- A doctor plans to euthanize a terminally-ill patient.
A HANDFUL OF DUST is used with permission from Grayson Whitehurst. Learn more at graysonwhitehurst.com.
Dr. Goodman helps terminally-ill patients pass on without pain, with the help of a special one-of-a-kind device. But one day he is summoned by Lilith, a mother whose daughter is ill. He enters the strange house and meets daughter Alice, who is confined to bed.
But the doctor soon discovers that he has been sent to play a part of a larger, more elaborate cult ritual to bring rain to a drought-ridden commune -- and finds himself tested morally and in other ways as never before.
Writer-director Grayson Whitehurst's short conceivable falls into a recent wave of highly stylized, atmospheric horror films about the occult. Shades of films like THE WICKER MAN and even THE WITCH clearly share some creative DNA with the storytelling, but Whitehurst's film is distinguished not just by its sweeping and elegant visual style and its excellent performances, but by its philosophical engagement on the ethics of mercy killings, and the myth of control and understanding over something as inexorable as death.
The narrative doesn't rely on shock or surprise to generate its interest, as it begins with a striking opening sequence of the cult itself, complete with unsettling, restless black-and-white images and an eerie and effective score.
Instead, as the well-meaning doctor enters the milieu, the puzzle becomes about how the doctor learns about the larger context of his work and how it transforms his own understanding of his mercy killing.
Actor Atticus Cain as Dr. Goodman essays the role as a man who believes that his work is meaningful and services a valuable need. But as his fiery, righteous foil, actress Eileen Weisinger turns the table against him in a powerful performance, playing upon his sense of conviction and his own need to feel comfortable with what he is doing.
When the doctor discovers how easily he is manipulated by forces beyond control, he realizes the line between being a murderer and an "angel of death" is blurred -- and he's completely unable to prevent the tragedy that happens.
Riveting and beautifully crafted, A HANDFUL OF DUST is spookily engaging from beginning to end, but what makes it memorable is its remote undertow of melancholy. As the film moves towards its conclusion, it becomes increasingly dark and shadowy, with faces and figures held at a distance in the shadows.
The final end feeling isn't shock at what we've seen, or even relief that we've escaped peril. Instead, there is a pensive, almost numbing sadness and helplessness at how death is always senseless to those left behind, no matter how we try to control it. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
Someone in his line of work would definitely have run his own tests to confirm the patients illness before euthanizing them.
Hes an abortion doctor, they kill healthy fetuses along w unhealthy ones..this is a story to make u think..
@@purdygirlxo 😯 where did you get that he was an abortion doctor..he somehow uses potassium chloride JUST to kill a fetus and not the woman with that device? Kano the soundtrack was excellent too. sorry i didn’t mention it lol i thought i got the point across with everything else. but now that you mention it, the soundtrack is definitely one of the strongest parts of the short.
This was about the abortion debate...what is the doctors role, the mothers, the community, and ultimately the baby who wants to live but has no choice..
purdy girl Sure, that’s one way of analyzing it if you’d like to go metaphorical. Except that Death With Dignity is a huge thing as well, and the person in this story was a young adult, not a clump of cells. And before DWD or abortions were (reasonably) safe, medically supervised practices, doctors have been euthanizing terminally ill patients that can’t do anything except feel pain.
@@grayskindablue she is on a few of the comments trying to fist that one particular interpretation into every commenter's brain.
When I saw her walking in the field to the sacrificed goat, where she stood in it's place, I knew there was going to be twist in the story. She was supposed to be in agonizing pain at the slightest movement she made, yet she was walking.
I thought they were going to hang her in place of the goat. I was thinking since the goat sacrifice didn't work, they were about to try a human sacrifice.
Mother's name is a biblical one, rarely spoken about because "Lilith" was Adam's first wife..Lilith wouldn't submit to Adam, couldn't or would not give him children. She hated children. When she was cast out of Eden, her mission was to kill every child she set her mind to. Lilith~The killer of children. In this story, the daughter was not sick or dying. Lilith's motive was to sacrifice her child for drought relief. Lilith, true to her name, lied to Dr. *Goodman* to facilitate her daughters death..thus receiving a downpour..I interpret the 'rainfall' as God's tears. Lilith' for all intents and purposes--had defeated God, yet again.

