Suicidal Tendencies - "Institutionalized" Frontier Records - Official Music Video
Artist city, country: Venice, California, U.S.A.
Artist Biography: Suicidal Tendencies is an American crossover thrash band founded in 1981 in Los Angeles, California by Mike Muir, its leader and only permanent member. The band is often credited as one of "the fathers of crossover thrash".
Suicidal Tendencies rose to fame with their 1983 self-titled debut album, which spawned the single "Institutionalized". That single was one of the first hardcore punk videos to receive substantial airplay on the music video outlets of that day and age.

Rocky was such an underrated guitarist. This song is basically him ripping a solo throughout the whole thing while Mike talks about his problems. Love Suicidal.
Cyco for Life!
And it is so fun to play! There's little licks and riffs throughout the song that are just *chefs kiss*
Unfortunately Rocky didn’t play on this album as he didn’t join until ‘84. Grant Estes played guitar on the first record. Easy mistake to make though, I thought the same for years.
@@fergusmaher7490 No $hit? Damn. Sounds like him, with that funky, groovy style, I never even heard of this other dude. Thanks for the info, man.

I was a metalhead, but went to a small school so I was friends with the punk rockers, never really cared for punk, but this song is always good and classic!
This is the beginning of cross over. Thrash and hardcore are like peanut butter and jelly. So are crust punk and black metal
ST bridged the gap, band was/is excellent, Metallica did not come out for another couple of years but many had similar ideas. Now an ex ST's bassist Robert T. plays with Metallica, which is sort of ironic? Drummer taught me some ST's bass lines in our High Jazz band 40 some years ago. Still can play them.

I had nu metal for my teenage anger I felt back in the late 90s-early 2000s, but man oh MAN did this song encapsul how it was for me and my parents back then! From the church thing, wanting to seek therapy but being denied it, parents breaking my metal CDs because they thought it was "satanic" and making me "evil and depressed", etc.
Hard music is therapeutic, it kept me from hurting myself and others. Even if it was "Satanic music", we still have the free will to decide if it will influence us detrimentally.
@@aofmual I’m aware of that lol. I’m just saying that Nu Metal also was an outlet for angry, young teens such as myself back in the prime of it who weren’t born around the time this song came out and bands like this in a way inspired bands after them to carry on the same message in a way to a new generation of teens back then.

JUST SOME SUICIDAL TENDENCIES
All I wanted was a Pepsi. Okay not really, I'm a Dr. Pepper drinker.
This is the only song that shows what it's really like for a young person being misunderstood and attacked at all angles. He starts out just wanting time alone and then you literally hear the music fall apart and swirl up into a full mental breakdown. It's funny because my Mom also came into my room while i was staring at the ceiling and yelled at me for being on drugs when I was just tired from school.
First comment about it that I've seen. It's kind of unfortunate how most people's takeaway is "haha funney, he said a brand name". Now, I admit, the Pepsi bit is pretty (inevitably) humorous; but from a serious viewpoint, this is a great criticism of a universal experience, as well as ableism/sanism, being misunderstood, belittled, pathologized, and/or possibly abused.

I never cared much for Suicidal Tendencies but this one song is a classic and the video is great, with Mary Woronov (Chelsea Girls, Death Race 2000, Silent Night Bloody Night, Rock n Roll High School and many, many others) and Jack Nance (Eraserhead) cast as the parents. This is certainly not their greatest acting roles but they add a lot of fun and class to the video.

Like there's this one meme that's literally just a cute Giorno Giovanna doll with the impact font text: i can't take it anymore | i'm srsly at my fucking limit. And there's another meme that's doge without a face morphed in a ball with the lyrics of One by Metallica. I don't know how the fuck we got here but who cares we're all gonna die in 20 years anyway.
We used to request this song working the overnight shift. WKDU Drexel University Zed & Hairball show!! It was AWESOME!!! 67 yrs old!! 🎼🎼🎼
One of my favorites
I mean, Mikey literally just looked at the fridge before going to his room, so he could’ve really just got his Pepsi himself lol
Jeremy Hicks his parents Pepsis possibly kids don’t touch parents stuff from the fridge in that era
Maybe they didn't have Pepsi on that particular day
but his mom wasn't allowing him to have it.
He was probably high.
Yeah! There were like three in the fridge!
"All i want is a pepsi and she wouldn't give it to me" I felt that😭😭
just one Pepsi
And she wouldn't give it to me, just a Pepsi
1:27 🤣
The soundtrack to my Tuesday… August 15th, 2023…
This is another example of a song of a genre and style that I wouldn't normally like, but it's just done so damn well that I can't help but love it. And it's so musically complicated and sophisticated... it's genuine class.
And I go, "Wait! What are you talking about?
We decided?! My best interest?!
How do You know what My best interest is?
How can You say what My best interest is?
What are you trying to say, I'm crazy?!
When I went to Your schools
I went to Your churches
I went to Your institutional learning facilities!
So how can you say I'm crazy?!
Best lines in a song ever!
Used it my mother a few times. She didn't get it.
I related so hard to this line lol

*Boy this takes me back! And the tape, never knew there was a music video.*
This was one of the earliest music videos back when mtv only showed music videos.
Released forty years ago today, on July 5th, 1983. Still as relevant in 2023 as it was then.
First time I heard this song I was driving in my car late at night and had to pull into a 7/11 parking lot because I was laughing so hard I couldn't drive!!!
What was so funny?
@@Gottacacheemalll PEPSI!!!!!!

@@imthedorf1964 JUST ONE PEPSI!

Tom Araya yelling 'hey Mike' and pushing him is the best part of he video.

Suicidal Tendencies front man, Mike Muir, is the younger brother of one of the original Z-Boys, Jim Muir. If little bro needs skate boarders, he has the hook up.
Grew up listening to Suicidal. Ironically when my daughter was a teen going through her stuff, this song helped us to connect a few times. Music was one of the only ways I had to reach her, to tell her that I been there and will be there through it all. Even when I dont understand.
Did you get her a Pepsi though?
Beautiful. I love punk rock. I just shared the song, Your Emotions by Dead Kennedys with my 7 year old today and we talked about what it meant. The newer generations get it.
Criminally underrated comment. Good on you, Mom.
Life.. pain... what does it all mean ??....
Thanks for admitting you can't always understand
Got a helpline link from youtube when searching for this video. No joke. LOL!
40 Freakin Years!!! Absolute Masterpiece
