- In 1945, a man named O'Day Short and his family moved into the racially segregated city of Fontana, CA. O'Day, his wife Helen, and their two children experienced the most terrifying kind of blind hatred from their neighbors during the months they lived in Fontana. Ultimately, the Short family's story ended in the most tragic way imaginable.
Out of the Past: Rare Historical True Crime Cases
Thank you for bringing this story to the light. When you said "He thought his family should be able to live anywhere" I said YES!!! So sad we are still fighting against the same racism and injustice today.
Amazing all the research you do, not just googling like most people. Going to the library looking through microfilms, wow, nice work. It seems it would be very intriguing discovering these original hidden and forgotten stories that way. Looking forward to viewing more of your work.
This is heartbreaking, you always have stories I have never heard of, but this was an important one great job !
Thanks so much, Sara! I appreciate your comments a great deal. :)

Thank for covering this story. I live in this city and did not know about it. This was tragic. Excellent job on bringing this to light.

Oil lamp Exploded, pffftttt
Thank you for the service you perform in bringing these stories to light! God bless you!
I live in Fontana CA. Today the city is very multicultural with a large Hispanic community. it's said though most people that live here don't know the story of the O'Day Short Family Also despite the civil rights act of the 60s Fontana was still felt the impact of segregation and it want until the the late 80's that North of baseline wasn't consider minority side of town. Also just some more information Fontana is also where the Hells Angels Biker gang started and the sight where the O'Day Short family house stood is now Randall Pepper Elementary School.
Thank you so much for your painstaking research on this incredibly sad, infuriating story.
I’ve lived in Fontana for about +24 years and never knew about this.
Your channel is a hidden gem and you do incredible work bringing these cases to light. I don't know if you're still uploading but I would love to contribute a donation to your account.
TY
Sad that you don't post regular content or acknowledge viewers, yet ask for likes and subscribers. You had a good channel.
This reminds me of the WOLF FAMILY MASSACRE back in 1920, when 8 people were killed by a hatchet. The only survivor was 8 month old baby girl left crying and hungry for two days in her crib.
Candice Owens be like “there’s never been racism towards black people stop victimisation “
I will never understand why some people think they are better than someone else because of their colour. Colour doesn't make you a good person, it comes from within. This poor family deserved so much better.
This is the best resource I have found about the short family. Today an elementary school stands over the remains of their house and goes by the name of Randall Pepper Elementary. Before they are forgotten in history, we must act now! www.change.org/p/city-of-fontana-ca-o-day-short-family-commemoration?signed=true This is a petition to the Mayor of Fontana for some sort of recognition of the Short family’s existence. Preferably renaming the school to honor their bravery to stand their ground from a time when their city and country rejected them. Coming from Fontana, barley anyone knows about this tragic story and it’s time that they receive justice. We will not forget them!
I signed the petition! I will also share it with friends. Thank you so much for your comment!
I had never heard about this. Horrible.
That guy looked like he was grilling bologna.
Totally! He might have been, I don't know. People did eat lot of weird crap mid-century.
Passing doesn’t always work
💔💔🙏🙏🙏
The Short family in West Virginia should be covered 💙🕊️
THIS IS SO SCREWED UP 😢😢😢
That was excellent - especially the opening. I've always wondered about the fact that all these old crimes videos are about White people. It's almost as though Black people must have been living peacefully through these times, which I know was so fricking far from the truth.
Racism at its best! However as an Black Women’s Historian they were considered news worthy to Black newspapers. You would need to look there the information is there. But white researchers need to do more work. Do the extra work Sis us Black researchers have no choice as you do.