It symbolizes the reasons women have abortions..
@@purdygirlxo How so?
@@privatemale27 my take is this, the guy who made the machine is an abortionist, the young girl the sick fetus, the mom who is willing to kill her ferus who isnt sick for rain that she will get lilacs from ..so stay w me, the mom is a pregnant woman wanting to terminate her pregnancy, the doctor uses the killing of a sick fetus as his reasoning for performing abortions, when the girl says I dont want to die, that's symbolism(all of this is) for a voice for the fetus, because who knows how a fetus feels when aborted, what if they could talk? He ignores her cries and continues w the procedure, he leaves the room so he doesnt have to watch, after an abortion the doctor leaves and the nurse cleans up, so out of sight out of mind..she hands him the drawing and at bottom it says dispose of immediately..I just put that together w a fetus being disposed of..well when he realizes the girl isnt 'sick' that shouldn't have made a difference, he was going to kill her , who is he to say when it's right to take a life, sick or not...listen to the moms speech again, w her describing an abortion doctor..he doesnt try very hard to break door down...then as he looks as the girl and cleans up he has to face what he has done..the payment was a goats head, which is some religious symbol..the cult members were abortion supporters that say abortion is ok for any reason..symbolism from rain to lilacs...a drought is a big thing to need, but we find out the mom just wants lilacs..which is so trivial..anyway, he is applauded in the end , but he knows what he did, but because of the rain, it made it all better....the goat head could also symbolize the fetus that looking at him.if u notice the goat head had eyeballs......my sis just had a miscarriage at 7weeks and said there were little eyeballs in it...
@@purdygirlxo that makes alot of sense!good interpretation

An abortion doctor...and there are people who think they are doing good and praise them..but, in the end they are killing healthy fetuses to make life 'easier' more 'prosperous' for the mothers..
@@purdygirlxo You sound like a broken record miss. 3 times I open the answers, 3 times I see a comment with your name talking about abortion.
Maybe you're right, maybe it's just a debate over life and death and how causing a death may be perceive has good or bad depending on the context, or maybe it's just a debate about euthanasia.
I think we get that you are not in favour of abortion, no need to tell it on every comment here. The thing with abortion is that a foetus is not a human being yet. Are you in favor of child suffering ? If one person will become a mom and she feels like she can't do it, she won't be a good mom, she will harm her baby or the baby will have a miserable life, of course she should abort, it's not about the foetus being healthy or not, it's not about making the mom's life easier or more prosperous.
Context is the key
A fetus is a human being though.
@@purdygirlxo I think the most pressing problem is the lack of attention to the living. Anti-abortionists scream and holler about the unborn but are strangely silent when it comes to the needs of children once they are in the land of the living. Let's talk about the inequities in educational funding, let's have a discussion about SNAP benefits to poor families, why don't we dig up the stats on Medicaid which provides healthcare to millions of children and what the ramifications of cutting those benefits would mean, and then there's of course the children separated from their families at the border and still warehoused in foster care or cages....I could go on and on. Next time you post please make sure to comment on one of these issues.
@@YT4Me57 i was commenting on what this movie was really about...if u look at it as a doctor who is killing innocent healthy babies because the mother thinks the death of her child will make her life better..the doctor thinks hes doing a good thing because the fetus doesn't feel anything or know..but, like in this movie, the girl doesn't want to die...he knows shes healthy, but kills her anyway w his expertise.. that was my point, not an antiabortion conversation ..

