Eddie Vedder Shooting Original SNL Promos For Pearl Jam April 1994 Show

- I got this VHS tape from a used records store that I used to live by, I've had it since probably at least 1995. Sorry about the quality, like I said it was on videotape, I've finally gotten around to transferring it. The tape had these, and all the raw footage from the three songs the band rehearsed earlier that week. I've seen multiple people already have those 3 songs up here on YT (Daughter, Rearview Mirror and Not For You) but I've never seen the shooting of these commercial promos before, so I thought why not. Maybe there's even some hardcore PJ fans who've still never seen these. It's funny to watch how obviously nervous that Adam Sandler is in these, he was a huge PJ fan (probably still is).
FUN FACT: at the time this aired (April 1994), only one other musical artist in the history of Saturday Night Live was allowed to play 3 songs in one episode (the usual is 2), Aretha Franklin back in the late 70's. Pearl Jam became the second. But I haven't regularly watched SNL in a long time, another band might've done it again by now for all I know.
Also, this was recorded only days after the news hit that Nirvana's Kurt Cobain committed suicide. The "K" drawn in a circle on Eddie's tshirt is a reference to Cobain. He reveals it briefly during one of the song performances that Saturday night, and more obviously shows it (& looks sadly up to the rafters) during the cast goodbyes at the end of the show.

I met Sandler about 5 or 6 years ago. We had a brief conversation for about 5 minutes and talked about Pearl Jam. We both love them.
I love how Eddie’s all amused. He’s usually comes off intense, but here he’s adorable and I can’t help but smile the whole time. I love all these guys. I wish I can go back 😔

Yes he's the kind of guy who doesn't try hard for his appearance. He is a genuine fellow, not working for the stage, not being a showman. Truthfully this look is rather sloppy than creepy but you could argue both are accurate.

Eddie is so chill.
I met Sandler about two summers ago and he was really cool. He was with his family and he stopped and chatted with me for a good 10 minutes. Half of that time we were talking about '90s SNL and the other half we were talking about how much we both are big Pearl Jam fans. He basically said Eddie is the greatest guy ever.
The second Eddie/Emilio spot is the best. Ed's slight hesitation, inflection and expression on "no" are magic. The indifferent rock star played perfectly.
Emilio being so quiet and still while adam and eddie are having a conversation had me laughing annoyingly loud 😂

I love how most of the comments overthink this whole process & seem to know what each other is feeling. These promos are barely outlined & at times improvised, and usually taped for broadcast right at the wire after final dress rehearsal. 3 to 4 takes for a 10 spot is pretty damn good actually.. thanks for posting this little gem!

A lot goes into filimg. Just like movies are a lot longer than the 2 hrs you see. So much footage and takes are done, but most of it gets cut.

Josh that was what I initially thought way back when upon first seeing the video, but actually during that stretch, Ed is simply paying attention to Lorne Michaels. Michaels is standing there, mostly out of the frame on the left side, talking to them as well as others who were milling around, and Ed is just looking at him the whole time, so it kind of looks like he's awkwardly staring at Emilio lol

Did no one notice how brilliantly Emilio took direction and with just a subtle change made a huge difference. Total pro.
Of the 3, he seems like the only experienced professional the way he waits patiently yet confidently. Sandlers clearly nervous and Vedder looks lost.
