters who object to clean cabs and other cancer fighting initiatives because of the timing and other excuses.
It's bad enough we lose people it's even worse when it's preventable.

I love the video and Keep up the good work and the spirit South Metro. I Love that you have this topic because the cancer affect every firefighter in the whole country and the whole world. And the approach South Metro have now taken against cancer in fireservice is for me inspiering becuse that will save firefighters livs and make a diffrent how we can protects our self in the fireservice. Treating contaminated PPE after a fire like HazMat ville save firemens lives. Even in the firestation should contaminated PPE be treated as HazMat. And there should be cleaning stations and rooms for taking care of alla the contaminated PPE in the firestation.I know some firedepartmens around the world has taken this seriously and adapted their facilities so they can clean alla the contaminated PPE in special rooms with separate ventilation system. / William Sandberg