The Corporate Monsters(A dangerous unstable man), the Government Monsters(A young girl lives in a bunker), A British Soldier is trapped with a German enemy, etc. So many theories could spawn from these short movies... Extraterrestrials posing as Gods... Dark Gods existing whilst Aliens slowly incorporate themselves into human society until it's too late... And.... The Drought was gone..
Abortion performed, relief for mother and her family...that's the message...
Underrated video based on views. I'm back here after I think about two years.
Spoiler: the mother of a young woman values the lilacs she grows on communal land -- possibly needed for her witchcraft potions -- more than the life of her daughter.
The daughter, totally under the spell of her mother, willingly and gladly sacrifices herself to ensure the lilacs and other things grown at the commune may have the rain they need to prosper.
While afraid, the daughter is nevertheless brave, and fulfills her mother wishes.
The rain comes to the land as the daughter leaves the world.
The doctor who is tricked into facilitating the daughter's suicide only realizes his role when it is too late for him to stop it and he is left to grapple with what he has become.
It’s so dark I can’t even see anything

First, I'm late to this. Second, I just do not don't buy the abortion angle. If anything, it's about euthanasia. What it does have is a very strong "Wicker Man" vibe. There is a line in the '73 film in which the mother of the supposedly missing girl tells Officer Howie, "You'll simply never understand the true nature of sacrifice." And while her daughter was in no actual danger, I do believe her remark was genuine. I believe the people of the island absolutely would sacrifice anything for the "greater good"--in their case, the crops, in this film's case, rain. And not just for lilacs, though it's stated the mother likes them. It's also stated that they live on a commune and it's very likely they grow their food.
Side note: Anyone else remember reading "Young Goodman Brown" as an example of an allegory while in early high school? Probably not an obvious coincidence the doctor was named Goodman, considered himself to indeed be a good man, and then found his notion challenged.
Bravo! They were all very good actors but the woman who played the mother was incredible!
Ah, one of the best short horror films I've seen yet, and I've seen tons of them.
8:51 What is in the bag? A goat's head? It was too dark for me to see it.
It's the fetus of the baby(girl) he just aborted..its the same value as a goats head and it has eyeballs..
I can't tell if this is meant to be anti-euthenization or just a suspense story
Neither, it is more about superstition. The creepy thing here is, it actually seemed to work. :s

The mother reminds me of Alpha on the walking dead. Cruel and crazy! Fantastic acting by all! And beautifully shot.
The sacrificial lamb!! Applaud to the actress who played MISS Angler.
bruh this is so sad
Her calmness reminded me of Mr. Abel from "Bridge of Spies". The cautious yet intense structuring of words by the victim was something to note. She first subtly hinted that beautiful flowers like lilacs won't grow on dead man's corpses( growing of lilacs symbolizes birth and not death) , even then the doctor couldn't comprehend her metaphor, she became a bit more restless and said - " I can do anything for her " (hint : Death). Lastly her voice stuttered and the climax - "I am scared, I don't want to die." These strata that built up to reach the climax sequentially was well crafted.
I think this is more about the doctor's dodgy morality. Even when he has misgivings, it's not "oh my god, an innocent girl is being pressured to kill herself"....no, it's "oh my god, this makes ME a murderer, not a saviour". ME, ME, ME, ME. Note how he runs out of the house instead of going to stop it happening. Then at the end, he gets the adulation that he wanted.
Also, there is the suggestion that the ritual worked so...does that make it acceptable?
This
I haven’t even watched it and I already liked it

Wow this is incredible. Dark and brooding. Brutal and brilliant, bravo!
It's a horrifying cautionary tale, but for this drought-stricken commune, it's "All's well, that ends well."
The best part was the animation under the end credits.
Well done. I enjoyed the film as well as the performances of all the lead actors, in particular, Atticus Cain as the doctor.
Her accent was a little over the top (I feel I can quantify that as a born & bred Southerner). But the visuals were beautiful in this film...lighting, directing, unusual angles...It all added up to a well-done, superb little film.

There are satanic cults and horrific things that are done primarily to children. You have no idea how deep it goes.
Should I blame the Dr? No; it's sad that people we trust and love most are the ones can destroy us most. It can be your parents, siblings, husband or wife, children. And there's nothing to prevent if it's not God's power or protection.
